The Price of Success
The letter
Chapter 1: The Letter
Yugi greeted the morning with a yawn. The rays of the sun had just found their way to his bed and woke him so gently. Slowly he straightened up and looked at the glowing pendant that he held firmly in his hands. His gaze wandered to his bedside table, where his alarm clock now indicated that it was 6:03 in the morning.
When Yugi suddenly noticed that something was missing, he jumped up. His eyes widened in shock and he ran to his desk. He rummaged through the drawers, turned everything over and searched the whole room.
No, this could not be. He would never have left it carelessly anywhere. Someone must have stolen it. The god cards.
KNOCK. KNOCK.
Joey turned to one side and went back to sleep, snoring.
"No, not yet ... I want to go back to sleep ..."
"Joey, please wake up!" shouted a shrill girl's voice and kept knocking madly on the door.
"Hey, open the door, dude!Otherwise I will enter them! "
"Leave me alone ... it's the weekend ..." Joey mumbled into his pillow and pulled the covers over his head.
"All right, that's enough! Everyone get away from the door!"
With a loud bang, the door of Joey's apartment flew off its hinges and landed with a clatter on the floor. With angry faces, Tea and Tristan stormed the hallway and trudged towards Joey's bedroom.
"Hey, I said wake up!" she called and pulled the covers off Joey.
“What's that, it's Sunday!” Joey pulled back his covers so that Tea stumbled and almost fell. Nevertheless he remained seated on the edge of the bed.
"And? What is it that you have to wake me up so early in the morning?" He looked from one to the other skeptically.
"Didn't you even notice Yugi's call? You have a good night's sleep, dude," said Tristan and eyed Joey, who now looked even more confused.
"No, why should Yugi call me so early. He knows that I was still sleeping around primeval times. What time is it?"
"At seven. Normally he wouldn't have called that early, but it's important. The ..." replied Tea, but was interrupted.
"What, so early! I don't even get up when we have school!" Joey fell back and closed his eyes.
"Hey, didn't you listen to me ?! Something bad happened! Yugi's god cards have been stolen!" Tea was about to grab Joey by the collar when he jumped up in a flash. She missed him and luckily fell softly on the bed.
"WHAT ?! Who was it ?!"
"I don't know" Tristan just shrugged his shoulders. "Yugi is looking through the game shop again to see if he has just moved it."
"He definitely didn't. You are far too important. Who gave him the idea ..." Tea glared at Tristan, who innocently shook his head.
“Have you checked the kitchen yet, Yugi ?!” Tristan was kneeling next to the couch while Tea watched him with a mixture of anger and skepticism."Yes, I have! But you could have a look in the bathroom!" Yugi called back from the stairs
"Listen, Yugi!" Tea called to him while she continued to watch Tristan. "I don't think that's going to help! Let's try to find the thief and see who it could be!"
"Yes," said Yugi. "You're probably right. I'll just look in my room one more time!"
"Is good!"
"Hey guys! Look who I met on the way here!" A grin appeared in the doorway.
"Oh, hello Joey. Did you finally find your way here? Good morning, Bakura!" she smiled at the white-haired man.
"Morning, Tea! Hey, Tristan! How are you down there? Joey told me what happened. Do you know anything new?"
Tea just shook her head sadly. "No, but Yugi is going crazy about it. I'm worried about him."
"Oh, don't worry. That will be cleared up again. Tell me, does Yugi have ... Oh, hello Yugi!" Bakura looked at the little friend and the looks of the others followed his."Hey Bakura! Hello Joey! Nice that you all came." Yugi smiled for a few seconds, then looked down.
"What's the matter, Yugi?"
"When I was just looking through my room again, I noticed that something was still missing - the millennium staff."
"If Marik is really behind this, sooner or later he will challenge you anyway, Yugi" Bakura shook his head thoughtfully, as if weighing the possibilities.
“Why?” Joey looked around, confused.
"Because he wants the millennium puzzle, you idiot! And for that he has to defeat Yugi in a duel. That's true, isn't it?" Tea looked questioningly at Yugi, who was now sitting next to her with his head bowed.
"Yes, but I don't think Marik has anything to do with it. His evil side disappeared at the end of Battle City."
"I'm not so sure about that. I still don't trust this Marik."
"I agree with Joey on this point. Everything could be expected of that," Tristan interfered in the conversation."Yes, but ..." Yugi looked from one face to the other in disbelief.
"Well, you could trust him, but after he left Battle City so peacefully. I mean, he gave you Ra and the Millennium Staff voluntarily. Why should he suddenly want it back now?" put in Bakura.
Tea frowned. "Well, maybe a part of his evil self has really stayed behind and has regained its strength in Egypt."
"It will probably be best first, I'll call Ishizu to sort it out," Yugi rose from the sofa and reached for the phone.
"Wait a minute, Yugi! Maybe you don't even need to. You can soon ask her personally!" Bakura suddenly remembered. The eyes turned to him and Yugi took his hand off the phone again.
"How so?" asked he.
"Oh, when I searched my mail this morning, I found this one" He rummaged in his jacket pocket for a moment and then pulled out a bright red envelope.
"What's this?" Joey asked, reaching for the letter, but Bakura pulled it back."You must have one yourself. This is an invitation to a new tournament that takes place in a week's time. It says that all finalists from previous major tournaments, including Battle City, will be invited personally. And that includes Ishizu ... and of course also Marik. "
