The gods - some information
The gods:
Apep / Apophis: He is one of the main enemies of the gods. He is mostly depicted as a writhing snake. The translation of his name is also tellingly "giant snake". In mythology, Apep inhabits the underworld, which the sun god of the night crosses to regenerate. There he tries to overturn the sun barge of Re, which symbolizes the cosmic equilibrium.
There are different traditions about his birth: Some say that the goddess Neith "spat it out" (that is, it emerged from her saliva), others say that it was from the beginning of time, nothing (Egyptian personified by Nun, the primeval ocean ) existed.
Since Neith is also considered the mother of the sun god in some traditions, Apep is, so to speak, the brother of Re.
Re: The Greek name of the sun and creator god of Heliopolis (Egyptian: Iunu / Junit) is Ra. The name Re is correct because it is an ancient Egyptian word for sun.He is usually depicted as a man with the head of a hawk crowned with a disk of the sun, which is sometimes wrapped by a serpent. Re symbolizes the midday sun.
Re is the main god in Egyptian mythology. Among other things, he enters into various connections with other gods, such as Sobek (Sobek-Re) or Amun (Amun-Re), who thus take over his attributes as a sun and creator deity.
In the creation myth of Heliopolis he appears under the name Re-Atum-Khephri (or Re-Atum-Chephre).
According to mythology, he created the air, moisture and humanity.
Chronos (Kronos): A god of the Greek pantheon. In Greek mythology he is the son of Uranus and the Gaea and thus belongs to the giant race of the titans. At the beginning he ruled over Olympus, but he killed his children except for Zeus, who later overthrew him in order to avoid a seizure of power by them. He was deceived by his wife Rhea, which saved Zeus' life.Atum / Atemu: A human-shaped sun and creator god of Heliopolis, sometimes also depicted with the head of a ram to underline his function as creator and protector. It symbolizes the evening sun. In the beginning it is said to have existed as a spirit that set itself in a stone in order to materialize. Only in this way was creation possible for him. He was the first of the gods on earth and became the father of the mighty unity of the gods of Heliopolis, whose city god he was before Re.
Amun / Ammon: The name of this god is translated as "the hidden one". He received the title of "the king of gods" after being merged with Re and taking over his attributes. So he received his own creation myth, according to which he should belong to the eight original gods of Thebes. Amun is depicted as a man with a head covering in the form of a high crown of feathers.
In the early days of Thebes doctrine, Amun played a rather minor role as the god of the air; however, since the Middle Kingdom he was seen as a dynastic deity, that is, from this time on he became the god of the empire. In Thebes he was worshiped under the name Amun-Re.
Schu: His name means "the breath", which reflects his function as the god of air. He comes from the creation myth of Heliopolis and was a son of Re and the husband of the lion-headed Tefnut ("the heat").
He is depicted as a crouching man (mostly between the deities Geb and Nut) with a feather on his head. At Res's behest, he pushed himself between the gods Geb and Nut and thus separated heaven and earth from each other.
Geb: Geb is an earth deity, lover of Nut and father of the god Osiris. According to sources, he is said to have ruled as Pharaoh before the time of Osiris.
He is often portrayed as a naked, recumbent man; but there are also paintings in which he is seated on a throne.
Together with Atum, Schu, Tefnut, Nut, Osiris, Isis, Seth and Nephthys, it forms the Ennead of Heliopolis.
Nut: Nut is the goddess of the sky and consort of the sun god Re, with whom she has the sons Haroeris and Seth. With her lover, Geb, she has another son, Osiris. Legend has it that she was wrongly married and Re punished her by not being allowed to bear her children on any day of his year. The god Toth then challenged the moon goddess to a game and won five additional days, the so-called epagomene, on which Nut could give birth to her children.
She is often depicted in the form of a bent woman whose body, strewn with stars, symbolizes the vault of heaven.
Together with Atum, Schu, Tefnut, Geb, Osiris, Isis, Seth and Nephthys, it forms the Ennead of Heliopolis.
Osiris / Wasire: Osiris is mainly the god of the afterlife and judge of the dead. He presides over the "Hall of Two Truths" and, with the help of 42 "lay judges", decides whether the deceased will be admitted into his realm, the Duat or Jaru realm, or whether he will be eaten by a beast, Ammut accuses.
However, Osiris also acts as the god of Nile flooding and vegetation.Osiris is said to have been the "first real" pharaoh of Egypt and in this role enjoyed the respect of all other deities. According to sources, he was murdered by his brother, the jealous Seth; However, there are also texts that report that he simply drowned ...
Another legend says that even the pious Osiris was not averse to intrigues. He is said to have conspired against his father Geb and so ousted him from the throne, who then took revenge and killed his son. However, Geb regretted this, gave Osiris his life back and in the end voluntarily gave him the throne out of shame.
As Isis' husband, he is the father of the Harsiesis child (Horus).
Osiris is often depicted as a seated, mummified man with the atef crown. He usually has a green or black face (green in his function as the god of vegetation; black as the color of death). In his hands he holds the ruler's emblems, crook and frond.Isis / Aset: She was the goddess of magic and beauty, connected to this she was also considered a fertility goddess and a goddess of love. But as beautiful as she was, she could be so scheming and deceitful. A legend tells of it. Re, who underlies all life and is thus "omnipotent", can take forms of which are so many, some of which are so secret that it is impossible to know them all, which arouses the envy of the goddess. She would be only too happy to acquire this power in order to become mistress of the world in turn. So she tries to find out the secret name of Re and watches him. She discovers how he has aged; he even starts drooling. She takes a sample of saliva from him, mixes it with earth and forms a snake out of it, which she places on a crossroads of the path of the sun chariot. This ultimately bites the sun god. The snake poison seems to be mastering him and he has to call the gods for help. After some "tare", Isis finally asks his real name and explains that a man can only recover if he is called by name.So this you call the name and Isis redeems Re from his suffering.
As the protector of the dead, she and her sister Nephthys are depicted on sarcophagi above or next to the symbol for gold. As such, together with Neith, Selket (Serquet) and Nephthys, she is one of the patrons of the sacred canopic jars.
Most of the time she crouches with her wings outspread, which reflects her role as a protector. However, she is also represented as a standing woman with (in connection with the goddess Hathor) cow horns and a sun disk in it. As a rule, however, she is depicted with a throne as a headdress or a vulture hood.
As the wife of Osiris, she is the mother of Horus (Heru).
Haroeris / Heru-wer / Heru´ur: His name means something like "Horus, the old" or "Horus, the great".
In contrast to others, very little is known about this god. He is one of the children of Re and Nut, but does not belong to the divine Ninth. In the mythology of the Egyptians he is fought by Seth and reborn as the posthumous son of Isis and Osiris and can take revenge on his murderer by snatching the conquered throne from him. The struggle for the Egyptian throne among the gods is told in the most famous of the Egyptian myths, the Osiris myth.
Other sources report that Haroeris was a hero and alone put down a conspiracy brewing near the town of Ombos. So he was personally awarded the title of "greatest of the gods" by the sun god.
Like most Egyptian deities, he is depicted as a falcon or as a man with the head of such an animal.
Seth / Setech / Suthek / Suti / Nubti - a god with many names ^^ °: With Seth we encounter one of the most versatile deities of all. In the beginning he was the god of desert and drought and was confronted with his brother, the god of vegetation, Osiris. Furthermore, he was worshiped as the god of metals and, associated with it, as the god of war and fire. The Egyptians admired him primarily for his strength - they said that Seth's bones were made of iron, but also for his intelligence; he was the bearer of "secret knowledge" because only he knew how to defeat Apep (the Egyptians used to say: "Thoth sprang from the head of Seth").
In the 15th and 16th dynasties (when the Hyksos took power in Egypt and founded their capital in Avaris, later the city of Seth), Seth was considered the god of foreign lands and increasingly became an "intruder" and "troublemaker "acted. At that time he was considered the patron god of the Hyksos.
At the time of the Ramessids he was even god of the house and court of these pharaohs (19th and 20th dynasties of the New Kingdom). To show their connection to Seth as well as to Horus, the pharaohs of that time put the Horus falcon and the Seth beast above their names; In addition, the cartouches were gilded - Seth was not directly worshiped as the god of gold or something similar, but his name was associated with gold, which was particularly illustrated by one of his main cult cakes: The city of gold Nubt.Seth was also one of the patron gods of Egypt. He was generally attributed to Upper Egypt in the south.
This god is mainly known through the Osiris legend, in which he mimes the "bad brother". He is said to have killed Osiris in order to
