Chapter 8: Demons and Their Hunters
His wounds healed incredibly quickly, and after half an hour or so, Chris even managed to get up. Must be because he was a demon. He had to admit that there were some advantages to this.
He struggled to sit up, wondering what to do next. Maybe he should go after Azrani? He really liked the name. His mother had always told him that if she had a daughter she would call her Azrani. He was very happy that he had given a name to Azrani. He was bothered by the constant: "Stay here, demon!" and “Oh no, the demon hunter!” Now they could finally call each other by name! Just ... what good would that do if she was killing him anyway? Nothing at all. But she looked kind of happy ...
He tried to move his wings again, but they were too badly injured by Azrani's attack. He wasn't even angry with her about it, after all, it was her job to kill demons and there was nothing he could do about that anyway. He didn't even want to. If she really wanted to fight him, he was prepared. He was interested in how strong his demonic powers were ...
Slowly he unwrapped the bandage around his right arm and was relieved to see that the bleeding had almost completely stopped. The cloth smelled strange, at least a little like ... lavender. Nice smell.
After a while he noticed that he could follow the lavender smell closely. Must also be one of his skills! It led in the direction ... his village was! What was Azrani doing there, the villagers would probably not be welcoming her. So why did she go back there? Chris went towards the village, following the scent. Maybe she was just about to explain to people that while he was a demon, he was a nice one! No, she wouldn't do that ...
For that she had been very mean to him, to put in a good word for him with the village people. She wanted to kill him too!But she had to do something ...
So Chris went there too. He took the shortcut through the forest, but his wings, which kept beating against the dense trees, made him extremely handicapped. Still, he went faster and faster ...
Azrani collapsed. Although the villagers were not trained fighters, they outnumbered her and their blades were sharp. Azrani's whole body was now covered with wounds and she couldn't get up anymore.
"You got that on yourself, friend of the demon! You will burn at the stake for that!" Someone shouted gleefully and immediately she was picked up by two people and taken to the market square, where all the public burnings took place. Her eyes kept falling and she decided in the end to keep them closed all the time. Nobody wants to watch them get burned, do they?
"Please look at me when I stand in front of you and talk to you!"She was yelled at and she lifted her head a little. In front of her stood a young man with a torch in his hand." Hehe, you will be finished soon! Tie them up! ", he continued and Azrani was pulled to her feet by two people. Her back was pushed against a stake and her hands were tied to it. She tried several times to tear herself away, but to no avail. There was nothing more to be done The shackles were too tight and only then did she notice that the villagers were fetching wood from all over the place and throwing it at her feet.
When everything was to his satisfaction, the man in front of her threw his torch on the wood. Everyone else burst out cheering.
Damn it. If only they'd left me my sword. Then this wouldn't be a problem, she thought, twisting her feet a little to avoid the flames. The heat became more and more unbearable.
She glanced at the floor on her left side and her sword lay about five meters away from her. So out of their reach. She couldn't have picked it up with her hands tied anyway.
"Burn, burn, burn!" Shouted the villagers in chorus. Lousy pack, she thought, glancing at her feet. The fire was getting closer and she just hoped it would be over soon.
"My sword ..." she whispered and took one last desperate look at her weapon. But it was no longer there! Does everything around you dissolve when you die? No, it didn't work at all ...
Now the villagers also cried out in concern.
"Wait, I only need a minute, then you're free," someone whispered in her ear and she looked up, startled. Right on the top of the stake, Chris crouched, folded his wings with relish and tried to loosen their bonds. "What are you doing here ?! Get out of here, that's my business!" She complained to him. Chris didn't listen to her at all and concentrated again on her bonds.
"There is this damn demon! Kill him!" One shouted just as Chris had untied the knot. The villagers were already running towards them. Azrani was about to flee alone when Chris put his arms around her and spread his wings.
"What are you doing there?", Azrani shouted angrily and Chris smiled: "I'll save your life, you'd better be grateful to me!"
He flapped his wings and together with him he rose into the air. In a few minutes he was out of sight of the villagers ...
