Chapter 2: It only wants to protect you
"Will you take the job, or do I have to find another slut?" Jonny asked coldly while he was lighting a cigarette. She just nodded as a sign that she agreed to the terms. It was an easy task in itself, a simple cash delivery that she and Jonny would do alone. She would get a whole ounce of heroin for her help, enough for four prints. You only got that much with Jonny if you had taken over two hundred dollars from his suitors. And that was rare, especially with all her self-inflicted scars, she had even worse cards than other of Jonny's "co-workers."
They would have to go out to the coast and meet some shady characters there, collect money from them, and then disappear. Of course they would give the men something in exchange for the money, but what had Jonny not told her. It was undoubtedly something illegal, Jonny wasn't working in an honest way.She knew a lot about Jonny and that also included the fact that when money was tight, he took hostages and exchanged them for ransom. That was still going well.
Without her noticing it, Jonny got up and sat up in front of her. Slowly he bent down to her and stubbed the newly lit cigarette on her forehead, in the middle of one of her worst wounds. She winced almost imperceptibly, but didn't fight back. "And just so that it is clear, you hear: If anything goes wrong, you will have to pay for it!" (Sorry, but you just have to censor the guy ... He leaned so close to her that she could smell the cigarette smoke he was breathing out. She nodded again and Jonny leaned back again. "Come on, the car is waiting," he said. He left the room and motioned for her to follow him. She did, too, and made pretty quick progress despite her injuries.She swayed very little and walked purposefully to the black car outside, the door of which was held open by Jonny. When she was only inches away, there was a violent gust of wind that threw her off balance. She fell over, there was nothing there to hold on to. She almost felt as if the wind wanted to carry her away, away from Jonny and the drugs, away from the job that had just been given to her. But Jonny didn't allow that.
Out of reflex he reached out his hand to her, clutched her wrist and threw her more or less brutally into the car. "Stop acting like a child, the thing is serious," he said, still as coldly as before, and gave her a disdainful look. She nodded for the third time within a few minutes. She wasn't a friend of many words, it could be fatal in her job.
Jonny got in on the driver's side and stepped on the gas, on the way to the coast of Prouts Neck (imagined, should the part really exist, that's a coincidence).That is where the handover of whatever should take place.
The wind gently caressed a few leaves on the side of the road, long after the black car was gone. He was like a mother watching her youngest child leave home. Worried that she might never see it again. And maybe she wasn't all that wrong.
