Chapter 3: Are you waiting over there?
"You see, there we are!", She explained to the boy and pointed to a large brick building, almost in the middle of the market square. “This is the town hall!” Even from a distance she saw an older man standing in front of it in a uniform similar to the one the boy wore. The little one got really bright eyes again and ran towards the town hall without another word. He didn't even say thank you, she thought, slightly disappointed. She watched the boy for a while as he ran towards the town hall, until her gaze inevitably turned to the building that was next to it: the police headquarters. That made her realize once again how terribly stupid she was.
She hadn't reported Cole, although she had all the reasons in the world to do so. Merry couldn't tell why she hadn't. Again, all kinds of emotions fought within her. When the policeman asked her who had done this to her children, she replied, slightly hesitant: "A burglar. It was a burglar. "She knew that no one believed her. Nothing had been stolen and there were no signs of burglary either. However, no one had asked her about her husband's whereabouts.
She toyed with the idea of going to police headquarters. Maybe they'd give her the psychologist's number again. Even if she didn't really believe that a psychologist could help her in her current situation. Merry stood in the street with no money in his pocket. All bank accounts she had were in Cole's name and so she had no access to them. She didn't know where to get something to eat.
But Merry didn't doubt that Cole would come back and find her either. He would keep coming back until he finished what he set out to do. She couldn't help shivering at the thought. Cole wouldn't just go away like that, no. It's never been that straightforward. He would follow her like her shadow until he finally had what he asked of her.And if it was just the certainty that she no longer loved him: Cole would follow her.
How much she wished she could turn her feelings for him on and off like a lamp whenever she wanted. Then she would not have let him go, she would have stuck his own dagger between the ribs. But the opportunity was over and he wouldn't make it that easy for her from now on. Merry sighed lightly and then walked towards the police station. She felt as if she was betraying Cole, but kept telling herself that this was perfectly okay and even necessary. She couldn't let him go on however he wanted to. Somebody had to stop him! And that someone she would be ... If only she had the courage.
Her steps quickened and before she knew it, she was running. She ran so fast that she stumbled and twisted; The heel of her left shoe made a ghastly sound when it broke off.She hit hard and was about to get up again when ...
"You don't have to kiss the ground at my feet," said an amused voice. Merry would have recognized her if she had been deaf in both ears, because it was the voice of the man she loved and who had killed her two children anyway.
She pressed her head against the cold asphalt. She didn't want to look into his eyes, couldn't. Merry looked forward with one eye and saw his shiny black shoes. Right next to his feet, a piece of chewing gum was stuck to the floor (yes, that would be of great interest to me in such a situation ...) He leaned down to her and she squeezed her eyes tight. For two minutes she felt his fingers brushing the hair from her face. "Get up," he said in his still amused tone. Still, she didn't miss the commanding undertone in his voice.
Merry's only reaction to his words was that she pressed her head even closer to the floor. He wouldn't be able to kill her here, there were far too many witnesses on the square for that. She hoped that if she ignored him hard enough, it would go away. She didn't dare to face him. And when she looked into his happy face and his soft features again, she wouldn't be able to do anything again. He would have it completely under his control.
"People are already looking over," he explained to her, slightly offended, and she felt his strong hand on her shoulder, pulling her to her feet. She still kept her eyes closed. She almost felt his scrutinizing look on her. He sighed briefly, then the pressure on her shoulder disappeared. Everything around Merry was silent.
She had thought she could at least hear his breathing or the screams and din of other people, but it was completely quiet. She must have stood there for a few minutes before she dared to open her eyes again. The street noise immediately resumed. It was as if time had stood still until just now and as if everything was only now continuing, as if at the push of a button. She heard the cry of a baby somewhere nearby and the soft voice of a mother trying to calm it down. She heard a boy's declarations of love for his girlfriend, the cars driving by, how an old woman argued with her daughter, everything. Only Cole was gone. She looked straight out onto an empty street. There was absolutely nothing to indicate that he had been standing there until just a moment.
As fast as she could - but careful not to fall this time - she continued her way to the police station with a sore foot and a missing heel. She pushed open the heavy doors and entered the building.
It didn't look half as beautiful inside as the sight outside would have led one to expect. It was cramped and small, the only piece of furniture in the lobby was a water dispenser with a thick "Out of Service" sign on it. When he heard the solid oak door slam, a policeman approached them almost immediately. She recognized him as the young officer who had recently been to her house and interviewed her.
“Hello, Miss. Can I help you?” He took off his hat as he spoke to her. She noticed that he called her "Miss" even though he knew she was married. Maybe he knew something was wrong when her husband didn't even come, when his two children were murdered. Either way, he didn't ask her about it and she was very grateful to him for it. Cole controlled her thoughts whether she was asleep or awake: Other people didn't have to concern themselves with him.
"Can I help you?" The policeman repeated, slightly worried, and she looked up at him. Yes, damn it: what was she doing here? She hadn't come to report Cole. She still wasn't ready for that. Why did she go in here?
She didn't know and didn't have a suitable explanation to give the officer. So she just stood there with her mouth slightly open and stared at him. Gradually the situation started to get slightly embarrassing when suddenly someone from behind put a hand on her shoulder.
"Hey, Merry. See you again ..."
Her heart seemed to stop.
I always knew that you'd leave me
Who would need someone just like me
I was born on the 13th
And of course it is raining
When I'm finally on holiday
How can anybody wonder
Tell me why do you think that it's good
They're gonna fry my heart in hell, yeah they should
I count to 3 and let go
I'm turning it inside out
I'm turning the black to white
I'm making day out of night
I'm feeling lost but I'm not stranded
I'm getting what's all about
I'm turning my life around
I'm feeling lost but I'm not stranded
I was born on the 13th
I don't need any good luck charms
I'm surprised that I've made it
Antoher year is behind me
Blowing out all the birthday candles
I know just what I'm wishing
I won't bother 'bout the superstitious crap I'mCarrying around
'Cause I have my number to keep me from going under
:;:;:; Hehe, in the next and thus again the last Kapi there will be the grand finale! :;:;:;:;:
