Chapter 2: If I Could Fly

"The wounds aren't that bad, they just need some rest," said the nurse reassuringly, who had taken care of Merry and was talking about the wounds on her face. "A scar will definitely remain," she added before saying goodbye and leaving the room. It was an uncomfortable certainty that the wounds that Cole had inflicted on her would leave a scar. So she would have a lasting memory of this man who had taken everything from her and to whom her heart still belonged.
Merry had briefly been questioned by the police about the matter, but the interrogation was broken off after a short time, as they must have noticed that she was not capable of something like that. She hadn't spoken at all, to anyone, since the experience with Cole two days ago. It seemed to Merry that years had passed, but it still wouldn't let go of her. Every time she closed her eyes, no matter for how long, her head automatically conjured up the images of Cole's fingers with the blood of his children on them. She staggered into the street, staggering like a drunk. In fact, there was no longer any place to go: her apartment was protected by the police, as was all the other apartments in the house. Merry couldn't go to her parents either, because she hadn't had any contact with them since her marriage to Cole. They had always suspected what was in him. The police had given her the address from a psychologist, but she had already lost it. Nor did she have any money with her.
She didn't notice where her feet were taking her and was completely surprised when she found herself in front of a shabby restaurant that had gone bankrupt years ago. The restaurant where she had met Cole at the time.

It had rained that evening, or afternoon to be precise. Merry really only wanted to ride his bike to work, as he usually did when she was surprised by the masses of water. It was so strong that she had no choice but to take refuge in this very restaurant to stay dry.And there he stood: the wet, black hair stuck to his face, the absolutely soaked cigarette in his mouth, which kept going out, a black coat wrapped tightly around his shoulders. He was moving between the tables so confidently that Merry was almost too intimidated to even speak to him. Fortunately (okay, maybe not in retrospect) he came to see her. He silently threw his coat over her, as she had stopped right in the doorway in shock to meet such a handsome man and the rain was still dripping on her head. "Unfortunately I don't have an umbrella, you have to go to the guy over there," he said friendly and then added: "You could just come in." Only then did she notice where she was standing and so suddenly jumped out of the rain that she stepped on his feet. The coat fell to the floor.
It was only when he kindly asked her not to put on her combat boots the next time she jumped on him that she noticed that she was standing on his foot.Again she jumped far away and almost stumbled if he hadn't quickly put an arm around her and supported her. Merry felt herself blush. Now they were outside again, in the rain. Some of the restaurant patrons stared at the two of them, slightly amused. You probably thought it was just a couple who had known each other for ages or acquaintances who were joking around. It never occurred to anyone that this was the first time they'd met. It didn't seem like that even to Merry. She seemed to sink into the incredibly bright eyes of this man ... She didn't even feel the rain that was dripping directly onto her head.

Now the windows were boarded up and it wasn't raining either. The sun was covered by a few clouds, but today it seemed to shine a little brighter than usual, so that you could see it through the cloud curtain. So that she could laugh at Merry for her terrible helplessness. She could have done something. It wasn't as if Merry didn't stand a chance when Cole stormed past her into the nursery. But her legs were as soft as pudding. She would have tripped if she had taken more than one step. She was scared of Cole, even more scared than anything else. But even bigger than the fear was the horrible feeling that her heart made her heart beat faster every damn time he touched her.
She stood in front of the restaurant for a while, undecided. "Excuse me, Miss ..." a little boy said so suddenly that she winced. She turned to him and looked into a nervous, freckled face. He was wearing a blue boy scout uniform and had a small can in his hand. "Would you maybe help me? My scout examiner said that I should find my way to the town hall in this city if I want the next badge ... But I don't know my way around here ..." He padded up uncertainly the other."Of course I'll help you. I can show you there if you like," Merry replied as she leaned down to him. The little one beamed and when she saw his broad grin, she ruffled his short, black hair with her hand. After a split second, however, she withdrew her hand as she remembered how she used to do it with her own children. And would never be able to do it again.
She had wanted to be there when the coroner picked up the bodies, but she hadn't been allowed. The policeman who stopped her was younger than she was and didn't seem happy at all that he had to inspect the scene. He'd said she really shouldn't do this to herself. Nevertheless, one day later he called her with a heavy heart, saying she had to come back and identify the children. Just a matter of form, he had thought. Still, he kept telling her how sorry he was that he had to put it through her.It was not his fault. That nice cop with the twisted smile. She hadn't married him, after all, and it wasn't him who had killed her children.
She felt tears in the corners of her eyes. "Miss?" Asked the little boy, worried. She blinked quickly and almost instantly regained her own smile. "I'm sorry, I was distracted. Follow me," she asked and took his hand. Where else could she have gone? What else could she have done?

I have been falling
Falling backwards
In slow motion
Going down
Nothing is changing
But the distance to the sun
I have been trying
Find a long time
To get my feet back on the ground
I lost my gravity
Is this how life should be

If I could fly
I'd leave every burden behind
I would

If I could find
The way to the stars
I'd follow them one by one

I have been falling
Through the silence
Always deeper underground
I'm asking questions
But the answers are so clearAnd I know ...
I lost my gravity
Is this how life should be

I'm not who I used to be
I'm fighting the enemy in me
It seems to be stronger
But not any longer
Is there anyone out there who could teach me how to fly?
