Im Licht der Dunkelheit
Morten and the cathedral
"What did you think of showing up here again? Did you think it was over?", Morten asked me with a disappointed look. I just looked at him petrified. Yes, I should have known, I had known. It would never really end, just as one could have tried to stop the course of the world. But it was just unbelievable that we were back in this place. Here where it all started. In the silent cathedral. "Oh, would you have just never come back here.", He complained, as if he had read my thoughts, which after everything I had experienced with him wouldn't really have been impossible. No matter how long I knew him, he was still a very mysterious person to me. However normal he looked with his blond hair and glasses. It was also no secret that his passion was card reading and the occult. I never understood much of it myself, and no matter how hard he tried to bring it to me, I was just sure that I would never learn.Even so, he had never ceased to believe that I had a special talent at this, which certainly flattered me, but I always wondered when he would finally start to doubt it. I didn't want to think about it any longer either.
"Tell me," I suddenly began, as I seemed to loosen myself from my stiffness, "Didn't you somehow suspect it, or something? I mean, didn't you ... see anything?", He just sparkled disappointedly to: "Did you really think I could see that?". I looked down depressed. He hated stupid questions, I knew that, but in some situations there was nothing else you could do. It was then that I realized how much I missed Darlon. I could have talked to him about everything properly. Morten might be an interesting person, but you just couldn't talk to him properly, you couldn't laugh with him, he was too serious. We were only here together .. yes, why actually? I had gone to the cathedral alone, also for a reason I didn't know myself, and Morten had suddenly been there. But I didn't speak to him about that now, not after what had happened. We were still half petrified for about a quarter of an hour in the same place, where we had just seen our shared vision. In front of a life-size angel statue, which had tried to pierce us with a devilish look from its fiery red eyes like lightning and which just tried to grab me with its petrified arms, tore a small but painful wound in my upper arm and pulled me out her predator's mouth, studded with vampire teeth, from which black blood flowed like an angry chimera had hissed. Morten had done something I didn't know exactly what, but suddenly he had a small black candle in his hand, lit it, mumbled words and stuck a small golden needle right through it, whereupon the candle went out again. And with the flame also the ghost of the transformed angel statue.I already knew such little magic actions from Morten, but what really shook me was the fact that such a demon had easily entered this holy place and then used an angel statue as host. I should have known. Morten had told me often enough that such holy places were preferred by the demons and that was precisely why we had stayed away from them. I guess I just didn't want to understand and I also understood that he was mad at me now. Why did I come back here in the first place? I had no reason for it and when I saw his pale face because this action had cost him so much strength, I was twice as sorry.
"Come on. Let's get out of here," I said to Morten after a while. He gave me an indefinable look and agreed, but insisted on taking me home. I thought that in his condition it wouldn't have been a very good idea and then I managed to persuade him to leave me alone at the bus stop.He was incredibly grateful for it, I felt it and sat down in the bus stop. Only now did I notice how much today's events had drained my strength, when I suddenly felt the piercing looks of a young woman who was sitting next to me. She stared at me unabashedly even when I looked back. She was really beautiful. Long, black hair and made up and dressed like a Goth. Whatever angelic face she had, I absolutely didn't like her staring at me like that. Especially since I really didn't want anything more than just to get home the fastest way possible. Then the bus finally came and I sat down in one of the first rows, there you always had peace and quiet. But of course only not today. The woman who had just stared at me sat down next to me, even though there were still many empty rows on the bus. I looked at her annoyed and asked her: "What is that supposed to mean?". Now if you say "What?" asks, I'll scream in despair, I thought to myself. But she just looked at me with a frown: "So you are friends with Morten?", She began. I was no longer surprised, I just sighed softly and answered with a: "Yeah?". "You know," she continued, "he was my card reading teacher and brought us close to the occult". "Great," I thought, suppressing a disinterested and extremely rude eye roll. What was that supposed to mean? Was she expecting my ears to ring and suddenly find her so interesting that I begged for their friendship? What did I have to do with it? "And what do you want from me then?" I asked after she made no move to continue. "Neither of us has personal contact with him. We watched him and never saw him at the side of anyone other than you," she said with a triumphant look that disgusted me. "Oh, mass stalking? Should I help you with your detective games, or what?", I replied rather annoyed in peace!". For a moment she actually looked at me in astonishment, but then it turned into a mock understanding." I'm sorry, but I really can't take it into account. "I looked at her indignantly as she continued:" You are obviously our master's private student ... "" What? No! ", I threw in confused, but she continued unimpressed:" ... and that should mean something, you know, you are ... "She suddenly broke off and suddenly seemed to be unable to breathe. She choked and There was only a squeaking gasp from her throat. I was afraid she was going to choke, but when I was about to panic for help, she grabbed my sleeve and pulled me back. Now she was breathing normally again and seeing me now seriously. "Beware of him," she said, "I am your ally." Then she jumped up and sat down in one of the back seats to get off at the next stop. I just looked after her in disbelief. What was that? At first she spoke of Morten as if she were worshiping him and the next moment she warned me about him? Even if I wasn't on the best of terms with him, I had known him long enough to know he was a good person. I trusted him and I felt that I was not wrong about it. I could always rely on my feelings.
When I got home I was so exhausted that all I could do was lie down and sleep. I had this dream again and this time it went on. The cathedral was burned to the ground and I came out without a scratch. I saw again how I had met Morten back then. But one thing was different in the dream than it was in reality. He had ... demon wings. . . and still saved me. Damn it, he fought God! My memory slowly returned. Morten still had "You won't kill her!" yelled, couldn't defeat the gentleman, of course, but could stop him. Then he fled and took me with him when he flew by. And when I woke up he was a normal person. I hadn't even noticed my rescue operation because I was unconscious. That thought really frightened me, no, it shook me. I had seen reality in a dream. . . that I really missed?
I woke up at nine the next morning. A hell of a time for the weekend and my circumstances. And I felt like I was hangover, but I just couldn't get back to sleep. So the first thing I needed was a strong coffee. When I entered the kitchen, I suddenly froze. With eyes wide in horror, I stared at the medium-sized oil painting in front of me. It could be seen on it. . . Fire that had the rough outline of a church. And in front of it stood a triumphant, shining angel, who stood over a dying demon. Since when did my mother have such thoughts? And why was I just seeing this same damn picture over and over again? My horror slowly broke out into despair. My mother was an artist, so the picture itself wasn't anything special, but how did she come up with the subject?
When I saw her during the day, I didn't ask her about it. What should I have said? My relationship with my parents wasn't so good that I talked to them about my dreams. I thought that was also a very personal thing and said too much about the state of my own soul; I had learned that from Morten. I didn't want them to worry.
All of these recent events brought back memories of what happened then. I just had to think about it again now, especially after this dream. Even before its fire, this cathedral was always shunned by the people. She was dishonored because there had been a number of suicides in it since shortly after it was built, as well as other mysterious accidents. She was generally considered cursed. But they didn't want to tear it down, not after all the work involved in building it and all the costs. So the decision was made to just leave it there, there on the outskirts of the city as a religious eyesore. Nobody would have built his house at this point anyway. And over the decades it slowly deteriorated, but only from the outside and hardly anyone came near it. Not even the fire brigade when the fire broke out. They just let the cathedral burn down and no one came to gawk, as was often the case with fires. No police were involved in the case. They were just glad that the ghost was finally going to end. But it was not like that. I still got a stomachache today when I thought about what had happened. Because the cathedral was not burned down. I still remembered how I had become half crazy when I saw her standing there the next day, unchanged and undamaged, as if she had never received a single spark. She was just there again and smirked at me, showing me that I must be crazy, with nothing but the same scratches and damage on the outside wall that she had had days
