Chapter Four:
Deep in the canyon

"Ah! It feels like I've broken all my bones, but I'm not dead! I'm alive!" She managed to say after waking up.
With pain and gasping, she sat up. She looked up and saw the cliffs four or five meters above her. She still wondered if she had survived this fall. She tried to get up but could not straighten her left leg and fell back to the floor. She tried one more time, but this time down and moaned. Her leg was broken. She sat up again and looked for other injuries on her body. Part of her skin was scraped and some blood was running out. Her wrist was bruised and swollen. Blood ran down her face from a wound on her temple and she felt dizzy. She tried to pull herself up on a strand of a plant that was growing deep down in the ravine, so far that she couldn't see where it was beginning. Still clutching the strand of the plant with one hand and leaning against the bare, hard rock with the other, she looked around. Nowhere did she see anything that could help her get back upstairs.
"I have no choice: I have to climb to the top for better or worse! I have to at least try, otherwise I will never get out of here!"
She held onto the plant with both hands. But she felt a sharp pain in her head. She staggered and threatened to fall from the ledge when a strange, strange feeling overcame her, as if her soul was split in two and one part was taken from her. She felt gusts of wind and something grabbed her arms and pulled her upstairs. Dazed, she looked up at the creature that she had saved. Two large blue paws with long, pointed claws held her tight. The creature had a long, scaly body and a tail that ended in a sharp spike. With a jerk she was set down by the creature in the shade of a tree. The creature vanished into thin air and that feeling overcame Jessica again, but this time as if her soul was returning to her body. She became even more dizzy and passed out.

Much time passed before she woke up. She was exhausted. The fall and the injuries had bothered her hard. Except for one fruit, she hadn't eaten anything that day. What should she do now? She didn't know where she came from. Jáy was certainly worried and was already looking for her, but she couldn't even try to get up, let alone go back to the camp. Exhausted, tired and starved, she lay in the shade of the tree. The sun was slowly going down. The sky was already slightly reddish in color.
She closed her eyes and tried to get some sleep when she heard a voice. The voice approached. It was Jáy! She opened her eyes again and sat up, her face contorted with pain. Jáy came closer and closer.
"Here I am, Jáy! Here, by the cliff!" She called out to him, exhausted and in a low voice. He ran to her and yelled at her: "Where have you been all this time ?!", more worried, but still angry, he asked further, "What happened to you? Why are you bleeding? Why did you just run away? I did worried because you just disappeared!
"I can't walk. My leg is broken".
"How did that happen?" He asked further.
"Earlier, I heard such a screeching. That's why I ran to find the source of the noise, but when I got to the cliff, part of the rock broke off and fell into the ravine - and me with it. What happened then and how I got up here is also a mystery to me, as if this part of my memories had been erased from my brain. But I think when I was up here again, I passed out, "she told him, also as surprised as he was. He continued to look very perplexed.
"Then," he said finally, "I have no choice but to carry you back to our camp." He put her on his back and walked back at a comfortable pace.
"You Jáy," said Jessica with great pain and a queasy feeling in her stomach.
"Yeah, what is it, Jess?" He asked.
"I ... well, when I ran away earlier, I closed my eyes and concentrated and suddenly I knew where to run; well ... actually only my legs knew where to go, because I didn't see wherever I went, but still I was on the right path. I think through my concentration a strength has formed in me, which, so to speak, has lengthened my legs and wanted to lead me to my goal - until I opened my eyes and the abyss saw in front of me ... "Jáy thought about it, but then answered her: "That is quite possible. Perhaps you are already developing this strength that this man had spoken of, or perhaps you just have to wake her up, perhaps you already have a gift".
"Jáy, can you always use your ability or do you have to concentrate for it too?" Jessica asked in a more cheerful mood. The thought that she was something special and that she could do something that no one else could do, pleased her very much; but she knew she still had to work on this ability because after all she almost jumped over the cliff with her eyes closed and would probably be dead!
"No, like you, I have to concentrate very much and forget all other thoughts in order to be able to read what other people or animals think. When you are angry, you can often use your ability, but you have to learn to concentrate, to control your ability! Through anger, it controls you and you can not control it and does things you do not want to do!", he replied instructively.

After a while they arrived at their camp. Jáy put Jessica on the floor by the fire. He handed her a bowl of something that looked like thick soup. Jáy had fried the bird, chopped it up and mixed it with chopped and steamed nuts, berries, fruits and mushrooms.
"That's really good! Where did you learn to cook?" Asked Jessica, surprised that a boy could prepare something like that.
"I have no idea. I had to teach myself here so that I wouldn't starve to death," he replied somewhat proudly.
After dinner she felt better and felt stronger. Jáy gave her a few leaves, a flag and straw on which she tried to make herself comfortable as best she could. He made her a tea, according to him, beneficial and healing herbs, which tasted of nothing and smelled disgusting, smeared her bruised wrist and broken leg with a cooling, but burning ointment and wrapped long, thin, hard-wearing ointments around it Leaves. She lay down and was about to sleep when she felt something hard under the straw. She pushed it aside a little and found a dirty stone there.
She wiped the upper
flatten something with her hand and see a figure on the rectangular stone. It was a dragon.
"Jáy, look what was lying here! A stone with a dragon image!"
