Alone again
Cyron preceded me through the great gate of the castle. We crossed a tall, candle-lit hall and walked down a small corridor. Cyron stopped in front of a large door and let the heavy doorknob crash against the wood.I didn't wait for an answer and opened the door. The room that was hidden behind it was large and also full of candles, a fire crackled in a fireplace. The wooden floor was covered with carpets. At the end of the room was a large desk next to full bookshelves that reached to the ceiling. In one corner three scantily clad vampires lolled around, in their midst was Drake, who had just had his dinner. Drake dropped the lifeless body carelessly to the floor. He looked at us somewhat startled.
"Drake we need to talk," said Cyron.
Drake nodded briefly and sent the vampires out of the room. My eyes fell on his neck, which was adorned with a long scar. These were clearly the traces of our argument a few weeks ago. As soon as the door closed behind them, Cyron began to speak again, "Drake we have to do something. It's been 2 months since you sent the spies! They wouldn't be away that long if something wasn't going on.We should secure the castle and arm the men while we still can! By the time the spies come back, it might be too late! "
Drake was unimpressed. "As long as we have no news from the men that proves otherwise, we can assume that there is nothing special to report."
“If there was nothing to report, you would be back long ago!” Cyron protested. It went back and forth for a while. Drake didn't want to panic and was sure the werewolf had only been here by chance. Cyron's efforts to convince him otherwise fell on deaf ears. So far I had stayed out of the discussion, but now I had to realize that we were not getting anywhere on this path. A low growl came from my throat as I put my hand on the sôtto-kei-shi. Drake suddenly drained the color from his face. He stared at me, startled. "DRAKE! YOU'RE GOING TO DO SOMETHING NOW!I DON'T MATTER WHETHER YOU PUT A DEFENSE, PREPARE THE WEREWOLVES WITH A COUNTER-ATTACK, OR WE CREATE A DIFFERENT CLAN, BUT FINALLY DO SOMETHING! "I thundered.
That worked. Drake hadn't forgotten what had happened the last time I lost my temper. "well you are right," he stuttered quickly, probably more out of fear than out of insight, "Cyron, call all the vampires together, in half an hour I'll be in the assembly hall, bring everyone there ... And Anna ... you better go to." Tom, he should try to get enough armor and weapons ... "The instructions came rather indecisively and hesitantly, but at least he did something, so I followed his instructions, even if I didn't particularly like his command tone, which he had now regained . I ran to Tom and told him what had just happened. He was less surprised than I expected and handed me an elongated object hidden in a coat.“That's Edward's sword,” he said. "Take care until he comes back and don't let Drake see it, he always thought this sword was his as the leader of the clan ... He doesn't know I have it. Take it away before anyone sees it ..." I nodded and took it to our little hut as quickly as I could. I carefully locked the door to Ceredas, who, as always, had followed me like a shadow. "ever now I can finally see it !!" I cheered inwardly, but my anticipation would be dashed by a loud knock on the door. Grumbling, I hid the sword in Edward's coffin and opened the door. It was Cyron. "Where are you staying? Everyone else has long been with Drake!"
Oops the gathering! I had been so lost in thought of the sword all along that I had totally forgotten about it. We ran into the hall just as Drake entered the room. He gave roughly the same lecture that we had given him before, and pretended that he had never had anything else in mind but to set up a defense as quickly as possible and defend the clan as best he could.I could tell from the look on Cyron's face that he too had doubts about Drake's leadership. The next night the preparations should start, because it was already getting light when he finished his speech and I had to hurry again to get into my coffin in time. I wondered for the thousandth time why Edward voluntarily lived so secluded from everyone else.
I woke up earlier than usual the next evening, the sun had just set and yet there was already a lot of activity outside. I was greeted by Ceredas so stormily that you might think he hadn't seen me for a year. I ruffled his fur and went to Edward's coffin. I finally wanted to look at the sword. I carefully knocked the fabric aside and pulled out the sword. It was unusually light for its size. The shiny blade was barely two arms long but slender and elegant. The handle was decorated with rubies and just above it I discovered an engraving in the blade. Runes I couldn't read, but they too were artistic. The scabbard was as ornate as the sword itself. I could well understand that Drake was trying to get it and wondered how Edward got hold of such a precious sword, but I didn't have long to think about it. I finally had to see what was going on out there. Drake's speech yesterday had undoubtedly changed something, the only question was what ... I grabbed the sôtto-kei-shi, then stepped outside the door and at first I was quite surprised. Half the clan romped around in front of Tom's hut, everyone wanted the best possible sword and armor, some complained about a sword that was too short and greaves that were too tight ... I was really sorry for Tom, he was harassed from all sides who had not yet been equipped were jostling around and constantly shouting that they were the next ones who had already received their equipment, complaining that it was too bad or would not fit.It was like kindergarten. I spotted Cyron in the crowd trying to help Tom distribute the equipment, but 2 for about 100, that was clearly not enough. And more and more vampires were added. So I ran to them and helped them as best I could to calm the crowd, after half an hour Cyron and I had at least managed to line them up. While Tom was distributing the weapons and armor, Cyron took care of the disaffected vampires. Most of them had ridiculous problems, especially the female vampires (especially the 3 we saw at Drake's yesterday), one of whom refused to wear armor that was rusty in places, another thought the dagger and her shoes would not match, so I did After a short time I asked if they were actually aware of the seriousness of the situation. But there were enough vampires here who had understood the situation very well and started training immediately after receiving their equipment.Still others exaggerated their concern, so some vampires stood there crying and moaning and doing nothing but pity themselves. I did my best to calm them down without losing my nerve and after a while they realized that crying wouldn't help them. We spent the whole night trying to please all the vampires more or less. The next night was a bit quieter, even if I got a little shock when I saw the vampires fight for the first time. Many of them looked like they had never held a sword, and I guess many of them really never had. There were only a few who could teach them the basics of sword fighting and so these tasks once again stuck with me, among other things. However, the situation in the wolf pack was definitely more catastrophic. Many of them had never been properly trained and were not afraid to bite their own trainers. To get them out and train them to hunt werewolf again would take longer.Ceredas kept intervening when one of the wolves tried to attack me or another vampire, but very few of them came to their senses, which was actually no wonder, because the wolves made a rather neglected impression. They were locked in a kind of stable all day and only a few of them were used often. I had my doubts that we would get them back under control in time, but they made faster progress over the next few nights than I had thought. Cyron had been entrusted with their care and within a week no wolf dared to bite a vampire. But I still worried, we didn't have a great chance if the werewolves attacked in large numbers, because the fighters made slow progress and swords broke again and again during training, so Tom had problems supplying everyone with enough weapons. He didn't have the time or materials to make higher quality weapons and Drake made no move to worry about Tom's problems. So it would be time for a serious conversation with Drake again ... but to my surprise, he got ahead of me. One night he called me and a few other vampires, most of them the soldiers from the watchtowers. He distributed some tasks among us, Cyron should be the leader of the wolves and take care of the defense of the castle, to my surprise he had even thought of assigning someone to check the secret exit from the castle. He asked me to keep an eye on everything and always help where it was needed, but first I should look after new raw materials for Tom. I was surprised that Cyron, who usually refused to let anyone help him, now shed so much responsibility and used new
