Chapter: Breath of cold

Prologue: A breath of cold

It was a cool summer morning in Manhattan. The sun only rose a few hours ago and it turned the whole city a soft red-orange. With a coffee mug in one hand and a packet of croissants in the other, Brianna Hill went to see her friend Phibi. She took the little detour through Central Park. At that time she met few people. Here and there a jogger who uses the quiet to run his laps undisturbed and sometimes someone who went for a walk with his dog.
Otherwise it wasn't so unusually cold in New York that one was seriously considering the idea of putting on a coat and winter boots. But despite the cold, Brianna only opted for a transition jacket and ballet flats.
She was a little late when she reached one of the many entrances and exits of the park and waved a taxi for the rest of the way. It wasn't long before she was standing in front of a large house in which an apartment belonged to Phibi and her mother. She paid the taxi driver, got out of the orange and yellow car and walked to the large front door that led to a huge lobby. The potier recognized her immediately, wished her good morning, which she returned with a friendly nod, and took the elevator to the sixth floor of the building. A small gong rang and the elevator door opened. Immediately she was in Phibi's apartment. She went straight to the living room of the huge apartment and sat down on one of the white, fluffy armchairs. She put the mug and the croissants on the glass table.
"Morning, Brianna," came a bright voice from behind her. "You're late. I thought I was going to starve." With a playful expression on her face, Phibi walked around the armchair and the glass table and sat down on the sofa, which was also white. She was still wearing beige pajamas and light blue morning slippers. Her long black-brown hair was disheveled and in places protruded from her head. She yawned heartily and at the sight of the croissants her eyes widened.
"Morning. Did you still sleep?", Brianna asked her and took off her jacket while sitting.
"Well, you haven't been there yet and I thought I could go to bed again. Besides, it was so cold.", She justified herself in an innocent tone. She pulled her legs up on the sofa and wrapped her arms around them.
Brianna smiled and shook her head and got up from the chair. "Would you like tea? I just brought a cappuccino for myself." She continued into the kitchen.
"Yes, please. That would be nice. I just change my clothes quickly." And with that she disappeared into her room and certainly rummaged through her closet.
Meanwhile, Brianna put water on and looked in the cupboards for a teapot and mug. She knew that cherry blossom tea was Phibi's favorite and that she had a year's supply of it on the tea shelf. After Phibi finally wore decent clothes and the tea was ready, both friends sat on the sofa, mumbled in a soft blanket and watched TV. There were just some lame breakfast programs and SpongeBob SquarePants. We switched through the whole program until we stopped at the weather report and listened to the weather man with interest.
"... only 6 to 12 degrees Celsius. It's the coldest day of all summer and there are no signs that it will get warmer during the day. Despite the shining sun, we New Yorkers have to dress thickly today ..."
"Funny how it's so cold in summer. We haven't had it before, right?" Phibi said thoughtfully, resting her head on Brianna's shoulder. Satisfied, she nibbled on her croissant and sipped the hot tea every now and then.
"No. Unusual.", Brianna said curtly but also thought about the words of the weatherman.
"Well, it doesn't matter. When is Noelle actually coming by train?" Phibi quickly changed the subject and switched to some kind of children's channel. The squeaky, happy children's voices filled the room for a brief moment.
"In an hour and a half, I think. We'll take the taxi, won't we?" Asked Brianna, shivering at the thought of walking to Grand Central Station in the cold.
"What else? When I was still in bed, I was already frozen. Besides, the way is far too far. I really don't feel like that.", Phibi said firmly and switched off the TV. Instead, she went over to the stereo and hit play. Soft, soothing music filled the room.
In the remaining time they shared their suggestions about what they could do together during the holidays, logged on to Facebook and other sites and rummaged through Phibi's wardrobe in the hope of finding a warm sweater.

After a while, the two girls made their way to Grand Central Station. It wasn't particularly difficult for two New Yorkers to pick up a taxi with the perfect taxi wink.
When Brianna and Phibi started looking for the railroad track, Stacy Xandra met them. Stacy was one of the prime examples of not having children, as Brianna always said when she ran into the high school student. Which wasn't particularly difficult, since she was taking the same history class as Brianna and Noelle. Why Stacy chose history in the first place is a mystery to all three girls. Most of the time she just sat around, painted her fingernails and wrote notes with her best friend Georgina Bornes, which the girls don't really like either. The mostly pink slips of paper always said that they found the hairstyle of a certain person ugly or how cute the 12th grade boys are. It was annoying when the paper balls flew from one to the other overhead.Especially when you want to listen for once and don't want to beat up the next test.
Stacy Xandra stumbled past the two friends on purple 8cm high heels. On her right arm was a Louis Vuitton bag, which she presented with an arrogant grin.
"Conceited chick. She can put her bag somewhere else.", Brianna growled when she noticed that Stacy was giving her a mocking look.
"Brianna! Just ignore her. That's what she wants: to make you mad! But you mustn't give her a chance.", Phibi looked urgently at Brianna, who was half a head taller.
The blonde knew her friend was right. She also tried to curb herself a little, but this time this attempt has backfired. And that made her even angrier. Again and again she cursed this Stacy for it.
Through the loudspeaker system, the two heard that the train in which Noelle was sitting was just entering the station.
They set off quickly. Angry shouts and many indignant looks, they ignored when they bumped into so many people to get to platform seven. The track was even more clogged than the entire entrance hall of Grand Central Station. After a quick search, Phibi saw a brunette girl in a black, baggy sweater sitting on a bench. She had tied her hair in a curly braid and was busy all the time tucking the strands of hair that fell into her face behind her ears. In addition, 16-year-old girls wore black glasses on their noses that by no means looked nerdy. She matched the funky and cranky Noelle perfectly and looked kind of cool too. Nevertheless, she was rarely seen with the typical glasses, as she almost always wore contact lenses. But you don't have to make the extra effort for a long flight or train journey.
"Ey! Noelle!" Phibi called out to the girl, who immediately turned her head in her direction and took the ear studs from her mp3 player headset out of her ears.
She jumped up and hugged the two girls tightly. "Ahh, finally! I've missed you.", Noelle said and let go of her friends. A radiant smile spread across her face and made her dark eyes shine.
After the stormy greeting, the three of them made their way outside with Noelle's luggage, which incidentally was heavier and heavier than it seemed.
"Uhhhhh! I'm so hungry! The plane mess is really not for me." She grimaced in disgust, which made Brianna and Phibi laugh so much that they almost ran into a group of tourists. "Let's go to Strabucks, please. I really want a blueberry and chocolate muffin. I missed it, honestly!"
“Yeah, okay.” Brianna couldn't resist her friend's dachshund look and Noelle ordered one of her beloved muffins in her favorite cafe."Really! France is really impressive, but they don't have as good muffins there as in New York!" Enthused Noelle and munched on her muffin with satisfaction as she walked on.
They took a taxi again, put Noelle's suitcase in the trunk and briefly argued about the two window seats until Brianna promptly sat down next to the Indian driver and gave the somewhat puzzled expression a friendly smile.
On the way back to Phibi's apartment, where she had forgotten her cell phone, Noelle kept talking about Paris, the French and the fantastic weather there. "... at least there was a French guy in the group. I'm pretty sure he was gay. But something like that. He was wearing a light pink T-shirt and tight jeans. The shiny hair was of course perfectly styled and his easy-going look told volumes. And how he talked, God! "She had to calm down for a moment, because she had fallen into her hysterical laugh again when she thought of the gay French. "Heavenly! No, divine! You should have been there ..."
The Indian next to Brianna sometimes had to start grinning too. He's sure not to forget a taxi ride like this.
When they stopped at Phibi's apartment, they paid the taxi driver and made their way to the apartment, still laughing out loud. The potier frowned when 3 angry girls stumbled into the entrance hall and waved him happily.
The elevator door opened and an icy breeze swept their faces. Laughing, Phibi stepped into the apartment, but turned around in confusion when she realized that Brianna and Noelle were not by her side. The two did not move an inch and stared past Phibi, who was now following their gaze. Her mouth fell when she realized that there were half a dozen wild strangers in her living room ...
