Chapter 20: Man
The man woke up naked in a bush. He had dark, tangled hair and his head was buzzing. Where am I, he thought. What am i doing here? The guy looked around and found himself in the middle of a forest full of ferns and lianas. The ground under his feet was soft and he felt the crumbly earth. It must have rained not so recently. He eyed the sky above. The sun had just risen and cold mist pervaded the bushes of the jungle. Bird calls seemed to come from all over the place. His only thought was that he needed some clothes and some breakfast. When he straightened up, he noticed that all strength had drained from his body. Then he picked up a gnarled staff from the leafy forest floor and leaned on it. He tried to remember his life, but only one name came to mind, Jack. The stranger leaned against a large, old, moss-covered trunk and admired its roots. Some brown mushrooms grew at its foot. Jack started to pick them and tried one. It tasted awful, but the plant satisfied his hunger. It had taken some effort, but now he wasn't quite as hungry. Suddenly he felt an ice cold breeze and the lush green leaves of the trees were shaken. In the distance he heard the splash of water and roamed through the forest to the point where a spring flowed. She jumped over sharp stones and Jack put his hand down to draw water. He shrank back when he wanted to wash, because the cool water was fresh in the morning. It splashed and he recognized a trout moving up the river. Immediately he became hungry again and tried not to move. How about a delicious trout this afternoon, he thought and licked his lips. Carefully he picked up a large, flat stone from the floor and crouched down. He reached out slowly and took aim at the fish. This stayed in place for a while. Jack's hand shot out and the projectile splashed into the water. He got a few splashes in his face and looked at the churned water. Further down by the stream, the sun fell through a crack in the treetops and colored the water at this point golden. Suddenly an old woman, dressed in rags, stepped onto the bank on the other side. Before she could spot Jack, he crawled into the shade of the branches of a hedge. The woman had long, white hair and a large nose, slender eyes and wrinkled, pale skin.
