Chapter: Harbor life

Jim struggled to keep up with his father's great strides. "You papa? Do you think you'll ever see Captain Jack Sparrow again?" Jim wanted to know. William knew how curious his son was. He wouldn't rest until he got everything out of his father that he knew. So William always tried to answer every question as quickly and as conclusively as he could, but this question was something he had to think about. He had thought about it many times, but had never come to a conclusion. "I don't know. Captain Sparrow is really unpredictable at times." he replied to his son when they got to the port.
"Wow ..." Jim whispered softly. Ships as far as the eye could see! Big ships, small ships, one-masters, caravels, fishing boats, white sails, painted sails and at least half a dozen different flags! And so many people! He had never seen anything like it.
"It's great how many ships anchor here in Port Royal. The crowds, the different goods that are waiting for sale and all the different ships. "William said to Jim as they walked through the harbor.
"At some point I'll buy a ship and sail from island to island, put together a crew and become a notorious pirate!" Jim enthused to himself. His father looked into his face. “Don't say that too loudly,” he warned him, “people don't think too much of pirates.” He warned him. "Why didn't you stay a pirate? Because of mom?" Jim wanted to know. William really felt how his questioning looks pierced him. "Yes. She was getting tired of piracy. Playing cat and mouse in the sea, fighting and death, that became too much for her," he replied quickly.
"Hey you! Stand still!" shouted a couple of navy men. Apparently there was trouble again. William and Jim fought their way through the crowds to the men. A burly guy with a headscarf and lots of tattoos was standing on the quay, holding a knife to the neck of an older man.It was laid in iron and stood in front of a navy ship from England. “Probably a pirate to be hanged here,” announced a woman from the crowd.
"I want you to leave me alone!" shouted the pirate, in a very deep voice, at the marines. He did not notice how one of them sneaked up on him from behind and hit the pirate in the neck with his rifle. The burly man was a lot like a wet sack on the ground.
“Does that happen here often?” Jim seemed very enthusiastic about the idea. “Yes, unfortunately,” his father replied in a troubled voice. "Come on, we're going. Your mother is probably worried." William picked up Jim and pushed himself out of the crowd.
