The gift
Finally a little rest, thought Graf von Krolock as he sat completely relaxed in the large wing chair and read a book while the fire in the fireplace flickered cheerfully and provided the only source of light in the whole room. Since the new vampires had lived in the castle, the peace had been more or less disturbed again and again, more by Herbert and Alfred, as the count had long established. Often times his son tried to win the favor of the young scientist, but so far it has been denied him. The count looked away from the book for a moment and looked at the Venus flytrap, which was standing on a small stool by the fireplace and a fly was squeezing out life. This plant was a present from Sarah, the landlord's daughter. She said a plant would bring a little more flair to the castle, but this one, not for flies, was certain. After this almost dramatic natural spectacle, von Krolock devoted himself to his reading again, but he did not remain undisturbed for a long time. A few moments later, a suspicious door squeak made him look up again from the reading material to look into the face of his son.
"May I ask you a bit of advice, father?" Herbert asked a little cautiously when he spotted his father's face that told him that he had just come a little inconvenient. But when the head of the family put the tome aside and asked him to come close with an elegant gesture, Herbert was right back to himself.
"What is it?" Asked the count.
"You have to give me some advice on what Alfred's gift I have for him."
"How should I help you? Give it to the boy and you will see if he likes it."
"To be honest, I would like to ask you if you agree with that too," Herbert added almost fleetingly.
"And with what?" Von Krolock raised his eyebrows curiously. His offspring disappeared briefly from the room and came back a few seconds later, he was holding a wolf, more or less a wolf pup, in his arms.
"This is your present for Alfred?" The count eyed the little animal in the arms of the person opposite.
"Yeah, isn't she cute?" Said Herbert.
" You?"
"Yes, it is a she-wolf, since Alfred can cope with female company a little more. At first I had planned to give him a vulture, but the thought that this big bird might pick at Alfi was not very pleasant for me."
The count wasn't quite sure what to say about it.
"And? Are we allowed to keep a pet in the castle?" Herbert came to the core of his being there.
The count looked several times from his son to the wolf pup and vice versa. Now that had come what the count had been preparing for centuries, namely to be allowed to keep a pet.
"But you have to take good care of it and take care of it, because after all you have the responsibility," said Count Krolock with a typical parental tone that Herbert had not heard for a long time, except when he was little."Of course," Herbert replied, laying the young she-wolf on his father's lap.
"Could you please take care of her while I am looking for Alfred." Without waiting for an answer, Herbert had already disappeared from the room to visit his beloved. The hardest part was surely to persuade Alfred to come along without him immediately thinking that the count's son wanted to seduce him again.
There sat the count and on his knees the little wolf creature that lifted its head slightly to watch him. The head vampire gently stroked the soft fur of the wolf child, who after a few pats jumped onto the marble floor and steered one of the many candlesticks that were scattered around. And already what the count had feared happened, a small lake now adorned the area around the candle holder and spread out further. After the little she-wolf had left her mark, she sat down at the Count's feet and looked up at him.Wonderful, thought von Krolock, hopefully the animal would still be house-trained. Inwardly, the count saw himself sliding through the corridors caused by a puddle.
The vampire leaned down to the wolf child and then said: "You should get used to that quickly if you plan to stay here," he pointed to the puddle. The little creature tilted its head and looked at him with big puppy eyes and at least now he forgave the puppy for this little mishap. Maybe having a pet wasn't a bad idea, the Count thought. And while Herbert was still looking for Alfred, who was hiding well, the count was already preparing himself for the question that his son would surely one day ask, which was: "Can't we keep a whole pack?" A long time would surely pass before this question, of that the Count was certain, or at least he hoped.
