Chapter 2
The way to Königsberg
"Do we really have everything?" Asked the count of those who were setting out on their journey.
"Well, I've got Alfred and that's enough," grinned Herbert and put an arm around the young vampire who was looking into the big carriage, after all, their coffins also had to be transported, not to mention the other luggage.
"We seem to have it all," confirmed the professor who was supposed to drive the carriage. The count had not found a new servant since Koukol was attacked by the wolves. It was just hard to find good reliable staff these days, according to the count. Alfred, who was about to get into the carriage, was stopped by a low whine behind him.
"Oh," he looked at what had yelped at him. It was his she-wolf that Herbert had given him not so long ago. With big eyes she looked at her master because she wanted to come with him. Of course, Alfred did not want to leave his little pet behind and asked the Count for a few, with Herbert helping him, he could take them with him. When everyone managed to get into the carriage, it started right away. Chagal and Magda waved goodbye and wished them a pleasant journey.
Alfred was excited. He immediately wrote and sent a letter yesterday. Since he was there sooner than the travelers anyway, he didn't have to worry that his parents didn't know about the approaching visit.
Ragna, that was the name of the wolf whelp, looked excitedly out of the carriage window. Alfred who was sitting next to me got her pussycat cock in his face every now and then. At some point, after a long talk, the young vampire managed to encourage his sweet girl to sit quietly so as not to swallow more wolf hair. Herbert was also deeply looking outside, or was he seriously thinking about the trip? In any case, shortly before sunrise, all four disappeared into their coffins to take their daytime sleep.
On a quiet grassy plain, the professor stopped to give Ragna a little exercise first, to get a good night's sleep himself and, of course, to have a bite to eat from the travel supplies. The sun had already set and Alfred opened the lid of his coffin. He stretched and before he knew it Ragna licked his face.
"Ragna, I don't need any laundry," cried Alfred and turned his head, but that didn't help much.
"She just wanted to kiss you good evening," said Herbert's voice and he picked up the wolf child. Alfred's face was as wet as after a round bath and so he wiped his face a few times with his sleeve. The Count and Sarah had made themselves comfortable on the coach benches. The count was reading a book and Sarah looked out the window with interest, having laughed quietly earlier at Ragna's assassination attempt on Alfred. The young scientist got up in silence and asked where they were, but no one could really answer that. They were driving right through the middle of tall giants of trees and grasslands that were now and then adorned with hills. Herbert, who seemed boring, climbed through the carriage window and told Alfred to climb after him.Alfred stood a little puzzled at the window and looked up at Herbert, who had sat down on the roof.
"Should I come down and carry you up?" Grinned the vampire.
With somewhat unsteady grips and movements, the young vampire heaved himself up. Even if they didn't drive very fast, the boy was afraid of falling down and doing something else. With a little help from Herbert, who would never let his sweetheart fall down, he succeeded and so they both sat upstairs and had a really nice view. The stars weren't that much, but they sparkled so beautifully that Alfred couldn't take his eyes off them.
"Really nice, isn't it?" Breathed Herbert and put an arm and Alfred.
"Yes," Alfred just breathed and didn't seem to have noticed how his neighbor hugged him.
One night afterwards, Alfred sat excitedly at the carriage window. The closer they got to their goal, the more jittery he got. He had written to his family that they only had the opportunity to visit them at dusk.Hopefully they didn't ask too uncomfortable questions that couldn't be answered, thought Alfred and stroked Ragna's fur. The she-wolf lay on his lap and seemed to be asleep. A smile slipped over Alfred's lips as he imagined what everyone would say about his pet. His mother would certainly not find it so intoxicating, his siblings would be completely different and his father wouldn't say anything about it. The next night they would finally arrive and visit his parents the next night. Suddenly Alfred got the fleeting thought that it might not be a good idea to visit her after all. What if they found out he was a vampire. Would they really hand him over to vampire hunters and so would the others? With a slightly panicked look he looked at everyone in the carriage.
“Alfred?” Herbert, who was sitting next to him, looked at him questioningly and worriedly. "Are you sick? You are so pale."
"M-I'm fine," said Alfred and noticed that Herbert put a hand on his forehead."You're still worried, aren't you? You don't need to," whispered Herbert to comfort Alfred. Unfortunately, these words had little effect. They certainly wouldn't turn back and it was too late for that anyway.
"So that's Koenigsberg," said Herbert with a curious look through the window.
"It's just a city, nothing more," said Alfred. "All cities look the same. High houses, a lot of people, a lot of thieves," he enumerated and remembered how the entire contents of his bag were stolen from him without noticing.
"I think it looks great," Sarah intervened and smiled encouragingly at Alfred, who was a little embarrassed. "I've never got to know a big city."
"No wonder, with such a father who acts like a hamster and bunkers his daughter better than the food," grinned Herbert.
"Hm," said the girl and didn’t even bother to answer him.
The carriage stopped in front of a large building and the professor opened the carriage door."We have reached our goal, dear friends," reported Prof. Abronsius with a cheerful tone and made a gallant gesture that asked everyone to get out.
It was night, but there were still quite a few people on the road, mostly poor looking ones and others who didn't look very trustworthy. A group of ragged clad people looked contemptuously at the travelers who had just arrived and eyed them critically.
"Really lovely people," said Herbert with distinct sarcasm.
A few seconds later the small group were in an entrance hall of the small hotel. The professor and the count took care of their rooms while the rest waited. Herbert seemed to be envisioning sharing a room with Alfred, but then his father's room allocation thwarted him, or rather his stinginess. On the occasion of the prices - at which the count almost passed out - he said that all males could share the largest room and Sarah would get her own."If then Sarah could have come with us in our room," said Herbert, who didn't want to see that she got a room to herself.
"I'm not alone," said Sarah.
"Why?" Asked Alfred.
"Ragna will stay with me, right?" She leaned down to the she-wolf, who licked Sarah's hand.
Herbert opened his mouth to let go of a little tease, but when his father looked at him sharply, he preferred to close it again. Now there was still a small problem to be dealt with and how were they supposed to get the coffins into their rooms unnoticed? But this problem was solved quickly because it was already quite late and the kitchen staff had long been out of the house, so they decided to transport the death boxes across the kitchen and then through the aisle for the staff.
"Finally done," gasped Alfred and collapsed on his coffin.
"We're lucky that nobody saw us," said the count.
" And now?"Herbert asked the group." What do we do now? It's still way too early to climb into the coffin. "
Ragna, who was standing around the room with Sarah, sniffed one of the large potted plants in the room. Without further ado, she yelped at her master and tugged on his pant leg, so much that Alfred almost slipped it down.
"Well, I have a job now, Ragna has to go out."
"I'll come with you," said Herbert and Sarah at the same time, grabbed Alfred by the arm and stormed out with him.
"Children," said the count, and made himself comfortable in the leather armchair.
The three vampires and the she-wolf strolled along the streets and were examined with a certain amount of curiosity and fear by every passerby they passed.
"Apparently we are a big attraction," said Herbert, who looked at some people on the other side of the Starasse, they stared at the visitors as if they were from another planet. "I think we should charge entry if this continues.""People always look like that when someone is new in town," explained Alfred.
"Do you have any friends here?" Sarah asked curiously.
"Oh," said Alfred, thinking back to the time he was new at university. At that time he had at least 1-2 friends, but they had written him off when they heard that Professor Abronsius was shunned and mocked among his colleagues and that Alfred was his student - to be precise, the only one who had stayed with him - they said probably that the young scientist would soon go crazy too. Alfred sighed and hung his head.
"Did I say something wrong?" Sarah asked worriedly at the sight of Alfred, who seemed to have shrunk by a few inches.
"No no. It's not your fault that I have no friends and that everyone avoids me."
"Now you are exaggerating," interfered Herbert. "How can you say you have no friends and everyone is avoiding you?"
"Well, I ..." Alfred started to speak, but Herbert interrupted this plan."Are we not your friends and are we with you all the time?" Herbert looked at him with an encouraging smile and Sarah did the same.
"I always thought that it was only you because I was one of you too."
"Alfred Alfred Alfred," Herbert Freundlich put an arm around the young vampire.
"Of
