Chapter 1: Not Alone

It was a cold February morning and a thick fog lay over the city when Josch climbed the 73 stone steps to the east entrance of the city cemetery. He went through the big old-fashioned ornate steel gate, painted black, down the main corridor. Right and left lined up grave to grave, only separated from time to time by branching corridors, in which grave to grave again lined up and so on. After a while he turned left into one of these branching paths, then stopped. He turned left towards a grave.
He stared silently at the tombstone that was on it. "Rene Hust, 02/22/1983 - 02/22/1996" was carved into the stone.
After several seconds of immobility, he leaned down briefly to place a large sunflower that he had brought with him on the neatly made grave. He closed his eyes and folded his hands in prayer with his head bowed."I thought so," broke a girl's voice, immediately behind him, the silent one.
Josch opened his eyes, "What do you want here" he countered her without turning around. He knew who that voice belonged to anyway. It was Nicki from his class who had followed him.
"I've been wondering for a long time why I don't see you on the way to school every 22nd of the month," "Let me alone!"
She took a few steps towards him. "Yes, yes, now the cool games again, but the trick doesn't work for me ... where is the Josch I grew up with, with whom I could talk about everything, who could talk to me about everything. Damn it." Her voice sounded dejected. "You were once my best friend, but since she died ..." A few seconds passed without either of them speaking another word.
"... it hurts so much ...", Josch finally crawled a little abruptly over his lips. "Yes, I understand that, too, but the incident was almost three years ago.Honor your sister in all, but you have to finally let go. You shouldn't forget them completely. "Despair could be felt in her voice. It wasn't the first time she tried to convince him. Josch sighed wistfully." How should I do that? Every 22nd I come here and every 22nd I say my prayer for my sister at this grave, although I know for sure that my sister is not down there "Now it was Nicki who sighed" Yeah, I heard her body should be completely burned in the car, a ... "Josch turned to her." No ... "thick tears ran down his cheeks." You don't understand. I come here every month, although I know that Rene is still alive. I can't explain it, I just know ... "
He looked at Nicki with desperate, big, wet eyes who for a moment didn’t really know what to make of it. After a few seconds she thought about it and took him in her arms.Sobbing, Josch laid his head on her shoulder. His tears soaked her coat, but she didn't care.
How he had missed her closeness. She hugged him "Please come back," she whispered in his ear.
After a while Josch calmed down again. Nicki broke away from the hug and took off her backpack to rummage around in it. "I actually didn't want to give it to you until tomorrow on your birthday, but since we're leaving for Scotland tomorrow, I thought you would come here today ... here, for you." She held him in red velvet bound book. On the front was a brass-colored clasp with a small lock on it. "This is a diary. I thought if you bring your monthly little memorial service forward a day, then you should get your birthday present today." She smiled at him and he took it in his hand. "Thank you ..." he said a little hesitantly. Nicki grinned at him, but then she froze. It was unbelievable, she hadn't seen anything like this on Joschuar Hust's face in ages. He smiled, after almost three years she saw him smile again for the first time, well it was only a slight smile, but a smile remains a smile.
