This is a one-shot, a self-contained story. I wrote it when I was in a very gloomy mood, the kind reader will probably understand this too. So then...

Ataru Moroboshi stood on the rock and looked down into the valley.
"That stupid school trip. To the mountains - pah!"
He sat down and closed his eyes.
"... and what will happen? Something strange is going to happen and I will be to blame for everything!"
He tensed up in memory of what they'd done to him the last time.
Lum, Shinobu and the others ...
Ataru shuddered and he thought of the blows, kicks and lightning he had received.
He knew that it was his own fault for many things. His girl hunt had got him into trouble more than once, but over time, they had moved on to blame him for everything that happened.Not a day went by without something terrible.
* My body can withstand more than that of a normal person *, he thought proudly, * but in the long run it will destroy me. Why can't you ... just leave me alone? *
A tear ran down his cheek.
* If people could see me now, Moroboshi, the womanizer, the lusty pig, the pervert ...
He cries! *
The young man gave a bitter laugh.
* I don't want anymore, I've had enough! *
Ataru sobbed and curled up in a ball.
* Just stay there. Do nothing....*

Lum was angry.
"Where is he now again! I'm sure he's after some girl again. Why can't he just leave it?"
She flew in tight search loops and looked around.
There, it was.
"What has he?"
Lum flew slowly closer and paused.
She looked at the rolled-up piece of misery.
"Darling, what have you got?"
He sobbed and Ataru looked at her from tear-veiled eyes."Lum, what are you doing here?"
He turned away.
"Please ... leave me alone! Go!"
The Oni girl froze.
"Darling?"
Ataru's body spasmed.
"Go away! Please!" he pleaded.
Lum landed on the ground.
"What do you have? Are you missing something?"
Ataru didn't answer her.
She looked at him seriously.
"I'll stay here until you tell me what you have. No matter how long it takes!"
She continued more gently: "If you want to talk to me ..."
Lum broke off and waited.
She felt a tear run down her cheek herself.
* I'll wait ... * she thought sadly.

Some time later, Ataru looked up and saw that Lum was actually still sitting near him.
She kept her eyes closed, her expression somewhere between worried and sorrowful.
* She is beautiful ... How can you be like this and yet ... *
Words lacked him, but he remembered how often she, like a fury, fell on him and injured him.The young man wiped the tears from his eyes.
"Lum."
She opened her eyes and looked at him.
"Lum, I ..." he broke off.
"Sh ... don't say anything! You don't have to tell me anything if you don't want to. It wasn't fair to try to make you do it."
The Oni girl looked down.
"I am sorry!"
Ataru swallowed.
"Don't, it's okay, stop torturing yourself!"
He looked at her seriously.
"Do you ... still want to know what about me?"
She returned his gaze.
"Yes - yes, you are important to me. Tell me what's going on."
He nodded, then got up and began to free his torso.
Ataru carelessly dropped his jacket and shirt. Lum gasped and backed away as she looked in horror at the battered body of the young man.
His whole torso appeared to be a single wound. Scars, scrapes, and bruises almost covered him.
"What happened ... to you? Ataru ...?"
The Oni girl was trembling all over."You happened," he replied simply, "You, Shinobu, Mendou and all the others. Do you think the ... punishments and beatings would have left no traces? In the beginning I could cope with that even more easily ...", Ataru closed his eyes for a moment and then continued: "... but at some point the whole thing got out of hand. The blows and other things happened too often for me to process them. There were days when I could barely get up . The pain, I can mostly suppress it, but not always ... "
Lum was shocked.
"That ... can't ..."
She got up and walked slowly towards Ataru.
He opened his eyes and backed away.
The Oni girl saw the fear in his eyes.
"Darling, ... Ataru ... I won't hurt you. Believe me."
He started shaking as she stepped closer and hugged him.
His body went limp and he surrendered to the embrace. She felt a shiver go through his body and he began to hold her tighter."I won't hurt you ... never again."
Lum continued to talk to him.
"I love you. I never meant ..."
Ataru sighed.
"I know. But it happened. Lum, I love you too ... and that's why I can forgive you, but the others ...?"
She opened her eyes and began to cry.
* All this time he had never said *, it flashed through her mind.
Both looked at each other without moving.
Before either of them could say anything, they heard a murmur of voices approaching from afar: “Where are you?” “That bastard!” “What has he done with Lum?” “Moroboshi!” “Find her ...!”
Ataru froze and Lum saw the horror and fear in his eyes.
She spoke to him gently.
"Darling, you don't have to worry, nothing will happen to you, I won't let that happen."
Ataru whispered in a low, barely audible voice: "Lum, they will find us. They always do. And then they will hurt me again. I can no longer ..."
The Oni girl released Ataru and reached into the pocket of her school clothes.When she pulled her hand out again, she held the remote control of her UFO.
"Darling do you trust me?"
First he looked at the remote control and then into her eyes.
"Yes," he replied simply.
She sent the call signal and put the remote control away. Lum started smiling and Ataru shyly replied.
Then she took him back in her arms and pressed against him.
He could only whisper a hoarse "thank you".
Lum felt how he put his arms around her too.
"Let's go to where no one can harm you anymore."
With these words, they slowly lifted off the ground, firmly embraced in a loving embrace, away from the voices and the approaching crowd.
When Shinobu, Megane, and the others got to the clearing, nothing of them was left to be seen.
