Chapter: The moon princess

When the sun rises, the moon fades. It only comes back when the sun's rays give way to darkness.

Once upon a time there lived a princess who was the daughter of a powerful ruler. She had no siblings and would one day inherit her father's magnificent empire. But she was a strange child. Because she slept during the day when the sun was shining over the earth and only woke up when the evening reddened the sky.

Her father tried in vain by all means to change her unusual behavior, but the princess was not influenced. She liked to dress in dark, floating robes, which further emphasized her paleness. Whenever the whole palace was asleep, she wandered alone through the beautiful gardens, while the moonlight shone on her beautiful face.

Those who could not fall asleep at midnight sometimes heard her tender, quiet singing, which was infinitely gentle but also sad at the same time. She must have felt quite lonely and lost as she was destined for this golden cage life.No one could keep her company except for her servants, who were not really interlocutors.

Time passed and the princess was 16 years old. One should look for a suitable man for her early enough who was also able to support her in government affairs. Courageous and greedy applicants came from all over the world who greatly appreciated the great personal advantage that would result from this marriage. In the evening a big celebration was held so that the princess could get an idea of her admirers. The princess came in a dark blue long silk dress highlighted with white diamonds and silver jewelry. She let her long, black hair fall flowing down her back. She wore a silver diamond crown on her head. Her large, dark eyes didn't reveal anything she might be thinking at the moment.

She danced with some of the many applicants, as courtesy dictated.Light and fragile like a fairy, she moved in dance, hovered over the ground, but her light was cold and inaccessible. Some suitors sensed the weirdness about her and, plagued by fear, left the magnificent palace that same night. Some others, who would sell their souls for money, stayed and paid her compliments that did nothing for her.

Among the crowd was a young, wise prince who enjoyed excellent training in both reading and sword techniques. He was always a restless spirit and believed he had found his peace when he saw the cool princess. During the first dance with her, he said how much he liked her and asked her to accept him. But the princess showed little reaction and soon danced by the side of someone else.

Late that night, the prince heard someone sing softly and found the ghostly princess alone in the garden, shrouded in the moonlight. He hurried over to her and tried to bring her under his power, but the princess disappeared at a small side door, leaving only a black veil with silver thread that got stuck on a branch.
The prince took the veil and discovered a strange scent in it that he could not let go of. He had to get the moon princess, even if he would pay for it with his life.

A year passed and the princess still did not have the right husband. Her father gave her the last ultimatum: she had to wear the wedding dress within a year, otherwise he would marry her off as he pleased. Her father had always been generous to her, but this time he meant business.

Then this educated prince showed up, probably the best choice among all the others, asked again for the princess' hand, and she agreed. In a dazzling white wedding dress, the pale princess entered the church with her fiancé and came out with a wedding ring on her finger, a husband by her side, and a sacred marriage vows hovering over her head. The prince now got the princess and was looking forward to his apparent happiness.

It was not long before the princess, who wandered around at night, fell seriously ill. With deep, dark circles under her eyes, she lay in her silver four-poster bed with dark blue bedding made of the finest satin. The prince brought many well-known doctors from all over the world, but no one could find out what the princess was suffering from. One day she asked to go into the brightly lit garden when the moon was full. Although her husband protested against it, she insisted. The illness made her look even more fragile, in the moonlight you almost thought you could see through her body. Then she asked to be left alone and asked her companion for understanding.

When the bell rang again and the princess did not return as promised, the prince was frightened. He searched the garden and found nothing of the princess. The garden door was open, the path led into the thick forest. The prince quickly called the guards and together they walked towards the dark shadows.

They called and searched for a long time until the sun rose, including the days and nights that followed, but the forest was large. Nobody had seen the princess again. The prince remained lonely for a while, but eventually made peace with his life and married a cousin of the princess who had nothing in common with the disappeared other than the color of her eyes and hair.

Many millennia later, when the splendid empire had long since fallen into disrepair, a research group discovered a bog body in the inaccessible depths of the old forest. She was dressed in black silk and wore beautiful silver jewelry. Her long, dark hair and deep-set, large eyes, despite the relentless deformation of time, suggested her once delicate and proud features.

Was it murder or suicide? Or was she accidentally caught in the seductive clutches of the swamp on a moonless night, where she was to rest forever?Scientists racked their brains over it. An older man of theirs who has always been interested in ancient mystical stories said:

"Perhaps it was intended as a sacrifice to the moon god."

So the mysterious find in the forest of the moon was never properly cleared up. The forest got its name because the ancient myths said that the beings of the night should dwell in it.
