Chapter: The colored family
At the beginning of the 20th century there was a poor family. They were often discriminated against because they were colored.
They lived on the outskirts of the big city. Her apartment was in inhuman conditions, the water was contaminated, the windows smashed and the door broken. They didn't have the money to fix the door. They were very sad. Nobody wanted to hire them, so they remained unemployed. Sometimes they got food from people who took pity on them. They had a lot to suffer and wanted nothing more than to be finally accepted, but this wish would never come true, they surely knew that.
One day they got very bad news. Since the apartment in which they lived was unoccupied, apart from them, it was to be demolished. They were really worried now, but they had feared that for a long time. They knew that one day that day would come when they would lose their apartment too.
Lukas came to his mother, who was sitting on the floor in the kitchen and crying. He sat down next to her and said: "Mom, I'm hungry!" She looked at him. Sobbing, she replied: "Yes, my darling, I know. We are all hungry!"
She got up and took him back to his room. They had no beds there. They slept on blankets given to them by humans. Lukas had three brothers: Rauhl, John and Eduard. The smallest of them was Eduard, they called him Edu. The woman put her son in bed. She kissed his forehead, and then kissed the other three too. She crept slowly out of the room, Lukas had already fallen asleep and she didn't want to wake any of them. She closed the door behind her and fell sobbing. She didn't want her children to suffer because of the discrimination. She had several sons and daughters, but only four survived.
The children's father finally got home. He had begged all day, even though it was a terrible thunderstorm. Unfortunately he hadn't been able to bring much. With the little money he got, he bought some bread and some fruit. He was soaking wet, the water ran down his body. He began to cough and spat out blood as he did so. The woman noticed that he had pneumonia. She started to cry harder and hugged him. They were both now sitting on the cold floor and crying. They knew their poor little family could be dead in a week. They slowly cried themselves to sleep. The water that ran from the man gathered beneath them, and a large puddle formed. When the woman woke up that morning, the man still seemed to be asleep. She didn't want to wake him up yet and went to the kitchen to get the bread and the fruit.
She whispered to the man: "Wake up, it's morning! You had a difficult day yesterday, now you have to eat something."
She kissed his forehead, but he didn't wake up. The woman noticed that he would never wake up and began to cry. She hugged and kissed him crying, she couldn't believe he was dead. Then the door opened and John came into the room. Seeing his mother crying, he asked, "Mom, what's the matter?"
She looked at him briefly and sobbed: “Nothing darling.” He looked at his father, and asked again: “Mom, what about papa? What's wrong with him?” He ran to the lifeless body of his father. “Papa! Wake up up! Mama, what's wrong? ”His voice began to tremble. His mother suffered greatly to see her husband like this. She suffered an awful lot, and it all happened because of human intolerance.
Then the door opened again and Edu, Rauhl and Lukas came out sleepily. Lukas and Rauhl looked at their father's body in dismay. They didn't know what had happened yet, but they could feel it. They noticed it in the pain of their mother and big brother. Rauhl fell on his knees and began to cry. He couldn't believe his father was dead. Lukas didn't want to believe it. He ran to his father's body and shouted: "Dad! It's unfair! When we were younger you promised us that we would go on a trip somewhere!"It is not fair! How so? You promised us! ... ", he cried and hit his father's body in the chest with his fists. His mother hugged him quickly so that he would stop. She tried to calm him down, but he cried, crying:" It that's not fair! Father! ". The woman whispered to him:" Your papa will protect us now. He will always stand by us from heaven. Just have faith ... He won't let us down. "Lukas asked:" Do you think so? Will we go on a trip one day? I mean ... all of us! You and me and my brothers! Will we? ". She replied, still crying:" I don't know ... ". Edu, who still didn't know what had happened, asked:" Mom, do we have something to eat today? ". The woman remembered the bread and the fruits." Yes ... ", she replied.
She covered the corpse with the blanket she was standing on and sent the boys to the kitchen. Then she kissed the dead man again, and ran into the kitchen too. They were all sitting on the floor. She carefully divided the bread so that they would still have it the next day.The children ate it up quickly. Then John asked: "Mom, why are you not eating?". She looked at him and stroked his head gently. Then she replied: "Oh, I'm not hungry ...". Suddenly the woman heard a loud noise outside. It was a crane. It was supposed to demolish the apartment block. She called to the children: "Quick! Go outside. I'll come after you! Go!". Edu asked: "And what about papa?". She looked at him lovely, and explained: "Papa will follow. So go outside with your brothers quickly! I will come too!". John took his brothers by the hand and ran outside as fast as he could. Edu, however, stayed in the building. He wanted to wait for his mother, and she didn't know that her youngest son was still in the building. She got what little food they had and quickly ran outside to see her sons.
When she was standing outside with her sons, she noticed that Edu was missing. Completely in a panic she asks: "Where is Edu? Why is he not here?". She began to tremble and cry again. Then Lukas called: "He's still in the apartment ...". The woman loses her head. Shaking completely, she runs to the man who was sitting next to the crane. She shouted: "Please don't tear this building down yet! I beg you! My son is still in there!" The man replied: "I'm sorry, but that you lived here all your life without having to pay rent You can't ask anything of me. Believe me, we would do your son a big favor if we let him die. Nobody can live in this poverty. "
The woman saw that he would not help her, so she decided to run in the building herself to save her son. She did that too. She found her son next to his father's body. He sang a song for his father. When he saw his mother, he said, “I wanted dad to listen to the song you taught me!” Edu smiled at her, and then went on singing. The woman ran to her son, took him in her arms and wanted to run outside with him.The crane's wrench struck the walls of the building for the first time, causing them to shake. When John saw that his mother was not returning with his brother, he called to his other two brothers: "You stay here now! I'm going to look for mom!" Roughly follow him without John noticing. But Luke looked after them. He wanted to run after them, but then the tear-off ball struck the walls of the building the second time. Huge pieces of concrete poured down from above. The woman was now imprisoned with her young son. John ran all over the building, calling for his mother. Rauhl ran after him unnoticed. And when the tear-off ball struck the building for the third time, the entrance blocked itself. Now everyone except Lukas was locked up. He had to watch the building collapse onto the heads of his family. He closed his eyes and could hear his mother's voice singing the lullaby she always sang to him and his brothers. In fact, she sang that song.Edu fell asleep with it and the whole building collapsed. They had no more hope. Except for Lukas, they were all dead.
Lukas began to cry, sobbing. Suddenly two men came. They hated colored people. They spat at Lukas and shouted: "You have no business in this world. You just breathe in our air unnecessarily. You don't deserve to live here in our world." One of the men drew a gun and shot Lukas in the head. He died instantly. A tear streamed down his face, then he closed his eyes.
The two men got away with it, and no one ever remembered the poor family.
