A visit to the zoo
Red leaves spun around the crowd on the asphalt. Small children ran from one enclosure to the next, screeching with excitement, their parents hastily following them and barely able to keep up.
He watched this scene with a blank face. Again and again he saw the little faces twisted with laughter. They seemed almost overly distorted to him. But he had to smile slightly at the sight. It was a weak, sad smile. Why should he laugh around so excitedly like these little people? He had no reason.
Big black eyes darted over the crowd. Children happily pointed to them, expected something from them, something special. The parents wanted it for their little ones.
The gray trunk dangled calmly back and forth. The animal lost interest in the crowd. It soon turned away from her. The children wailed in disappointment and their parents tried to give them a reason for this behavior. He didn't care for any of this. It all seemed ridiculous to him. The small crowd kept walking, but he was the only one to stand by the railing and watch those gray, huge floppy ears. The black eyes met his dark ones. The animal ran slowly towards him. He still didn't move when he had the huge trunk less than a meter in front of him. His hand ran lightly over the old animal's rough, gray, wrinkled skin. The wrinkled eyes gave him peace, calm, comfort. That moment was like a healing ointment for his wounded, troubled soul. A smile graced his lips. It seemed to him that his counterpart replied.
The nerve-wracking shrieks of the little ones startled him and the gray giant. The animal quickly turned away. His floppy ears fluttered along its barrel. The whining of the little people could be heard again. One of those children looked up at him. He returned the look with a sad face.He quietly left the crowd behind him. The child's excited eyes bored into his back.
Colorful leaves crackled under his steps.
The wind played with the black hair. He sat down on a bench. A gray sky and bright red trees around him. He liked the red the most.
It reminded him of her.
A narrow, pale face, red hair and deep blue eyes. Suddenly he saw her again, heard her laugh again, her wonderful laugh. She circled with a young man in the sea of brightly colored leaves. The couple looked happy. The man laughed with her and hugged her. Two pairs of eyes looked at each other laughing. She played with his black mane. After a while they went on, smiling, hand in hand.
... That was a year ago ...
He knew the man all too well. Or not anymore.
It was his past.
A croak brought him back. The black bird on the back of the bench looked around. The elegant and beautiful plumage shimmered slightly silver.Thin legs jumped on the seat, seemed to be looking for something. Probably for leftovers. The animal must have been hungry. Black eyes turned to his dark ones. For a while they just looked at each other in silence.
He smiled. A faint jolt went through the bench and black wings rose into the sky. Children looked after them excitedly. He looked at her quietly.
Time passed. It was getting dark and the first lanterns glowed. And he still hadn't left his place. The first shadows danced and the trees lost their beautiful colors. He stood up.
The leaves crackled under his footsteps.
The enclosure from earlier fell into view. He walked slowly towards it and supported himself on the railing. The cold wind made him shiver.
He looked at the floor beside him in silence. Expressionless blue eyes stared at him. There was no more life to be found in them. They were surrounded by red hair. Her lover screamed. Disbelief, despair, sadness could be heard from every scream. His horrified, dark eyes never stopped crying. He buried his face in her dress and sobbed. Like a little boy.
The crowd stood around him, breathless and motionless, staring at the action in silence. They let the killer escape. A bank robber, as it turned out later. On the run. Needed a hostage then. Only this one had resisted.
But why…?
The young man clung to the red coat. Blood smeared on his trembling hands. Your blood, your life ...
That was his past. A year ago.
His gaze met black eyes. A gray trunk dangled back and forth. Floppy ears fluttered with the steps. The old animal looked at him. He gave him a smile. It turned and walked slowly away.
The gray giant had not forgotten all of this. And gave him consolation, gave him rest and peace.
"Thanks."
He turned and walked down the path.
Gray leaves crackled under his steps.END
