The sleepwalker
When nightmares come true
Chapter 1
Mrs. Haruno yawned as she set the plate of scrambled eggs in front of Sakura on the breakfast table. "My goodness, I don't understand. I'm more tired in the morning than in the evening when I go to bed." She was already wearing her white sister's costume. Sakura stared at the slimy egg on her plate and grimaced. “Why do I have to eat scrambled eggs in the morning?” “Looks like you've eaten before,” said Sakura's sister Yuri with the typical frankness of a ten-year-old. "You don't say things like that when you are sitting at the table," rebuked Mrs Haruno. "Not even if it really is."
"But it looks like this," protested Yuri.
"You need a real breakfast," Mrs. Haruno explained to her daughter Sakura and did not go into her little daughter."You're starting your new job this morning. So you need enough energy."
"You mean a little cholesterol to get going. Thank you very much, Sister Kaori," sighed Sakura and finally tackled the egg with the fork.
"Sister Kaori, Sister Kaori," Yuri parroted. For some reason she found the address hilarious.
Mrs. Haruno took a sip of her coffee. "Oh, no. That can't be true." A few splashes of coffee had landed on her white blouse. She ran to the sink to rub the stains out with a wet cloth.
In the meantime, Sakura poured almost a kilo of salt on her egg. At least it tasted better that way. "I can't believe I have to work today," she muttered. "Beautiful summer!"
"Nice summer. Nice summer," repeated Yuri, her mouth full of cornflakes.
"Stop parroting everything I say," said Sakura.
"I still can't believe you even got the job," said Mrs. Haruno and came back to the table."Hey - thank you very much for the good opinion you have of me," Sakura replied.
"No. I don't mean it that way, you know that. I just didn't think Mrs. Uchiha would take you - because of me." Very carefully she took another sip of coffee, but this time held the saucer so that nothing could happen .
"I was on duty with her when she was with us in the hospital last year. Oh, that was a riot that this woman made. And then there was this pain, sister, you already know where!"
"Where?" Asked Yuri and then burst out laughing.
"Mrs. Uchiha couldn't stop complaining about anything in the hospital - or about me. You just couldn't please her. She even had my boss come over to tell him what a bad sister I am and that I am." wants to kill her. Can you imagine that? "
No, Sakura couldn't. She knew how seriously her mother took her job and how hard she worked in the hospital. After her parents divorced and Sakura's father left her, her mother's job had become the most important thing in life, except for Sakura and Yuri, of course.
"And when I then heard that you applied to her for the job, I did not in the least have expected that you would even have a chance," continued her mother and finished her coffee. "But maybe she just didn't realize you were my daughter."
"You mean she's a terrible old hag? Then why did you let me take the job?"
"I'm sure she will be nice to you," her mother explained quickly. Maybe she shouldn't have told Sakura about Mrs. Uchiha's hospital stay. "You said she was friendly when you introduced yourself."
"Yes. She was very cute," admitted Sakura.
"And she pays so generously," added Mrs. Haruno, taking her coffee mug and rinsing it out. "I mean, five dollars an hour just for a little tidying up, preparing food and reading aloud, you can't complain, can you?Come on Sakura, you are damn lucky.
"I think so too," admitted Sakura, while she decided to just let the egg stand. She emptied her glass of orange juice in one gulp.
"And even if it weren't. We need the money, you know that. Your father, wherever he goes, doesn't bring in a penny." A bitter expression crossed Mrs. Haruno's face, making her look older than her thirty-nine years.
"Why can't I have a job?" Yuri wanted to know. Everything around her bowl of corn flakes was covered in milk stains. Sakura had always been orderly and careful, Yuri was exactly the opposite of that, actually in almost everything.
"You have a job," Sakura teased. "To be a good little girl."
"And you're stupid," Yuri replied.
There was a horn on the street. "This is the bus for summer camp", Mrs. Haruno called and ran to the door to give the driver a sign that Yuri would come immediately."Have you packed your bag? Didn't you forget anything?" "No, Mom," said Yuri, took her canvas bag and walked to the door. "I have to go to the hospital now," said Mrs. Haruno, straightening the seams on her stockings. "Are you prepared for your job?"
"Not after what you just told me!" Sakura shouted, drying her hands. "Mrs. Uchiha will probably treat me like a slave. Maybe she'll put me on a chain and make me clean her stove with a toothbrush!"
"You and your wild imagination," said her mother with a sigh. "I should never have told you the whole story. How could I have forgotten what kind of things you always think up and how you always exaggerate everything and make things a lot worse than they actually are."
"Do you really think I'm like that?" Asked Sakura. Mrs. Haruno kissed her on the forehead in reply, picked up her bag, and ran to the door. "Should I take you with me?"
"No thanks.I prefer to run. "
"Mrs. Uchiha lives on Lexington Street, doesn't she? You are really brave this morning."
"Yes, she lives near the lake. But during the day I'm not afraid of Lexington Street," said Sakura. "I mean, what's going to happen?
-------------------------------------------------- -----------
"Oh, my pearls!"
Kumiko, Mrs. Uchiha's black cat, had hit Sakura's necklace with her paw and the pearls were rolling in all directions across the kitchen floor.
"What happened, Sakura?", Mrs. Uchiha asked from the dining room.
"Not that wild," Sakura replied and bent down to pick up the pearls. The cat ran out of the room frightened because Sakura was walking on all fours like her.
Sakura was particularly attached to this chain. Gaara, her new boyfriend, had given it to her the evening before he went on vacation with his family. They were glass beads, as light blue as opals. She had promised him to wear it every day and to think of him every time she looked at her.And now?
"Oh. This chain is broken." Mrs. Uchiha appeared in the door. "Should I help you?"
“No, I think I've already got them all.” Sakura stood up, the pearls firmly in her hand.
"Then at least let me re-thread them for you". Leaning on her cane, Mrs. Uchiha held out a hand that looked surprisingly soft and smooth, not at all like an old woman's (at this point an interim remark: she is not Sasuke's mother, but the aunt). With her smooth skin, dark red lips and coal-black hair, Mrs. Uchiha looked much younger than she really was. Only the stick gave information about their age. Today she looked especially summery and youthful in her floral print skirt and yellow blouse.
"Thanks, that's okay. Really," said Sakura.
"But I insist. I enjoy it. I like threading pearls. Please give them to me. And it is good for my old hands to have a little activity."Without further protest, Sakura gave the pearls to the old woman. Mrs. Uchiha gave her a friendly smile and made her way back to the dining room with the pearls. "Give us some more soup and come over," she called over her shoulder.
-------------------------------------------------- -----------
It was Wednesday afternoon, Sakura's third day with Mrs. Uchiha. To her great relief, the first two days had been very pleasant. Mrs. Uchiha was moody at times and often repeated, but she also complimented Sakura almost continuously. How pretty she was, how lovely her pink hair shone when the sun fell on it, what a pleasant voice she had when she read - even compliments on the simple food she prepared for Mrs. Uchiha.
"But that's just noodle soup and a simple ham and cheese sandwich," Sakura had objected when Mrs. Uchiha had praised the food enthusiastically.
"The simple things are often the best, don't you think?""In any case, it looks like the job would be very pleasant," thought Sakura as she looked out of the kitchen window at the lake, which was almost completely surrounded by green trees. Was there someone swimming in the lake? She screwed up her eyes so she could see better. No. Of course there wasn't. Again just her imagination. She always tried to make things more interesting than they really were!
After dinner, Mrs. Uchiha usually lay down and slept on the couch in the living room while Sakura washed the dishes. The afternoon nap never lasted more than an hour. But during this time Sakura could watch TV or think about Gaara undisturbed or explore the house.
The house was surprisingly modern with black leather and chrome armchairs, a matching couch, and a low plexiglass coffee table. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves lined the walls. Mrs. Uchiha had read a lot and enjoyed reading. Now that reading was tiring her eyes, she liked being read to her.
But what amazed Sakura most was the large collection of odds and ends. It was just everywhere: on the tables, the window sills, on the shelves. Some things were even grouped in extra glass cases that stood between the books.
The old woman had just shaken her head and mumbled, “This is all worthless stuff. Nothing but dust catcher.” When Sakura tried to ask her a little more about it, Mrs. Uchiha had simply changed the subject by saying, “It is now Time for our walk. "
----------------------------------------------
Every afternoon, Sakura and Mrs. Uchiha walked down the lakeshore. Mrs. Uchiha leaned on her cane with one hand, and
