~ Chapter three ~

III.

When Aragorn picked her up in the morning, she was pale and silent and appeared to him as if she had not found sleep in the night. And so he asked, as they stood on the ramparts and gazed into the misty morning over the wide plain, worried: “What worries you, dearest, that you look so unhappy?” Éowyn was silent for a moment and then spoke hesitantly, while she spoke to him looked tenderly and sadly in the eyes: "Believe me, dearest, that this hurts me more than I can say, and yet, I fear it must be done. And I fear there is no way to say it more gently , and so I have to say frankly: You must not bind yourself to me, Aragorn! Let us forget what happened yesterday. "And when he started to interrupt her, she spoke quickly:" Remember, dearest that you will soon be High King of Gondor, and so you need a woman at your side who is worthy of you as a wife for the good of your kingdom. And who better to do this job than Arwen? With what wisdom and dignity she could rule by your side, and what a source of blessing and what a splendor she would be for Gondor, so infinitely more than I could ever be! No, I can't let you bond with me. To know that your heart belonged to me once - I want to be satisfied with that. "
For a moment Aragorn looked at her in silence, while he shook his head in amazement. Then he replied softly: “So you are afraid of the task that awaits you, my brave shieldmaiden?” And a pensive smile began to spread on his face as he continued: “I would never have believed you were fearful once to experience, most noble mistress of Rohan! "
"It is not fear that moves me!" She exclaimed indignantly. And so he became serious again: "I know, beloved, and your reasons honor you beyond measure. But since you have cast my heart so completely under my spell, you will no longer be able to get rid of me.Believe me, Éowyn, you would be the most wonderful queen Gondor ever had, of that I am certain. And would my people be served if his king grieved day after day because he had lost those whom he loved with all his heart and would thereby forget his kingdom and his duties? But by becoming my wife, if you should hopefully hear me, the friendship between our two peoples would also be deepened for the blessing of both kingdoms. "
And he looked into her eyes and whispered: "No, Éowyn, I will not let you!"
Then he kissed them for a long time and did not care that they stood on the ramparts, visible to many, and that many people of Gondor gathered below and looked up at them.
