-The Return ...-
The sun was already setting in all its splendid colors, far away on the horizon. The forest around the small group and the brightly colored leaves in autumn completed a picture that made the entire world no longer appear monotonous and dreary, but rather colorful and happy. And so it was! The last few weeks have been tough, with a lot of fights and mostly just the ground as a bed. But they finally got through it ... the mission was over!
Exhausted and with a few wounds, the four Shinobi sat down on the leaves that had fallen in the light wind. They wouldn't go home today. They would recover a little and continue to Konoha the next day."I'm done!", Naruto muttered, leaning against a tree and sliding down the trunk. A few seconds later he seemed to have fallen asleep. His teammates could only shake their heads, but they too were exhausted and so began to set up camp. Sasuke laid out the stones for a safe fireplace and Sakura decided to get the appropriate wood so that they could make something to eat. Kakashi said he had something important to do, but he sat down on a tree and read his beloved book 'Flirt Paradise'.
When Sasuke finished, Sakura came back and they lit a fire. “And who's going to hunt now?” Their two eyes met briefly and wandered together to the sleeping Naruto. Without further ado, they woke him up and got a grumble, but when he heard the word 'food' he was immediately on fire.
Sakura smiled after the blonde shinobi. "Well, if you can't lure Naruto out with anything ... As soon as it comes to food, nothing can stop him!", then she giggled and began as best she could to prepare four small but slightly softer beds for the night from the withering leaves. Her gaze wandered again and again to the Jounin and she wondered whether he was just lazy or whether he was behind reading his Favorite book even more hidden?
Meanwhile, Naruto tried his luck hunting. He thought about it for a moment and then decided to lie in wait behind a bush and wait for something that was later edible. So he was crouching behind the bush and almost fell asleep when suddenly a rabbit was sitting right in front of the bush. Slowly he straightened up, made a dive and ... landed on his stomach because his leg was caught on a branch.
As fast as its short legs let it hobble, the rabbit crumbled into its burrow. The blonde shinobi swore loudly to himself. "Damn ... shit ... what a shit ... stupid rabbit ... stupid branch ..." He berated everything and everyone except himself and his clumsiness. But then he blinked in confusion. Wasn't there something glittering in the hole where the animal had disappeared? The seal bearer looked again at the evening sun and then into the building. Indeed! Slowly he crept closer and carefully reached inside. "Damn ..." He pulled his hand back out much faster and looked at the bleeding finger before raising an eyebrow in surprise. This wasn't a bite injury that a rabbit might have caused, something had actually cut it. So he reached into the hole again and, above all, much more carefully. He felt something sharp, somehow familiar. Slowly, careful not to cut again, he grabbed it and pulled it out. He turned around so that the sun was shining on it and it was easier to see. “That's a shuriken.” Naruto didn't care and pocketed it. But before he went on hunting, he pulled a plaster from one of his pockets and bandaged his finger with it. "So."This time he sat down on a tree, maybe he had a better view from there. He lay down on his stomach and when a rabbit came up again, he jumped from the trunk with lightning speed and grabbed the little animal. He turned it He put his neck around his neck and was proud. It didn't even occur to him to catch a few more rabbits, since it might be too little for four people. But he just went back to the camp with a cheerful pace.
A short chuckle came from the masked shinobi down to the camp when he saw Naruto and the rabbit approach. It had taken the blonde a long time for just one of these animals, a second would be more filling, so he disappeared in the blink of an eye without anyone noticing.
Sakura sat waiting and wondered how long Naruto would need and how much he would bring with him if he needed that much time. She turned around and when she saw Naruto, she sighed. Surely he wasn't serious !?"Tell me, Naruto, where did you leave our food?" The questioned person blinked in confusion. "Well here," he replied, holding the rabbit up. Now a sigh could be heard from Sasuke as well. “Baka.” Confused, the blonde looked at the dead animal in his hand. “Is there something wrong with that?” His friend, however, just shook his head. “If you want to diet, everything is fine with the rabbit!” The blonde still didn't understand. “What do you have against rabbits?” Sakura looked at him puzzled. "Oh man, Naruto. How many are we?"
"Four."
"And how many rabbits did you catch?"
"One."
There was brief silence until Naruto clicked. But before he could have said anything in his defense, Kakashi was back again. "Naruto and I met in the forest and we both agreed that rabbits also go very well with poultry ... and that a little variety would do us good!" He laughed and held up a turkey. The seal bearer understood immediately and was grateful. He was also embarrassed every now and then when something kept going wrong and it was his fault. He didn't get any further thought, however, because they wanted to start plucking the turkey and peeling off the rabbit's skin.
It was getting late and they were hurrying to do it. When that was done, they impaled the animals and let the meat cook over the fire, which was now blazing.
"Ahh ..." Naruto sighed contentedly and leaned back in his pile of leaves. He was unconsciously playing with the shuriken in his pocket. "I'm looking forward to my real bed when we get back to Konoha!"
Now he wanted to take her food from the fire when Sasuke said: "Better let me do that, you will burn yourself later." Not being told something like that from a teammate, the seal bearer ignored him and demonstratively grabbed the skewers from the fire. Then he grinned teasingly at the Uchiha, who looked a bit acidic, but didn't show anything else. Then Naruto gave each of them some of the meat and after eating they decided to rest and go to sleep for the onward journey.
The morning was already breaking and Kakashi was shaking everyone to get his team awake. "It's time, we should leave! If the weather stays like this, we'll be home by evening ..."
Naruto rubbed his eyes wearily. Not only had he slept badly, but strange nightmares had plagued him. "Oh yes ... I'm already awake! What's for breakfast?" The black-haired man was woken up in amusement, because this question made him laugh before he opened his eyes.
Annoyed now the young woman sat up. "What are you doing there?", Such a cheerfulness in the early morning, has seldom emanated from the team present recently.
"Yes, we still have something from last night, if you want breakfast ..." Kakashi held out a leg of rabbit to the blond, which he gratefully accepted and immediately began to eat.Sasuke looked at the blonde. He was hungry too, but as his friend was eating the last of the leftovers, he said nothing. A strange feeling crept into Naruto as he nibbled on the club. Then he looked at the young Uchiha. "Eating alone is boring ... Take it!", He handed him the last of the turkey breast and smiled. He didn't offer anything to Kakashi and Sakura, as these two were already chewing on other food on the way. The person addressed looked at him in silence at first, took the piece of turkey breast and then mumbled a barely understandable "thank you".
Admittedly not full, but satisfied because the feeling had also subsided, the seal bearer began to pack up the camp after the meal. He was surprised to find that he had the throwing star he had found in his hand while he was sleeping, because he found it on his makeshift bed. Shaking his head, he just put it back in his pocket. As was to be expected, Kakashi also packed his stuff in no time at all. They were just waiting for their friends now. The pink-haired and the Uchiha also got ready to leave and packed their things. When they were done, it could finally start.
The hours ran ... The sun rose higher and higher ... The forest became a field ... And the field became a heavily overgrown forest again. The day was lengthy and for the most part there was silence. The team and their teacher went back ... back home ... where they hadn't been in over three weeks because their past assignment just didn't want to end.
Again and again Naruto found himself reaching for the cool metal of the shuriken and when he noticed this he shook his head and put it away again. Just because he had found it, he didn't need to feel all the time to know that he had it.
Then finally, the Jounin took another straight and quick step to the day. Konoha was in sight.Unconsciously, they all quickened their pace. Sakura was happy to be home soon, with her family, three weeks was a long time. Sasuke was also finally happy to be back in Konoha, even if he wouldn't admit it. He had no real family any more, but the knowledge that he was at home in this village gave the black-haired man a deep satisfaction.
