The funeral took place on a clear autumn day and Narcissa really tried everything to stay strong. She couldn't and didn't want to collapse here, not in front of all these people. Mute tears ran down her cheeks and she squeezed Draco's hand lightly. Her son was standing next to her and had bowed his head. She knew that he wanted to hide his tears by doing this and she tacitly accepted it. Lucius' death had hit them both hard and even now she just couldn't really understand it.
She dismissed all condolences with a nod, not trusting her voice as she continued to follow the funeral. She didn't want to be here, didn't want to see that. But she knew it wouldn't be any less real if she wasn't here.

Her innermost part screamed and raged at the thought that Lucius would never come back to her, that he would never hug her again, laugh or cry with her. He was just gone. And he had left her behind. She knew that she couldn't blame him and yet she wished for almost nothing more than to be able to turn her irrepressible grief into anger, but it couldn't. The grief and despair had lodged deep in every fiber of her body, leaving her weak and helpless. Every night she woke up crying, reaching next to her only to be greeted by emptiness.
Narcissa didn't remember how many tears she had shed already, but she just couldn't stop them.

Exhaling, trembling, she looked at her husband's grave and remembered how she had learned of his death.

[i]Lucius had got a new assignment and had therefore not been home for several days, something Narcissa knew. She had made every effort the day he was due to come back. A nice meal, everything nicely arranged and she herself had put on her most beautiful dress and made herself right for him. But Lucius did not come. She had slowly started to get nervous when Severus Snape walked into the room and looked at her with a mixture of pity and sadness. The only thing he said was a quiet "I'm sorry, Cissa" before turning his gaze to the floor, unable to keep up with the shocked expression on her face. "No ... no ... that ... that can't be" she gasped softly and propped herself up on the chair she was standing on. "He ... he can't be dead, tell me it's not true," she pleaded softly, but Severus just looked down at the floor and was silent. The painful scream that then left her throat echoed through the entire Malfoy estate.
Sobbing, Narcissa collapsed next to the set table before she - seized by desperate anger - began to hurl everything she could grasp against the wall. But that didn't help her either. It only made her sadness and despair even greater and a short time later she sank to the ground again, gripped by a violent crying fit. Her entire world seemed to have collapsed all of a sudden. She had loved Lucius more than anything else in the world and now he should just be gone.
She didn't even look up when a couple of arms wrapped around her and rocked her back and forth, but just clung to the person in front of her and let her grief run free.

Since that day she had struggled to keep her life under control and it was visibly difficult for her. But she knew that Lucius would have wanted her to be strong for her son. And so she tried. It wasn't easy and Narcissa knew that it would take her a long time to come to terms with this loss, but she had to try. For Draco and for Lucius.

She startled slightly when a hand came to rest on her shoulder and looked up, straight into Severus' worried face.Only now did she notice that the other guests had apparently all left and that she, Draco and Severus were the only people left. She looked down at the grave once more, a sad smile on her face, before turning and leaving the grave with Severus and Draco. She knew she would never be able to forget Lucius, but she was sure that he would always be with her and that they would meet again when the time came.
