Chapter 1

The time had come, the day she had feared most had come. The young baroness looked out the window with bowed head. It was already evening and now and then the moon shone through a thick cloud cover.

Tomorrow was her eighteenth birthday. With a fearful look she looked at what was close.
The young woman was torn from her thoughts when there was a knock on the door.
One of her maids entered.
"Madame, your mother wishes to speak to you"
The baroness turned to her completely and nodded.
"Tell her I'll join her in a moment"
The maid curtsies and disappeared through the door again.

Relieved, she took another breath and looked briefly into the garden before setting off to her mother. She was already waiting impatiently for her daughter in the drawing room. When the old baroness saw her child, her expression brightened significantly.
"There you are at last Hitomi, child let me look at you"
Hitomi hated it when her mother spoke to her like that. She was clearly no longer a child. Her fine, graceful face and slim figure made this young girl break many hearts of young men despite her young age.
"Well, mother, what is your concern that you still call me to you at such a late hour"
She looked at her mother expectantly, even though she knew what it was about. The old Baroness Liane tapped her hand next to her to ask her daughter to sit down.
"My dear child, you will surely be able to guess what this is about"
She looked disgruntled in the face of the young noblewoman who just looked at her blankly.
"You mean the promise we made to father"
"Yes, you are right," Liane continued. "As you know we made him, or rather you made a promise on his deathbed"The baroness took a deep breath before continuing.
"Due to an unfortunate event, as you surely know, your father got into debt"
Hitomi interrupted her mother furiously.
"Yes, he is in debt and I can atone for him years later"
"Child, what are you talking about, we owe it to your father that we still have everything here!"

She looked at her daughter, completely perplexed.
"I know how difficult it must be for you, but if the King of Farnelia hadn't helped us back then, we wouldn't have all this anymore"
Her daughter looked up at her defiantly. Tears blinked furiously in her eyes.
"I would love to do without that as having to marry someone completely new to me!"
Hitomi then burst into tears.
"Dear, I understand you yes"
Again she was interrupted.
"What do you know about it, mother, you didn't have to marry a complete stranger who is also the king of this country"
The old baroness looked pityingly at her counterpart."But Hitomi understand, besides our title we only own this old property, if you don't marry a man with a fortune we are facing the end"
Now it was the mother who sat in front of her daughter in a state of dismay. There was an embarrassed silence, which was only disturbed by sobs on both sides.
"Mother, there is one thing I don't understand why this promise of marriage to the old king"
Liane looked at her daughter with sympathy.
"Hitomi, your father had no other choice, after all we didn't have what we could offer him anymore"
The baroness gently stroked her head.
"You understand, he had no choice, forgive your father"
Hitomi took a deep breath and looked her mother in the face.
"And who knows, maybe you like him the young king"
The two women embraced each other lovingly and smiled at each other.
"You are right mother, but say the king is expecting me at all"
Liane looked up at her daughter, relieved."Don't worry, I received a letter in which everything was settled, tomorrow a carriage will pick you up and drive you to the castle"
After this conversation the two women went to bed. Whereby Hitomi fell into a dreamless sleep after a long time.

The next morning the sun shone brightly through the open window of the young baroness. She stretched herself in bed and blinked her eyes. She looked forward to this day full of energy and only looked out of the window wearing a nightgown.

For the last time, she thought wistfully to herself. For a long time she stared out at the green garden that stretched to the adjacent forest. How would she miss all of this here. In the house she was born in, in which she grew up. But it didn't help, she had to keep the promise her father made to the old king.

Inwardly, after his death, she had hoped to have broken this agreement. But she was wrong, the young prince who was now the new king had not forgotten this. How can he be where?
Hitomi never had the opportunity to meet him, let alone talk to him. The whole wedding was arranged by the fathers. Would she get along with him at all?
Inwardly she hoped for a miracle that it was all just a bad dream. But no, she was brought back down to earth when one of her maids entered the room.
"Madame, your mother asked me to help you get dressed, the carriage will arrive soon"
She looked a little helplessly into the face of her servant.
"Must be, I was hoping to stand a little longer at the window and look at the wonderful garden"
Somewhat reluctantly, she let help with getting dressed. When Hitomi was done, she entered the dining room where her mother was waiting for her. She smiled up at her.
"Good morning, dear, happy birthday"
Unsure what Hitomi should answer, she looked at her mother. Certainly it was her birthday today, but she wasn't sure whether she could be happy. As of today, a completely new life began for Hitomi, not only as a future wife, but also as a future queen.
She smiled back cautiously.
"I thank you mother"
Without further words, the young woman immediately sat down at the table and ate breakfast. The two women sat opposite each other in silence. It was, of course, the custom not to speak at table, but you could feel the discomfort of both women.

After dinner, Hitomi stepped out into the garden. The mother finally followed her some distance away.
"Hitomi please don't be so sad on a day like today"
Sighing, the addressed turned around.
"Oh mother, how am I supposed to be happy when I soon meet my husband, who is completely strange to me"
The older woman looked sympathetically at the young being in front of her.
"I understand you, but you will get through it, believe me"
Liane put her arms around her encouragingly. Just as Hitomi was about to reply, a carriage pulled up in the courtyard.Hitomi looked down, startled. Now the time had come. A servant got out and moved towards the entrance of the house.
"Well Hitomi, then we will go and say hello to the gentlemen"

Reluctantly, Hitomi followed her mother and watched them load their suitcases. Now a new phase of life would begin for her.
