The sun had already set when I returned from work in the field. I was hungry and tired. Delicate veils of fog enveloped the village and the silence was almost eerie.
I walked a little faster and forced myself not to keep looking over my shoulder because I didn't want to look scared.
Shortly afterwards I reached the house, my mother was already standing impatiently in the door and waiting for me. "Claire," she began to speak as soon as I entered the house, "well, your father and I, we have decided that you are slowly getting old enough to get married," my mother said with a sugary smile on her face.I stared at her in disbelief, but mother ignored my reaction and pushed me into the dining room, where my father and brothers were already eating.
At least it would take some time before someone wooed me, I tried to console myself, but my father shattered this hope too, because he said: "Lodwig's son Merten asked for your hand today."
When he saw the horrified expression on my face, he went on in a tone that brooked no argument, "You should consider yourself lucky, Merten belongs to the wealthiest family in the village."
I gasped for air. Should I marry this guy? I opened my mouth to protest, but my brother shook his head and I closed it again.
"It is decided that you will marry him," he said. Tears came to my eyes, how could my parents be so cruel ?! I ran up to her room tossed myself on her bed and cried. I would never marry this monster!I would rather die! When my mom went upstairs to check on me, I just pretended to be asleep.
I got up in the middle of the night, I had made up my mind. I crept quietly down the stairs, it creaked softly, but I was sure that no one had woken up.
I went down to the kitchen and took a loaf of bread, then looked for another knife. I crept out quietly and a cold wind hit me immediately and blew my long, blond hair into my face.
It was almost completely dark, the sky was full of clouds so that even the moon hardly gave off any light.
Slowly I walked towards the forest, I didn't know where I was going, I just wanted to get away, away from my parents, who were so cruel to become engaged to Merten and above all away from himself.
In the distance a wolf howled. I winced when a branch broke under my feet. Only now did I realize that I was running away from home, without money, without warm clothes, I couldn't wander around for years, after all, there were wild animals, wolves, bears ...But it really didn't matter, I'd rather freeze to death or let wolves tear me apart than marry Merten. With a grim expression I trudged through the forest, running without stopping, morning was already dawning, but I ran on and on from my home village.
Shortly after sunrise I left the forest behind me and was now walking along a large meadow, I was exhausted and so I had to rest for a while.
I was already further from my house than ever before. After about an hour I got up again and kept walking. I wondered what my parents were doing, if they were worried or if they thought I would return, or if they were even looking for me?
I kept running, just following my nose, I wondered when I would meet the next village because, like most of the people in my village, I had never been far from home.
I ate some of my bread and after a while, a few hours had certainly passed because it was already dawn, I went to sleep.I got up before dawn the next day and kept walking as fast as I could without getting tired too quickly.
This went on for a few days, after about a week I saw smoke rising in the distance.
I was happy, I sure could spend the night there somewhere. But only a few moments later I saw the flames. Horsemen with torches rode through the village and set fire to the huts.
Suddenly I was grabbed by the shoulders and dragged into the shade of a small group of trees.
I wanted to scream but someone put his hand over my mouth. I reached for her knife, but before I could take it the stranger had already thrown it to the ground.
