Orrick paced up and down the rows between the struggling students.
"Right, left, right, well defended, evade. Hey! Avoid !!! You hear badly !?"
He went to one of his students who carefully felt a fresh wound on his cheek. He slapped away his hand indignantly and looked at the cut.
"It's not deep so don't worry."
The boy looked at his teacher in disbelief.
"Oh, come on, don't you start crying. Go to the hospital room, get a plaster and then it's on."
At that moment the big tower clock struck for lunch.
"Or not"
He watched as his students strolled back into the castle in groups, then he cleared away leftover practice swords and pieces of wood splintered from shields.
"Don't you think you're taking them a little too hard?"Orrick looked up at the roof of the shed.
"Do you have to hang around up there all the time?"
"Well I have a lot of free time"
Smiling, Alvar jumped down, stepped aside, and helped him pour.
"You still haven't answered my question."
Orrick sighed.
"No, I don't think so. They are still children, but in a few years they will fight in the war. Before that, I want to teach them as much as possible."
"So you've heard of it too?"
"You mean the thing with Deneuve?"
Alvar nodded
"I picked it up by chance. I really thought he would come to his senses again. You can be wrong like that."
He closed the door, gave Alvar a quick nod, and followed his students into the castle for lunch.

Saenna closed the door behind her and let herself fall on the bed, buried her face in the silky soft pillows and thought. A war seemed to be inevitable. In that case, they would all have to fight. She gently stroked her arm, where the snake mark was in her skin. She could control her demons well enough to fight them, but that wasn't enough for her.
Slowly the girl rolled onto her back and looked at her room until her gaze fell on one of the swords. She had never really noticed it. She had always seen it as a decoration, but never as a deadly weapon. Her hand slipped over the handle of one, then the blonde grabbed it and jerked it out of its holder, losing her balance and tipping backwards. The sword flew out of her hand and split an Indian vase on her left.

For a moment of shock, Saenna lay motionless, then she got up, pulled the sword out of the potting soil and yanked it up again. This time she aimed at her closet, ran towards him, missed him, the blade slid along the side wall of her desk and she pierced a chocolate pudding that had been lying in her school bag from yesterday. To her astonishment, it spread out in her pocket at immense speed, dirty exercise books and finally found a way through the hole that had just been made onto the freshly cleaned stone tiles.A low giggle startled her. The girl turned to see Orrick leaning in the doorway. He winked at her and her cheeks glowed red in the face of this embarrassing situation.
"You had a hot fight," his eyes darted over the shattered vase and the flowers on the floor, over the small trickle of pudding next to her backpack and got stuck on her again, "well ... did you win?"
A small, shy smile crossed her lips. Of course she knew who she was looking at.
"Um, well, well. It wasn't planned that way." She looked at the floor. She blushed again.
"Isn't it enough for you to have two demons under control? Do you want to learn sword fighting now?" He didn't look angry, more amused in view of the demolished room and the girl's shyness.
She looked up at him with a face she hoped reflected remorse.
Orrick giggled again.
"You don't even have to pretend you're sorry. If you want to fight with the sword then come. "
He looked at her "you want to ?!"
Saenna nodded.

The blonde had never been in the practice room before. There were all kinds of dumbbells and dirty, sweaty towels in the corners, punching bags were hanging from the ceiling and there was a pungent odor of urine in the air.
She wrinkled her nose in disgust.
"Well, if that bothers you, we shouldn't even start," he smiled crookedly at her.
"But!" burst out of her and she immediately blushed again when she realized how loud she had said it.
"Well at least you have willpower."
He went over to the closet, took out two katana, and tossed one to her. She just managed to catch the gun before it reached her shoe and surely pierced it.
"The most important thing for the beginning is that you stand loosely and distribute your weight evenly on both legs. This way you have a secure stand and cannot be knocked over so easily."He showed her how. After a while she got better and managed to parry Orrick's blows.
"Very good," he praised, "I think we should end that for today."
"Can we please again?"
"Don't get too cocky now."
"Oh just one more time, please."
He sighed and nodded, "go ahead."
All her blows were fought off by Orrick and she slowly drifted back and closer to the wall. To startle her, the boy suddenly leapt forward. Saenna stumbled, lost her balance, fell back and banged her head against the wall.
The blonde immediately knelt down to her, "Saenna? Hey!" he patted her lightly on the cheek but Saenna was already passed out.

// She was sitting in a draughty wooden hut on the outskirts of a small village. The soft grass tickled her legs with every breeze, but she hardly noticed it. She just sat there and waited, waiting for the sun to finally rise. The girl was constantly watching the sky through a hole in the wood. At the first rays of sun she got up and went down to the market. If she hurried it wouldn't take 10 minutes and she would be there.
The women were still setting up the market stalls. Perfect. It couldn't have gone better. Saenna caught the right moment and then strolled around the market as inconspicuously as possible. When a woman turned and stooped to take something from a wooden box, she grabbed up and stuffed as many apples into her pocket as possible. She picked up the rest of them. She was about to run away when a strong hand grabbed her shoulder and held her tight.
The blonde turned around in horror. Two tall, muscular men stood behind her.
"Where are you going with that little thief?"
In a panic, she tossed a few apples at them and ran away.
It didn't get much further than the next street corner."So, now let's talk plainly. What's your name?"
"Saenna"
"And how else?"
The girl shrugged.
"How old are you?"
She did some math on her fingers.
"Seven"
"Where are you from?"
No Answer. The girl only looked embarrassed at the floor.
"Where are you from, I want to know!?!"
"Is there a problem, monsieur?"
A castle guard had appeared next to Saenna.
"Uh ..." the man stuttered. He was quite angry, but he didn't want even the smallest girl to approach the brutal security guards about a few stolen apples.
He shook his head but the newcomer seemed to have understood that too.
"Stolen apples so, so."
He took the girl by the collar and dragged her further and further towards the castle.
"Saenna?" someone called her "Saenna? Hey can you hear me?" //
She opened her eyes carefully. An excited Orrick knelt beside her.
"Saenna thank God you are fine".
She sat up. Someone had carried her to bed and put pajamas on her.But not about ...
"You seem to be doing better. You should take a little rest. Sleep well."
With these words he stroked her head briefly and quietly closed the door.
