Chapter: prolog
Kaitou Kid was running towards his misfortune, he just didn't know it yet. He was currently running up the fire escape with the captured ruby. Neither Saguru Hakuba nor Shinichi Kudo were present and Nakamori couldn't really be called an opponent, so this mission was as simple as the multiplication table. What should go wrong?
Kid opened the door to the roof of the museum and sprinted to the parapet.
"Stand still, kid!", The inspector had rushed after him with some police officers. Now they had to watch the Kaitou Kid take off his disguise as museum director.
"I'm sorry, Nakamori, but I will come back if there is more challenge. So try harder!"
Furious, the inspector ran up to the young thief and tried to grab the white cloak. But Kid tapped his brim again in greeting and then disappeared into the night. He just jumped and after a short while opened his glider.
"Damn!" This inevitably left Kid grinning. It was fun.
He steered his kite in the direction of the Haido Hotel to land, change clothes and then disappear. It was late and he didn't feel like falling asleep in class because of his tiredness.
Kid approached the roof and grinned again. Many of his fans had posted on the surrounding skyscrapers to better watch the show. So it would be easy to hide.
He landed on the railing. The people rushed to him: "Kid! Kid!"
Kid straightened up proudly and dropped a smoke bomb from his sleeve. He changed quickly and disappeared into the crowd. The master thief had magically escaped.
Kaitou Kuroba threw open the door to the stairwell and ran downstairs. After three floors he stopped. Two men stood on the heel and looked at him. A neon sign on the opposite side of the street bathed the scene in a neon green light. It was bizarre
Kaitou couldn't see much of the men, but one was incredibly tall and had long hair. Was that blonde? Both were dressed in black and had hats on. Who was that? Maybe plainclothes cops who Nakamori had stationed here?
No certainly not. Such an idea would never occur to him.
Kaitou hadn't moved an inch. His instinct told him to flee. Something was wrong with these two guys.
Kaitou could still hear the muffled voices of the crowd excitedly looking for him, but no other person had yet appeared here.
The three continued to stare at each other in silence. Suddenly the big guy made a move. He reached into the inside pocket of his long coat. He took something out and held it to his face. There was a short noise and he put it back. Then he reached into his trouser pocket and produced a small object. It clicked and fire flared. The guy lit his cigarette and then made the lighter disappear again.
Kaitou frowned. Didn't that guy have anything better to do than smoke one here?
"Good evening, Kaitou Kid," said the long-haired guy. Kaitou laughed embarrassed: "How do you come up with that?"
"Don't play the fool," the man drew on his cigarette and climbed the first steps. Kaitou's discomfort increased and he suppressed the urge to back away.
"How do you know that?" He started the counter-offensive. Apparently there was no point in playing the ignorant.
"We already knew who your father was," the man came closer and closer and the other followed him. He was smaller and a little plump.
"We even had the pleasure with him once before."
Kaitou swallowed. How did you know his father?
"Who are you?" He tried not to show his insecurity, but his hands were shaking with nervousness.
"My name is gin and that is vodka."
"Are you with Alcoholics Anonymous?"Kaitou backed away while the other two got closer and closer.
"You should be careful, boy."
In the meantime the two had reached him.
"We're here to do a deal."
"Business?" Kaitou backed away and kicked a step behind him with his heel.
"It's very simple. You steal something for us and we make sure that nothing happens to your friends."
"Is that supposed to be a threat?"
"Threat? It's a deal. You do your part and we do ours. It's easy."
"Forget it!"
Gin laughed: "Your father said that too. Before he died."
Kaitou turned pale: "What did you say?"
"Toichi Kuroba had also declined our offer. We were responsible for ensuring that he couldn't do that a second time."
Kaitou slumped a little: "You killed him?"
"I hope you realize now that it would be unwise not to cooperate with us."
"I will never work with you, and even less for you!"
"Then you should hurry up. Maybe you can still manage to catch your little friend."
Kaitou stared at them in shock, then turned and ran up the stairs. He slammed the door and struggled through the crowd. He looked around hastily. Aoko was nowhere to be seen and he would have noticed earlier if she had been here.
In the meantime Kaitou had fought his way to the parapet. He let his gaze wander through the night until he noticed that there were people on the skyscraper opposite. The crowd slowly thinned out there because Kid hadn't shown up again.
Kaitou picked up his binoculars and searched each face. There she stood! Aoko had a pure poster in her hand saying "Down with Kid!" had written. He dropped another smoke bomb, pulled on his costume, and jumped onto the railing.
The crowd behind him cheered again and the people on the other skyscraper spotted him too.He ignored her and jumped into the depths. Then he opened his kite and floated to the other roof. Before he got there, however, he saw Aoko. She was pushed to the parapet by a stranger. She tried to push back, but couldn't.
Kaitou was startled when he noticed that the man behind Aoko was also dressed in black. She was just being pushed forward again and picked up. Aoko screamed as she lost her feet. She kicked, but the man just threw her over the railing.
Kaitou cursed and immediately descended. Aoko looked at him with wide open eyes and held out her hand to him.
"Help!", The light voice rang in Kaitou's ears and he tried desperately to reach for her. She kept falling towards the ground and he continued to stretch. His hand came closer to hers. He could grasp it. Her fingers slipped from his and she fell.
"Aoko!", Kaitou saw her desperate look, "AOKO!"
It was too late. Her body hit the floor.
Stunned, Kaitou floated to a traffic light and landed on it. Police sirens could be heard, and the first cars were already shooting around the corner. The cars stopped and Nakamori rushed out.
"What happened?" He ran to Aoko. When he saw her, he sank to his knees: "Aoko! That can't be! Aoko!"
Kaitou was trembling all over. Those bastards! You would regret it!
Silently and magically, he disappeared undetected into the night. A grand entrance now seemed macabre to him.
