Chapter 2: the raven

I must have fallen asleep from exhaustion, because when I woke up, there was a rumble around me, I heard the babble of voices.
The car had apparently started to move and the group it was accompanying didn’t seem to be small.
I wondered how people would react if they found me in here. So I hid under the covers again and tried to overhear one of the conversations.
Apparently two men and a woman were talking to each other. The men laughed loudly, I could only hear the woman giggle softly. But what was that? Did I just really understand something about robbery? Was it now possible that I got caught up in one of the band of robbers roaming around the area?
What should i do now? I was defenseless against them.
Panic crept into me. I had heard many stories about what robbers did to young girls and women. And I didn't particularly like any of those stories.
However, I had never heard before that there were also robber gangs that also had female members. I tried to console myself with the thought that it was most likely minstrels trotting out there by the car talking about robberies.
These have actually increased in recent times. However, they did not seem to have fallen victim to any of these robberies. At least not yet.

As I listened to the two men quarreling and laughing and telling more stories - at least I hoped they were just stories - I noticed that I was getting more and more sleepy. My eyes got heavier and heavier until I finally fell asleep again.
This time, however, the calm did not last long. I woke to a rumble, the voices getting louder and clearer.
The car stopped moving. At least I thought so. Did that mean they'd want to get the blankets out of the car and find me?My heart was in my throat, so that for a while I was really scared that it was going to pop out of my mouth at any moment.
My breath was quick and hasty. In spurts and loud. I tried with all my might to calm myself down. But that didn't make sense either. Because one would find me here either way.
So I decided to get out of the car and run away. I secretly hoped there was a forest or high field nearby so that I had at least a small chance of getting away.
I was just peeling out of the covers when the tarp of the car was torn open and two men stuck their heads inside.
One was gaunt, had a long, angular nose that showed that it had broken several times and had healed badly.
The other was almost the exact opposite of the haggard one.
His face was very round, as was his bulbous nose. With his thick and long beard, he reminded me of the story about the forest people that we had always told in the village.
But he didn't look all that dangerous. I recognized that by the soft brown eyes.
The differences between these two men were truly like night and day.
"Well ... what do we have there?"
Startled, I looked into the gray-black eyes of the gaunt man. While he growled these words at me with his foul-smelling breath, he grinned openly at me so that I had a wonderful view of his yellow and black teeth. Once again I was panicked.
Apparently I was caught by robbers after all. I could feel tears welling up in my eyes. How fear constricted my throat.
Should my trip be over by now?
It couldn't be.
I was still no closer to my goal and now should I perish here?

While he leaned forward into the car and tried to snap at me, I pushed myself into the opposite corner, secretly hoping to become invisible."Where are you staying for so long? Is there anything interesting in the car?"
A quiet, deep male voice seemed to call for the creep. Soft noises, rustling. Shortly afterwards he seemed to be pulled away by something and the narrow face of a young man with jet black hair and piercing blue eyes appeared in my field of vision.
His way of looking at me was indefinable.
A mixture of surprise, anger and ... pity? Was that it?
He let his gaze flit once over the interior of the car, nodded briefly and then his face disappeared again.
I heard him whisper something to someone, but he was speaking too softly for me to understand the exact wording. A moment later his face reappeared in front of mine.
"Come on, come out of there ..."
He opened the tarp of the car completely and pulled it aside so that I had more than enough room to climb out.
At first I refused. I was looking for a trap in his eyes, which looked at me steadfastly, cool, distant, almost emotionless. Surely he just wanted to lure me out of there and after ... By the gods, I didn't want to think about it.
Inevitably I began to shiver again.
