Lebendig Begraben

Buried

She slowly opens her eyes. But contrary to what the girl expected, she does not see the ceiling of her room but rather three wooden slats that are connected by a transverse slat. It is made of oak, which the girl sees straight away, since her father is a carpenter. The little black-haired woman looks around nervously. Nowhere is there a way to escape. There is wood everywhere, only a little earth comes in through a small hole. Fear surrounds the little one's heart like an ice-cold hand. Her hands clasp something small, hard, intransigent. When she finally manages to look at the yielding one, she realizes that it is her music box that she loves so much. She winds the watch, cheeks streaked with tears. The soft melody sounds and fills the whole wooden coffin. Soft tears make their way down the girl's cheeks. You can softly hear the rain falling. It still seems pretty close to the surface. A choked cry for help comes from the innocent child's little throat. But nobody hears them. It doesn't know whether it's day or night, let alone which day. After she has wound up the music box twice, life begins in her. She calls out loudly for help and kicks the sturdy wooden slats as hard as she can. But no one hears the child's desperate sounds. At some point she is too exhausted for the whole thing. Now she just sings softly the song that her mother taught her to the tune of the music box. Over and over again she sings the same part of the song because she doesn't know anyone else. All tears have now dried up. The child has cried. The beautiful ocean blue eyes appear empty and lifeless. Even the silky black hair now looks dull. With white, ice-cold hands, she repeatedly winds the clock. The pale lips form the same well-known lines over and over again. At some point she hears steps approaching, but her body no longer really has the strength to draw attention to itself. Only the music box is relentlessly playing the song again. Then the steps fall silent. Soft weeping and soft words reach the ear of the buried. Some mourn the child who is still far from dead. They just don't know that it's still alive. This tender and young girl who could almost be mistaken for a porcelain doll. The frost has paralyzed the body to such an extent that even pulling the clock will soon be impossible. Finally, just before death gives way, you hear spade stabs. When the unyielding metal hits the solid oak, it is almost too late for the girl. Her heart is beating very weakly and her breath is barely noticeable, but she winds the music box one more time. Suddenly there is a lot of excitement around them. Someone desperately calls out a name. Is that yours? Somebody wants to take the music box from her. But the girl's icy fingers grip the watch so tightly that even the strongest man would not be able to snatch it from her. It's getting a little warmer, but the cold in the little child's body doesn't want to go away. It's a miracle that it still sings the soft song that the child's mother taught her. The singing is not really audible, but there. Only death hears these lovely sounds of the little girl. He greedily reaches out his bony, cold fingers to the girl to take her with him to his realm of the dead. The people bravely fight for the lives of the little ones. The heart of hers keeps skipping. The breath is practically nonexistent. A black veil covers the girl's field of vision and you notice how the last breath of life wants to slip out of her. But none of the people around it want it to be true. They had lost the girl once before, now they didn't want to lose her for good. The fight seems to have been lost and the music box has long since fallen silent. With a dripping nose, the mother of the almost dead child bends over the music box and winds it for the last time. A last attempt by a desperate father to bring his daughter back to life. Everyone in the room falls silent. You can only hear the soft melody of the music box. Suddenly something else breaks the almost perfect silence. A soft, beautiful song. The girl sings to the music. Hope and joy develop among the relatives. Everyone sings along and paramedics take care that the girl's condition stabilizes. It works slowly too. After several weeks in the hospital, the girl is allowed to go home again. She has never let go of the life-saving music box.
