Aller guten Dinge sind Drei
Preface
Emily
When I met Matt and Max I was three years old. My parents just worked all the time and so I, their only child, was deported to kindergarten as soon as I was old enough. On my first day in kindergarten, I crawled into a corner and expanded because I felt so lonely. While I was sitting there for a while, two boys my age suddenly appeared in front of me. They were like one another like an egg. Both wore green sneakers and light blue dungarees. One wore a red t-shirt and a yellow scarf and the other wore a yellow t-shirt and a red scarf. Both were exactly the same height, had short light brown hair and bright blue eyes. The two boys each held out a hand to me and helped me get up. "My name is Matt," said the boy in the red t-shirt. "And my name was Max," said the boy in yellow. "And what is your name?" both asked at the same time. "Emily," I said slowly, because I was very confused. I had never seen two people look so much like these two guys before. "How do you look so alike?" I asked slowly, staring from Matt to Max and trying to find at least a small difference between the two, but to no avail. Even the number of freckles on their noses matched. "We're identical twins," Matt told me while Max pulled a handkerchief out of his pocket and gave it to me so I could wipe the tears off my face. "Is this your first day here today?" asked Matt. I nodded and both boys immediately took one of my hands and Max said: "We have been here for a long time. We'll show you everything"
That day Matt and Max became my best friends. We just did everything together. They were almost a year older than me and had to go to school later to be in my class. I often went to their home after school, where their mother stood in the kitchen for hours because she thought I looked half starved. Your father started calling me his little princess at some point. He had always wanted a real daughter who was into princesses and pink dolls, but instead had Shane, who was more of a boy than her 14 brothers combined. Her mother took out the hairbrush every time we rang the doorbell. She loved my blonde locks and kept telling me that she wanted such hair color and locks too. And it was precisely for this feeling of security that I loved her.
As we finally got older, love came into play. When I realized at sixteen that both were in love with me and I was in love with both of them too, Matt and Max decided to do what they'd been doing all their lives. They shared what they had. When I was twenty the three of us moved in together and Matt and I started studying. Max, on the other hand, was more the artist. He attended an artist school three times a week and set up his own artist studio in one of the rooms. Matt became a successful lawyer, I worked as a social worker in the same building as Matt, and Max was at home painting while he kept our house in order. When I got home around three o'clock the house was clean, everything was tidy and a warm meal was on the table. Max and I were alone until eight o'clock and Matt came punctually at ten past eight. There weren't many who knew about our threesome relationship. Matt and Max's parents, as well as their siblings, of course knew about it and after a while they also accepted it. I had little contact with my parents since I moved in with Matt and Max. And apart from that, only my boss knew about it, who was also Matt's boss and of course his wife too. Everyone else, like my work colleagues, had no idea that Matt was a twin and most of the time I was only out with one of them in public.
I also work long Mondays. Then Matt and I got up at the same time, while Max liked to sleep late, showered together, ate something, drove to work together and then went to lunch together in our company's canteen. In the evening we drove home together and the three of us sat on the couch and watched a movie that Max was allowed to choose each time because Matt and I could never agree.
I didn't have to go to work on Tuesdays. So Max and I both slept late while Matt drove to work. After getting up we showered and then we spent the day cooking a dish that we had come up with ourselves. Whenever Matt came home from work, we always forced him to try our cooked food and then tried it too.
Both Matt and I didn't have to work long on Wednesdays. I was home at three and he came at five and then took me out to dinner.
I had a yoga class on Thursdays. At some point Max decided to take a look at it and has been coming with me regularly ever since.
On Fridays, Max and I went to a dance class. Matt wasn't really into dancing and culture, and that's why he didn't come along when Max and I went to the theater or the cinema or visited a museum on Saturdays. Most of the time, Matt would put in extra shifts on Saturdays, making thousands more a year. That's why Matt and I always went to church together on Sundays and then we went to a gym together, which was just around the corner from our house and was open every Sunday.
It was like a normal relationship, except for the fact that there were three of us. But that didn't bother us.
