The Song Of Midnight

The Start Of A Journey

Our story began on a snowy Thursday in November.

What year we didn't know. We had been trapped in this orphanage and this overwhelming world for far too long that at some point we lost our enthusiasm for counting the years.

We sat, like every evening, all together at the huge wooden table on which stood old soup, dried bread and old sausage and old cheese. We knew that in contrast to the posh food that the nobles were served every evening, it was shabby garbage, but compared to other orphanages we lived in luxury. Our housekeeper always taught us: "Be glad that the nobles of this country leave you something at all. Not everyone would receive this honor, remember that!" Nobleman, monarch, king or emperor, you will only be seen as a little rat that crawls around in the underground of the city, looking for anything to eat. So to the rest of society we are invisible, filthy and despicable and they let us feel that more than often enough.

We finished eating, and like 3 children did the dishes every evening. It was laid down in a plan. 3 different every day. The rest were either in the rooms, outside, or in the common areas. Or rather in the ONE common room. There were never really many in there, however, which is why Don, Natsu and I took this opportunity to chat things over with the three of them again.
Natsu had just gone to find some purses and some food so that we could get through the winter safely. Yes, we know you don't do that. But we didn't know how to help in any other way. So I and Don sat alone in the room.

"Well what do you think Luma, will he bring enough?" Don asked me thoughtfully. “I think so,” I grinned at him, “After all, Natsu didn't fall on his head.” At that moment, I heard the door open behind me and Natsu enter the room. Over time, we noticed who was approaching us by the steps we took. The thin, creaky wooden floor reinforced this effect even more. "Hey you bullies, all right?", He grinned at both of us from under his thick scarf, and pulled a cloth bag out of his coat pocket. "Yo, it took a long time, you master thief," Don joked, getting up from his chair. "Hey, hey, don't make fun of yourself! At least I got a little something out of today!" Natsu boasted, and pulled 2 wallets, a loaf of bread and a couple of copper coins from his pouch. Well, it really wasn't that much, but Natsu just knew how to turn every setback into a small success. In the end we weren't angry with him either.
"Well, at least," Don examined today's loot and circled the table. I sat grinning and watched the spectacle. These two just managed to make me laugh over and over again, no matter how bad we were. They were joking around for a while, when Natsu fell a small piece of paper from his coat pocket. "Well?" I said and picked up the little piece of paper. A kind of map was engraved on it, and something was also written on it, but I couldn't see it at first glance. "Huh? What did you bring with you, Natsu?" Don said puzzled. "I have no idea," replied Natsu. I held the piece of paper a little higher so that I might be able to read a little something after all, but I had the feeling that the writing was shimmering strangely, which ultimately made it impossible for me to decipher anything of the writing. "Give it to me!", Don said and immediately tore the scrap of paper out of my hand. "Don, watch out!", I instructed him, "you'll break it!" "Oh nonsense!" he grinned and twisted and turned the piece a little haphazardly in his hands. Natsu and I followed the said events carefully until I looked out the window some time later.

Outside the sun had already set and the moon with its thousand stars sparkled in the sky. The great snowflakes fell slowly from the sky, as if they wanted to be watched as they quietly found their way down. I stared out the window for a while because it somehow calmed me down. You felt free and all worries were blown away for a short time. When did you have the opportunity to let your thoughts wander? Not very often in such a world.
I looked up again at the moon, which seemed to be brighter than usual. The whole neighborhood, no, the whole village was illuminated by it at this late hour.
Some rays of light even found their way into this room. I followed them with my gaze, which ended up getting caught on the small scrap of paper in Don's hands.

And then something strange happened.

As if by magic, the characters, which were previously blurred, began to glow and become recognizable. We were amazed when that happened. Don was so shocked that he dropped the paper. I slowly got up from my chair and went to my two friends who were staring spellbound at the piece of paper. It was still glowing, but slowly I could make out a few words on it.
Slowly the sparkle of the paper diminished. We looked at each other. "You go first!", Natsu Don pushed in front of him and at the same time took a step back. "W-what? Why me?" "Don't shame, do it!" Natsu snapped and pushed Don a little further forward again. "I don't want to!", Don whined, "what if it's bad ?!" I had to roll my eyes inwardly. A piece of paper. Yes, it will surely eat you up my dear. So I decided to take all my courage. "I'll pick it up!" I said immediately resolutely. "Are you sure?" Don asked me skeptically, but I was not deterred, nodded to my friends and slowly moved in the direction of the piece of paper, which had now stopped shining. I admit it, I really had to reassure myself with every step I took so as not to send one of the guys up.Every step I took made my excitement and heartbeat soar. Now I stood in front of it. I slowly picked up the rag and was amazed that it was very pleasantly warm.

Now that the two boys had realized that the piece of paper wouldn't hurt them, they came here after all. I made sure they could see the paper well and then started reading:

"As the sun during the day, so also the moon by night.
But you can see everything during the day, nothing at all at night.
Places remain hidden no matter how much you look for them.
Noises guide us to our goal, which is why many lack the courage here.
But it is precisely these that are necessary to hear its sound.
The Song Of Midnights tones, during the uncertainty walk. "

I could hardly believe my eyes. Was this actually the route to the location in the Legend of the Song Of Midnight? No, this could not be. That was just a legend, after all. Or is it not? Eventually, while it was proven that no one had found the place until now, it was not proven that this place did not exist anyway. My mind drove carousel. Don and Natsu seemed to feel the same way. They stood next to me, completely perplexed. After a while I said, "What do you think? Is the legend of the Song Of Midnight really true?" I could tell that they were looking at me with divided opinions. One side of them says that it is not possible and that it is just an old fairy tale, nothing else.
But the other side of them wanted to take a risk. She wanted to believe that there was such a thing as a better, different world out there.

I sighed. "And?" I asked, "What do we do with it now?" Silence. Suddenly she was interrupted by Natsu. "We'll look for this place! Even if it's just a legend. What do we have to lose?"
Don and I looked at each other skeptically. But got the same thought at exactly the same moment. He was right. When did we ever risk nothing? Ultimately, our whole life consisted of the only risk of not lying starving on a street corner the next day.
We nodded to Natsu.
Straight away we grabbed our boots, scarves and gloves and left the orphanage, of course with our directions and some food.

It was freezing cold. The wind whistled through my hair and I immediately got goose bumps down my back. With the thought that we would soon find the place that was described on the map, I made some warm thoughts and trudged after my two friends through the knee-high snow. It was only after a good half an hour of wandering around that we noticed that this map was not really trying to steer us in a certain direction. "Damn it, this card is as useful as a stone," grumbled Natsu, leaning against the wall of a house, grumbling. “Can't there just be a big red X on it so we know where to look?” I chuckled. "If it was really that easy, the legend would have been found by now," I winked at him.Natsu sighed. "All right, and what do we do now? We are totally lost and it feels like it is even colder than before," Don said and leaned against the wall of the house next to Natsu. "I don't know," I replied thoughtfully. I really don't care much about it. We had a map that seemed to show the way, but it totally led us astray. We were practically in nowhere, we didn't even know which part of town we were in. Since it was so dark we couldn't orientate ourselves on anything.
"Wait a minute," I thought briefly. "That's it!"
I looked at them happily with wide eyes. "The map doesn't even want to guide us! It wants us to lose our orientation!"
Natsu and Don looked at me completely puzzled. "How, the map wants us to lose our bearings?" asked Natsu. "I know it sounds crazy, but the map said that places stay hidden at night, no matter how hard you look for them," I started to explain. “Uh, yes?” The boys still didn't quite get what I was getting at. "So since you can't see the place you're looking for, because it's night, you have to concentrate on the sounds and noises, and not on what you can see, you understand?" It slowly dawned on both of them. "The Song Of Midnight." Don muttered, "Of course, the Song Of Midnight! If we just follow the notes that the night plays for us, we'll find the place we're looking for! Hence the name!" We grinned at each other. It seems that we have now actually found the solution to the riddle.

“Um,” said Natsu suddenly, “what kind of tones do we have to pay attention to?” Even I wasn't prepared for this question. Sure,
