William Perry, called Will, comes from our world, from Winchester. He is 12 years old and muscular and stocky (for a normal human child). He has wide cheekbones, big eyes, and straight, black eyebrows. Unfortunately I don't remember the color of his eyes, let's just say he has black hair and brown eyes.
His mother is mentally ill. He has had to take care of her since he was seven.His father, John Perry, was a marine officer who retired from the army to become an explorer and lead expeditions to remote parts of the world.

Lyra Belacqua, also affectionately called Lyra Listreich by Iorek, is only a little younger than Will. Lyra's mother is the evil Mrs. Coulter, whose demon is a golden monkey. Mrs. Coulter worked for the Church's Oblation Board, I think.This cut the children off their daemons with a special knife in experiments, whereupon both perished miserably. They wanted the kids to be free of dust (dark matter, not ordinary dust) because dust is um ... the sin I think.
Lyra's father is Lord Asriel, his demon is a snow leopard, Stelmaria. It is his fault that she comes to Ci`gazze. He killed her friend Roger in Lyra's world in order to open a bridge between the worlds with the tension between him and his demon. The climate of all worlds changed more or less strongly. Lyra followed her father over the bridge, but then lost him and ended up in another world, in Ci`gazze.
The alethiometer, or the golden compass, looks similar to a compass, but has 36 symbols all around, is made of shimmering crystal glass and a finely crafted brass case. Only six of them were ever made. It has four hands, three short ones and one long one.The three short ones can be adjusted and a question can be formulated, the fourth pointer then gives the answer.
The magic knife is a dagger with a double-edged blade about 20 cm long and a handle made of rosewood, in which the figures of two angels are inlaid with golden wire.
One edge cuts through absolutely any material (not like the Z-sword), the other edge can cut openings between the worlds. But only the wearer can lead it like this. The knife always looks for its wearer itself, as a sign of this, the wearer loses his little finger and the ring finger of his left hand.
Cittàgazze is a city in another world, there are ghosts that eat something in adult humans, so that only the empty bodies remain. (empty of what the ghosts eat, a friend told me they eat the self, or the soul, someone else said they eat the dust, someone once said they eat the hidden demon.)
The ghosts are afraid of the magic knife, which is why many people are after it.
Lee Scoresby is an aeronaut, a hot air balloonist. He comes from Lyra's world, from Texas. His daemon is a rabbit named Hester. Lee is close friends with Iorek.
Iorek Byrnison, an armored bear, is normally not good at talking to people, they once got him drunk (sounds sick) and then stole his armor, his soul as he says, from him.
Only through Lyra could he get it back.
Through an intrigue, she found out, he had lost his claim to his throne and was cast out by the armored bears. Through another trick by Lyra, he also got his throne back.
