Chapter: "Kindred Souls" or "The Bet" 6

A completely new beginning

Several weeks had passed since Gohan left his family and home. He missed her very much; his father, his mother and Son Goten. He had cried for this reason many times the first week, but Piccolo would always tell him not to act like a baby. In the first few days, Son Gohan had wished for nothing more than to be home again, to sleep in his warm bed and to enjoy his mother's good food at every meal. It was difficult for him to get used to sleeping under the sky. His back hurt in the morning and he had the feeling that he hadn't eaten anything in a long time. Not that Piccolo let his outstretched arm starve to death, but the meat, whether grilled over an open fire or raw, that he offered him did not quite meet Son Gohan's idea of a proper meal. He had an appetite for pasta, potatoes, minced meat, rice, schnitzel and many other delicacies, but definitely not for this meat anymore.Son Gohan sincerely hoped that the whole year would not be the same. But compared to his training, these were just trivialities. Piccolo trained with him every day from morning to night. At first it was normal endurance training, then the fight. And every day he had sore muscles. Every morning he wondered how many bones and joints he had. Every morning he wished it was all just a dream. But he dared not contradict Piccolo in any way. It took a month or more for his body to get used to the strain. Now that his life was almost comfortable again, a new problem was approaching. Nature was approaching winter. (At the beginning of autumn Son Gohan had joined Piccolo.) It was getting cold. Gohan began to freeze in the nights, but he didn't dare to get a blanket out of his capsule. He didn't want to be seen as a weakling. Night after night he suppressed his tremors and forced himself to control himself.

One night, however, it was quite stormy and particularly cold. No matter how hard Son Gohan tried and concentrated, he couldn't hide his tremors. Piccolo, who always sat a few meters away from him and watched him, could of course not fail to see the huddled figure of Gohan twitching and trembling. `He's shaking like a leaf. Why doesn't he get a blanket out? He got up and walked over to the little boy, who was lying on the floor with his back to him. When he got to Gohan, he bent down and wrapped his right arm around his torso. When he picked him up, he woke up. He blinked sleepily and looked up at Piccolo in amazement. However, he said nothing, did not even seem to have noticed that Gohan had woken up. Instead, he walked over to the place where he had just been sitting in silence. He put Gohan back on the floor and sat cross-legged next to him.Gohan made no noise. "Come up, I know you are awake." said Piccolo a little briskly. Gohan raised his head and looked questioningly at Piccolo. This stuck out his arm to him. “Come here.” Now his voice sounded a little friendlier. Son Gohan listened and sat down next to Piccolo. Before he knew it, Piccolo had picked him up and put him on his knee. Piccolo was warm, it seemed as if he didn't mind the cold. Gohan couldn't help but lean against Piccolo's shoulder and close his eyes. `Good. Just go back to sleep. thought Piccolo. While Gohan's breathing calmed down again, Piccolo searched his pockets. He found what he was looking for pretty quickly. The capsule. He opened it. There was a suitcase in it, which he immediately searched for a blanket. When he found a cozy blanket, he put it over his left shoulder and covered Gohan with it. (Gohan sat on his left knee.) When this was done, he closed his eyes and tried to sleep.

The first rays of the sun lit up the surroundings. Piccolo was awake. He usually started training with Gohan around this time. But he didn't want to wake him up. He had to think. About himself. About Gohan. And about how it should go on now. While he was brooding, Chi Chi's words came back to his mind. "I don't care how well Piccolo can train him. A child doesn't just need training and combat experience. A child needs trust, security and love!" Piccolo was pretty sure that he would not give any of the things she mentioned to Gohan would have. But on the contrary. Since leaving, he had always taken care to distance himself from the bailout. 'Why actually? You didn't make such a riot during your visit either ... The boy isn't doing anything to you. `No, Son Gohan really didn't do anything to him. At least nothing bad. Rather, his company was pleasant. There weren't many people who were kind to him. Sure Son Goku did, and his friends were always polite, but that wasn't what he wanted. There was never anyone who had considered him a friend. Who had treated him as such. It was Son Gohan. But since Piccolo shook him out of sleep early in the morning and often gave him the cold shoulder, this friendliness seemed to be waning in him too. Piccolo had the feeling that Son Gohan hadn't laughed heartily since leaving home. Yet it was precisely this laugh that the children produced while playing that fascinated him so much.

Hours had passed while Piccolo brooded. Son Gohan stirred. When he noticed what time it was (or how high the sun was already) he started up. "Tell me Piccolo, we didn't both overslept, right?" He looked at Piccolo. This one smiled. "I wouldn't call it that. Are you well rested? "Gohan swallowed. He didn't mean to say that he was still dog-tired." Well? "" Well, "he hesitated." Actually, I could still use a good night's sleep. "He looked down, embarrassed." Then why are you still chatting around here? "Piccolo hissed at him playfully." It's okay! We can start training right away. "Son Gohan jumped up." I could have bet that he has changed somehow. "As he was about to move away from Piccolo, Piccolo held him back." Didn't you say you were tired? "" But ... "Gohan looked at him puzzled." Come on, lie down. "Son Gohan didn't know what to make of it. Piccolo's voice sounded friendly, but he still didn't dare to contradict him. So he lay down on the floor, cuddled in his still warm blanket. It didn't take long until he was soundly asleep again. After a few minutes he turned away to go for a little walk and disappeared.

When Piccolo came back, Gohan had already collected firewood, made a fire and started to "fry" game on the improvised rack. He was hungry. Gaaaaanz enormous hunger. But otherwise he felt great. He had the feeling that he could do anything today. This was obviously related to the fact that he was able to sleep longer today. When Piccolo entered the clearing in the forest where they had set up their "camp", Gohan didn't have to look first to see who it was. He just knew. Who should come by here? “Do you want something too, Piccolo?” Piccolo said no. `Who was also unusual ... 'thought Son Gohan and started to eat. “When you're done, we'll start training.” “Great!” Piccolo blinked in amazement. `Class? `He hadn't expected that at all. Seemed to be due to the extra bit of sleep he'd given him.

So, I'm not further yet. I'm not even sure if I'll keep writing ... o_O
