Chapter 6: Water Treads
Slowly his eyes got used to the eternal shadow and he realized that he was lying in a prison-like room. He sat up quickly and heard chains rattling from a distance. When he got up and took a step, he fell on his nose because he was also chained. The metal on his ankle felt cold. The ground was damp and he immediately straightened up again. What's that strange smell in here? He wondered, and sniffed. Now he felt validated because at first he thought he was in a toilet. It really smelled like that. He grimaced in disgust and only breathed through his mouth. He had suffered enough for today and so he lay back on his cold, hard bench and tried to go back to sleep.
Gotthard roamed the country once again to gather new knowledge. This time he came to Neustadt to look at the market.First he went to the fishmonger. He sold a huge fish and claimed that he pulled it out of the water himself. The fish was as big as a choice and had gills like a shark.
"What does it cost?" the druid asked the seller.
"8000 euros, it costs!" replied the foreign seller.
Gotthard noted the price and went to the next stand. Here, too, a huge fish was offered. Gotthard asked again:
"What does it cost?"
"16,000 euros!" replies the German seller. Gotthard nodded and considered the whole thing.
His conclusion was that the locals sell everything twice as much as the foreigners.
"Learned something again!" the ex-teacher said to himself and took a notebook out of his pocket. Here he wrote down his conclusion and then put the book back out of his pocket. Then he bought the foreigner's fish and retired into a dark alley. Then he ate the fish, wrapped the leftovers (which wasn't exactly small) in paper and gave them away to hungry street children.
He loved doing good. He had become a teacher to teach the children something. He always did this with humor and in a child-friendly manner. Unfortunately, one day he got bored and by chance he withdrew into the vampire world. You couldn't really call the vampire world the whole vampire world, because it was something more than that. It was like normal life, beautiful and ugly at the same time. There was a constant give and take. Attention was given or paid to her, and adventure was rewarded in return.
When Gotthard left the city, he learned a lot and everything seemed to be in order. He had to re-learn everything he knew, because everything that was not real in the human world was an excruciating reality here.
Suddenly an old wandering song reminded him that he hummed happily to himself:
You go out into wide fields,
Have neither bread nor money
want to sing, dance forever,
they just because the bugs.
You go out into wide grain,
The delphinium blooms everywhere,
want to sing forever, shriek,
throw your leg in the air!
Destin had found that the light from the crack wasn't sunlight, but the glow from a candle. If it had been the sun, it wouldn't be so cold here. So he was stuck in an underground prison. But why? What did he do? Destin couldn't remember, so he listened to the noises that were playing outside of the room. In order to be able to see something, he knelt down in front of the gap and peered through it with one eye. Unfortunately, he couldn't see everything because the chain was holding him back. A thought shot in his head, what was the use of the chain in a room from which there was no escape?
Outside, a guard was talking to a servant. The butler had white hair and wore a blue robe. In addition, his neck was adorned with a frill. He did not see the guard's face as the guard had his back to him. Suddenly he turned and pulled away. Still, he stayed within earshot, climbed a flight of stairs, and then his footsteps died away.
A little later a hatch was opened high above him and this time yellow, warm sunlight fell in. At first it blinded Destin, but then it got darker. During this time he reconsidered his research. The servant looked exactly like Aunt Rita's clerk from Heustreu.
The guard looked down at him. She owned the shadow. She slipped a long rope through the trapdoor and asked Destin to climb up. On the occasion, Destin recognized the Dwarf dialect the guard was using.
When the boy had clung to the rope, he was pulled up, with the man's groans and groans, and led through a huge cave. The man was shorter than I had thought because he was a dwarf and such people have a habit of being on the short side. He was a stocky fellow with auburn hair and two pigtails. He had leather armor and a spear for protection.
Every five meters he looked up at Destin to make sure he wasn't up to anything. His watchful eyes watched him constantly, carefully exploring every possible escape the boy might consider.
Benedict sat on a chair in a fireplace room and waited for the door to open. To pass the time, he tipped his chair a little and felt 10 years younger. But he stopped immediately because he realized that he was too old for such games. He checked his face. The scars were still there. Everyone had thought he was dead and that was until yesterday. Fortunately, a gnome healer with the water of life had turned up in the underground city.He came from the north and was only passing through to the south, because far above the southern sea, there was an island that was only inhabited by gnomes. It was called Gnomisland and the map of the island was not yet finished. Benedict's idea was that they could follow the healer and help him complete the map, since they were on the run like so. The gnome's name was Albert Meisel and thought the idea was excellent. He had told the magician that he would rather travel in company than alone. That was really funny, because gnomes mostly live alone and don't like it when others are around, especially not when they are humans. So he was special. The only friend he had was a little squirrel that was constantly scurrying around him.
"Better hide behind the curtain!" cried the blind man. "Maybe he'll be startled. Destin had never seen a gnome before!"
That was his problem. The water of life had no effect on his blindness, a water that would bring the dead back to life could not cure his blindness.
"Then you have to hide too!" the gnome with the dark green skin, the big googly eyes and the bulbous nose. It was covered with scars and bumps. But they weren't injuries. The skin of these living things always looked like this. Something that came from the future completely contaminated the once human-littered world. Some people hid underground and adapted to the conditions, getting smaller and wider. This is how the dwarfs were born for generations.
The rest of the people built protective walls and were spared except for a few. The few became gnomes who were exposed to radiation for longer. To elves who had looked death in the eye for a shorter period of time. The trolls evolved from gnomes and elves. Vampires were people whose DNA clashed with all the other DNAs of living things. Only the half-vampires evolved like the trolls from the vampires and the people. What caused this development was not yet known to this day.
When Destin entered the room, he had to be supported by the burly guard, because at the sight of the suddenly awakened wizard another attack of weakness made itself felt. He must have inherited that from his mother.
Finally he asked, completely surprised: "Are you alive?"
“Yes,” answered Benedict, “but only because the nice man here helped me!” With that he pointed to the healer, who had just come out from behind the curtain.
"His name is Albert Meisel, we will accompany him on his way south!"
The wizard was surprised that Destin hadn't moved when the gnome appeared. He didn't even flinch, but now he began to ask more questions:
“Why was I imprisoned here?” “The dwarfs thought you blew my life light out!” “But I haven't!” “As soon as I was alive again I told them the same thing and that's why you're here in this room now! "
Strangely enough, the gnome hadn't yet joined the conversation, but now he cut her off:
"Uh, how about if we were to leave, because actually I didn't want to stay that long!" "We're going! But first Destin has to take a shower and get some fresh clothes. Something to eat wouldn't be bad either ! " Benedict denied suddenly and waved for a vat of water, a feast and fresh clothes. The servants obeyed and brought everything.
After the bath and the meal, they set out quickly and headed south through a large pine forest. A guard of the dwarfs wanted to accompany them to the south coast. His name was Karl-Heinz and it was the guard who pulled Destin out of the dungeon. On their way there was no sun, because the clouds covered the whole sky and it looked like a thunderstorm. Clouds of mist spread across the ground and clung to blades of grass and branches. The forest seemed eerie and almost endless. They made hardly any noise as the wet needles under their feet were soft as snow and gave way with every step. In the west they heard the calls of the wolves and felt encouraged to take the path faster than they would in the sun.
Ahead of them was a row of cliffs rising to a point from the green of the forest, which were washed around by the mist. At their feet, there were mostly small ponds and ponds, the water of which shimmered swampy in green light. The rock was overgrown with moss and lichen up to 2 meters and the rest was steep in the smoke of the mist.
The hikers did not have a very lively conversation, because the coats had gotten very wet from the dew and were difficult to pull
