Chapter: Diablo I
Diablo
The plane started to land. As elegant as an eagle, it slipped onto the runway and came to a stop after rolling a hundred meters. The passengers got up quickly and went outside.
It was quite warm outside and the sun was pungent from the sky. Fortunately, a fresh wind blew through our faces to greet us. Tyson and my brother talked excitedly, while Kai, as always, was silent and tried to ignore the chatter of the two.
Rio tipped next to me and nudged me with his wet snout. I absently stroked his head and walked on.
What is always in the history books? America, the land of desires and dreams? I have no idea, after all, history isn't my favorite subject right now. Nevertheless, I sincerely hoped that my dream would come true here and that I would finally see him again.
We left the airport and were taken into town in a taxi, where a bus was already waiting for us.That's where we came across Ray. We wouldn't meet Justin, Cliff and Gary until later. Finally we got on the bus and drove off.
"Where are we going?" Tyson asked, looking curiously out the window.
"To the BBA research center," replied Mr. Dickenson.
The bus struggled through the traffic out of the city and was now driving along a wide country road. Wide fields and meadows stretched beside the road and reached to infinity. A hawk flew very close to the bus and then started to dive in order to get hold of its selected prey. A huge building loomed in front of us. It really shone in the sun and was surrounded by a huge electric fence. Mr Dickenson told us that this is the research center. Behind the center was a small forest and a paddock in which I could see some horses grazing peacefully. To the side was a white building with a red roof.A stable, I guessed. The bus passed the control gate and let us get out.
It was damn boring in this research building. I didn't speak my thoughts out loud, of course, because the others seemed to like it. Rio suddenly stopped and started barking like crazy.
"Rio! Shut up," I said to the dog, but not seriously enough because it didn't stop.
A woman and a girl came into the corridor and greeted us.
"MOM !!!", Max and I said at the same time and fell on our mother's neck. However, the friendly greeting did not last long. Actually, I wanted to ask about him right away, but then let it go. Would have been a bit tactless.
Instead, Mom and Emily took us around. Rio often yawned extensively and smacked his lips tiredly. I scratched Rio's ears understandingly and talked to him well.
"What do you think of a little match?"Mom asked, looking at us.
Since I didn't feel like it, I pretended I hadn't heard and continued to stroke Rio. Max, Ray and Tyson accepted the challenge. Tyson and Ray won. Max lost miserably to Emily, however. Embarrassed, he looked at the floor and was visibly disappointed.
"Don't worry, my darling," Mom said gently to him. "As a compensation, I'm taking you out to lunch, huh?" She suggested.
Tyson accepted enthusiastically and the others agreed. We didn't talk much when we ate. But one question burned on the tip of my tongue that it was almost unbearable. Mom didn't like him very much, I knew that. But I really have to see him. Finally I couldn't take it anymore and asked my long-awaited question: "Where is he?"
Mom put her cutlery aside and looked at me seriously. Emily cast a tense look between my mom and me. Apparently she knew.
"He is here."answered my mother and picked up her cutlery again.
My heart skipped. "May I see him?" I asked excitedly, shifting back and forth in my chair. I looked pleadingly at my mother, but that didn't make much sense because she had closed her eyes. I held my breath and waited for an answer.
Mom sighed heavily. "I can hardly forbid you."
"What is it actually about?", Tyson asked and looked, just like Ray and Kenny, perplexed. Kai didn't seem interested in the whole thing and continued sipping his tea.
"Do you want to come with me?" Emily asked, not sounding enthusiastic.
Thousands of butterflies were dancing in my stomach as we left the building through the back door and stepped outside. In front of us were the paddock and the white stable building. Some of the horses raised their heads and looked curiously over at us.But there was no trace of him.
Maybe he's in the stable, I thought.
However, Mom and Emily led us past the stable and I looked confused. I exchanged a look with my brother, but he just shrugged. You couldn't see what was behind the stable from the street and now I knew why. Behind all the splendid buildings and paddocks stood a small wooden shed with a small round paddock made of brown, rotten wood. I was disappointed. The entrance to the shed was locked with half a gate and inside you could only see darkness.
"Why is he here?" I asked my mother reproachfully.
"Well, that's so ...", she got no further.
From the inside of the shed came an angry whimper and powerful hooves kicked the wooden door and shattered the wood. This procedure was repeated three times and the wood broke completely. With one leap he came out of the dark shed and galloped to the other end of the little paddock. There he stood in all its glory and beauty. His ears were put back and he pawed his hooves ominously. His pitch black fur was dull and didn't shine in the sun the way I remembered it. To prove his strength and aggressiveness, he climbed, wedged his front hooves, and snorted menacingly.
"BOAH !!!!" I heard Tyson say astonished next to me.
I went to the paddock and leaned against the fence. Instinctively, I put my index and middle fingers to my lips, whistled, and called his name.
He perked up his fine ears attentively and neighed at me. Then he trotted off and came to me. He puffed his nostrils happily and snorted through my hair. Tears welled up in my eyes and I wrapped my arms around his neck. I softly whispered caresses in his ear and he listened attentively.
Ray, my brother and Tyson came up to me and immediately his ears snapped back and he snapped at them."He hasn't changed a bit," said my brother, slightly angry.
"What's his name?" Asked Ray, admiring the stallion.
"Diablo." I replied and gently caressed his nostrils.
I let go of Diablo and climbed the fence. My mom and Max immediately protested, but I didn't listen to them. He rubbed his head hard on my shoulder and nudged me gently. After patting him extensively on the neck, I took a good look at his right hind leg. I checked it and picked it up. The sprain had healed well. The only flaw Diablo had was that it was completely filthy. Then the question I asked earlier came to mind and I asked it indignantly. "Why isn't he standing in the stable with the other horses? A little company couldn't hurt him."
"He was also first with the other horses, but there were problems."Emily replied calmly.
"He took half the box apart, crushed the potions and flooded the box, he bites the nurses and scientists and he tore the vet's smock." Mom replied angrily.
"He definitely didn't do it on purpose," I defended my beloved horse.
"Luna.", My mom started seriously and looked me in the eye. "He's dangerous. Diablo is unpredictable and aggressive."
Her words burned into my heart like glowing metal and my stomach contracted. Why is she saying that?
"It's better if we go back in now. Dessert is still waiting for us.", Emily skillfully changed the subject.
"May I stay here and clean it a bit? The hooves also need to be filed." I asked, trying to suppress the trembling in my voice.
Fortunately, Mom didn't mind and hired a groom to bring me cleaning supplies. While the others were leaving I started cleaning Diablo thoroughly. Rio lay down against the wall of the shed and was dozing. Diablo held still and enjoyed being groomed. He had closed his eyes and was dozing. When I was finished the sun sank on the horizon. Diablo was given three buckets of water and brought oats and hay. He began to eat with relish. Footsteps approached the paddock and I turned around. Immediately, Diablo's ears snapped back.
"I need to talk to you," my mom said seriously.
I didn't know why, but I knew it was about Diablo.
"It's about Diablo," she began hesitantly.
Didn't I tell you?
"I don't want you to see him again, ride him or have any other contact with him. I don't want to see you near him. He's just too dangerous. And how should it go if you win the matches here and beyond Russia travels? It would be unreasonable if your father had to take care of him and he cannot stay here either. After the final fight he is put to sleep. Your father and I think it's best. "
"MOM !!!!" I screamed in horror. "You can't do that! And why don't you let me ride him? He's my horse !! You can't just decide that."
"Luna, my angel," she said gently.
My angel? Oh no, if she says that she means business.
"I don't want anything to happen to you. Please, understand me. It took a lot of effort to make this decision. If you weren't a member of the BladeBreakers and were at home, that wouldn't be a problem and you would, of course keep him. But, under the circumstances. You're getting a new horse. We have a lovely little gelding here that is for sale. "
I was so horrified that I couldn't even cry.I said goodbye to Diablo for a long time and he seemed to sense that something was wrong. He nudged me encouragingly and whinnied softly. With a heavy heart I went to the bus with Rio.
The next accident was waiting for me in the hotel. Justin, Gary, and Cliff were staying in a different hotel across town. Once again I had to share the room with the boys, which I didn't really have a problem with. There were two double beds in which we all had to find space. I slept between my brother and Tyson. But there was no question of sleeping. Tyson babbled incomprehensible stuff in his sleep and kept wrapping his arm around me. But, that wasn't the only reason I couldn't sleep. I just couldn't get my mom's speech out
