Chapter: Crimson moon

End times and new beginnings

Crimson moon

For everyone who wandered the streets that night it was as if the world was going to end.
The sky was dark, darker than usual, and the full moon was christened blood red.
That night the world should change, change forever.
An old man ran through the streets of the dark city, hugging a small inconspicuous bundle to his chest and running like the devil was behind him.
Lightning flashed and thunder rolled over the city's gorges.
The old man ran as fast as he could, his steps were weak and unsteady, but he kept pushing himself to keep walking.
His goal was a small inconspicuous house.
The man threw the gate that separated the property from the rest of the city and after just a few steps he reached the door.
He knocked hard on the door and waited impatiently for someone to open it, but nobody opened it, again he raised his hand and hit the door as hard as he could. This time he was heard, after a few minutes the heavy double doors opened and a young nun appeared before him.
"Yes, what can I do for you."
The man rushed up to her and pressed something into her arm, it looked like a rolled-up blanket.
"Take care of him, his name is Alex."
The man's voice was nothing more than a whisper.
"Man mustn't find him ... I ask her ... one mustn't find him."
The man turned and staggered away and disappeared into the stormy night.
The nun looked at the small bundle in her arm and felt something move in it.
Carefully she lifted part of the blanket aside, revealing a baby's small head.
The nun closed the door again and carefully picked the child up again.
Her voice was just a whisper. "Don't worry, my little Alex, you are safe here, I will take care of you."
Unfortunately Angelina Merris did not know what responsibility she had taken on when she walked through the corridors of the abandoned house with the little one, a house that was once an orphanage, and with this child should become one again. One year later
A veiled figure ran through the streets of the city, throwing worried glances at the sky and at the slowly setting sun.
Darkness means danger kept going through the person's head, she quickened her pace and went to a house whose window was decorated with bars and crosses.
The fence that was drawn around the house and the property was also decorated with crosses.
The heavy-looking door of the house was opened when the veiled person entered the property, an older woman with gray hair was standing in the door and hurriedly waved the person in.
"Hurry up, Sister Angelina, it's already getting dark. Please hurry up."
When the door closed the cloaked person took off the hood and dark brown hair and a delightful face came to light.
Sister Angelina put the heavy-looking things next to the bag that she had just carried and put on her nun's robe again. The old woman stood behind her.
"I'm glad you're back, even if it's very late. We were all worried, please don't ever do that again."
Sister Angelina turned and put a reassuring hand on the old woman's shoulder.
"Don't worry, Miriam, nothing has happened. And now let's go to the Mother Superior."
The old woman nodded, took the bag and followed Sister Angelina further inside the house.
They climbed the stairs to the next floor and headed for the door across from the stairs.
They knocked on the door and went in, a woman in her late 50s was sitting behind a desk.
"Sister Angelina, you're finally here."
"Excuse me, Mother Superior, but the city is in chaos."
The Mother Superior turned to the window and looked out.
"You are right there, the times have become darker. And I fear they are only getting darker."
The women nodded.
"Says Mother Superior, how is little Alex?"The matron turned and looked sharply at Sister Angelina.
"I'm glad that I let him here, that damned child."
Angelina dropped her eyes and nodded cautiously.
"And for that I am grateful to you, Mother Superior, very much."
She nodded again and then left the office with her eyes downcast.
Her way led her from there to the basement of the house where she had a small room.
When she stepped through the door, she immediately saw the reason for the mother superior's bad mood.
In the middle of the room on the floor was a little boy of about 5 years old with pitch-black hair, playing with old, well-worn building blocks.
When the door opened the boy turned around and beamed at Angelina with bright silver / gray eyes.
The boy jumped up immediately and ran towards Angelina with outstretched arms, and she crouched down and took the little one in her arms.
"Well, Alex, you were nice too."
The boy nodded vigorously and grinned all over his face.Angelina looked at the little one, since she was entrusted with him about a year ago, he has grown at an unbelievable rate.
She knew that his intelligence had grown too, but he had never spoken before, and Angelina was sure that he could.
The boy tried at all costs to get out of her arm, and he managed.
He ran to the bed and came back with a piece of paper that he held out to Angelina.
"What do you have that Alex, did you paint something for me."
The boy nodded wildly and thrust the note into her hand.
Angelina looked at the piece of paper and almost froze, there was a house to be seen that was supposed to represent the orphanage.
But the house was ablaze, and a blood-red full moon could be seen in the sky.

Two years later
The world had changed and her innocent face had turned into a twisted grimace.
Sister Angelina stood at one of the windows on the first floor and watched the slowly setting sun as she was spoken to from behind."Sister Angelina, please close the shutters before it's dark."
"Yes Mother Superior."
She heard the Mother Superior leave the room and close the door.
As she should, she began to close the last shutters here as well.
Only one window was missing, but before she closed everything here, something outside caught her attention.
A small figure crouched at the fence, a small figure that looked very much like a small child.
Angelina cast worried looks at the setting sun and made a decision.
She closed the window, left the room and immediately called for the Mother Superior.
"MOTHER UPPER, COMING FAST."
The mother superior appeared in the door of another room.
"What's the matter sister."
"There is a child crouching by the western fence."
The Mother Superior looked worriedly at her watch.
"You are safe."
Angelina nodded.
"All right, but hurry up."
"Yes Mother Superior."
As fast as she could Angelina ran to the main door and opened it, the Mother Superior followed her and waited at the door while Angelina left the property and hurried to the west side of the house. She quickly reached the west side of the property and crouched in front of the child.
It was a little girl, maybe 6 or 7 years old, completely scared and hypothermic.
Angelina picked up the child and talked to him well as they went back to the entrance.
"Quickly to the hospital room with her, she seems to be completely at the end of her tether."
Angelina nodded and followed the Mother Superior to the hospital room.

"puts her on the bed," said the Mother Superior and took a blanket out of a closet and wrapped the little girl in it.
The girl's fiber was immediately measured and something to eat was brought.
"So my little one, you don't have a fever. Just a little hypothermic ... and definitely hungry."
The girl nodded with a shy smile, the old lady Miriam picked up the little girl.
"Don't worry, Mother Superior, I'll take the little one into the kitchen and make sure that she gets something to eat."
"Do that to Miriam, and then take her to the third floor dormitory. We still have a few beds available there. "
The old lady nodded and left the sickroom with the girl.
"You did well, Sister Angelina, without you the poor thing would probably be dead by now."
Angelina nodded and straightened her robe.
"Thank you Mother Superior, if you allow me I will first withdraw."
"Do this calmly."
The young nun left the sickroom and went back down the steps to the basement.

When she opened the door to her room, her protégé was already in bed.
Angelina sat on the bed can and looked at the boy.
Alex had been with her for three years now, and she was still amazed at how fast he grew.
He was definitely 16 years old from the looks of it, and Angelina had to admit that he was very worried.
Alex wore his long black hair in a pigtail tied at the back of his neck.
His body was well trained, even though he almost always stayed down here in the room. And he still didn't speak.
Angelina looked at the clock on the dresser next to the bed and noticed that it was ready shortly before midnight.
She sat here the whole time and didn't notice how the time had passed.
As quietly as she was possible, she left the room to make a little inspection of the house.
Her way led her first to the fireplace room on the first floor where old Miriam was sitting with a book.
"Sister Angelina, you can't sleep."
"No, I'll take a short walk through the house now, maybe I can sleep then."
Angelina went to one of the windows and peered out through a very small crack in the shutter.
She could see a full, blood-red moon.
"Miriam, have you already seen the moon today."
"Yeah, just like three years ago when it started."
With a small movement of the hand she pushed a small bolt in front of the opening so that no light could be seen from outside.Angelina crossed the room again and continued on her way, which now led her into the kitchen.
She quickly checked the doors and windows, when she realized that everything was locked, she decided to make another cup of tea.
With a good cup of tea, she continued her walk, which now led her to the first floor to the bedrooms for the oldest children.
From one of the rooms she could still
