Chapter 1 Kaede's rejection

Actually it was as always, Kagome had spotted a splinter of the Shikon no Tama and after a short time the group had tracked down the demon that was carrying it. It was one of the lesser youkais in the shape of a serpent, a subordinate of Narakus, who was only out to get the splinters that Kagome was carrying.

Inuyasha, Sango and Miroku knew that they could defeat him with ease, but on this day they thought it would be better if Shippo and Kagome should stay out of everything, as a bite from this snake demon could quickly be fatal. They attacked. From the observation, Kagome could see that they had been friends for 3 years and that they were all a well-rehearsed team.

To test how strong the youkai really was, Sango hurled her Hiraikotsu, an oversized boomerang, at the demon and when it returned she caught it again effortlessly as if it were a toy. At the same time, Miroku launched one of his attacks, and Inuyasha pulled out Tessaiga. Everything looked the same as always.

It whirled dust and dirt around after Inuyasha had used Tessaiga because it hadn't rained for a few weeks and at first it was not possible to tell whether the youkai was dead or not. But Inuyasha was sure of it and only said briefly to Kagome: "It's done, come and get the splinter!" Kagome came as ordered, but when she was only a few steps away from the others, the dust settled and Inuyasha was wrong. The blow was not dead, it had grown even bigger.* Tessaiga failed ... ... no, that can't be true! * everyone thought as if they were one. Miroku, who had Kagome within reach, pushed her backwards out of reflex and Inuyasha indicated that she should withdraw again.

Kagome didn't want to let that sit on her, they had been walking together for so long and she had also improved her bow technique. Whenever she had the opportunity to go to school in her time, she took the chance and trained with the archers in physical education. So she took the bow and arrows strapped to her backpack and returned to the battle.
Sango had seen this out of the corner of her eye and shouted: "Kagome, go to Shippo for safety!" But she could not be dissuaded. Resolutely, Kagome drew her bow and fired.
Inuyasha, who was just able to dodge and had backed away in shock when he wanted to attack the demon again, looked first at Kagome, then in the direction in which her arrow had flown. She had hit the demon and pierced it.

Relief could be seen on everyone's faces, as the youkai now had to be defeated. But they had been happy again too soon. The hole that Kagome's arrow had burned through the Youkai's body grew back together and disappeared. * Could it be that my arrows AND Tessaiga are failing? * she thought to herself and pale slightly at the thought.

They didn't know how to defeat the demon now. Nobody was at the end of their tether yet, but what should they do? In fact, the youkai shouldn't have survived Tessaiga or Kagome's arrow! But no one was ready to give up, let alone withdraw.

Miroku, was about to call out to Kagome to tell Inuyasha which part of the Youkai's body the splinter was in so he could knock it off and Miroku could finally use his black hole. But it was not possible for him to shout anything, as the snake was getting faster and faster in its movements and he was now fully occupied with keeping it away from him.The fight went on for a long time, no one could really harm the youkai and everyone was busy keeping him at bay.

What no one had noticed at the time was that a figure, apart from the fight, was watching the action. At some point the hustle and bustle was too much for the figure and went in the direction of the fighting.

One heard a loud “STOP, WHAT'S THE LUBRICATION THEATER HERE?” Startled everyone looked at the speaker, but one could not see who or what it was. It was dressed in black from head to toe and also wore a black mask. However, no one could take a closer look, because shortly afterwards the youkai attacked again. This time the attack was not aimed at Inuyasha, Miroku or Sango, but this attack was aimed at the black figure and with a force that frightened even Sango.

It gave the impression that the demon had only played with them until now and was now using his real powers. To an outsider, there was something unreal about the fight, just as Kagome knew it from television, from her time. But in contrast to her friends, this figure, (or rather this shadow, because that's how Kagome felt this being) seemed to withstand the attacks of the youkai with ease.

It didn't take long before the shadow shouted: "NOW I HAVE PAINTED THE MUTE, I DON'T WANT TO PLAY WITH YOU ANYMORE, DO YOU ALWAYS WAIT THAT?" You could see the shadow standing quietly, a hand in front of you held and then began to glow in a light purple. With one movement, with that very hand, it lit up brightly and the youkai fell into many small pieces.

Now Inuyasha wanted to get involved again so that even if they hadn't won the fight, they would at least get the jewel shard. "Keh, now we are ..." He got no further because the figure had already disappeared into the nearby forest.

"Funny, this creature defeated the demon with ease and didn't even want the jewel splinter," Sango said. Inuyasha said dryly "That's a good thing, this figure probably knew who we were and didn't want to mess with us.While we're at it, Kagome is finally getting the splinter! "She did as she ordered and after a short grip put it in one of the meat chunks with the others in the chain around her neck.

She beamed enthusiastically at Inuyasha, "We have almost the entire jewel back together, there are maybe 3 or 4 pieces that are missing!" obviously expecting him to be as happy about it as she was, but he turned away abruptly when her wonderful laugh reawakened the familiar pain in his chest. Clenching his teeth tightly, he walked as indifferently as possible towards the little camp they had set up not far from the scene of the battle. Nobody should see that he was anything but enthusiastic about Kagome's announcement - on the contrary, it tore him apart. He knew that once they had gathered all the fragments of the jewel of the four souls, Kagome would return to their time and not return. He would never see her again. * Why should she? * he thought, * why should she stay with someone like me? *
"Come on, you still have to get your things from the warehouse and then we have to go to Kaede to get supplies!" he said in an emphatically sullen voice and only with a brief look back over his shoulder at his companions. He did not see how Kagome's happy expression fell sadly at his rejection.

Nobody wanted to go on that day, but they didn’t make any complaints, because you could hear in Inuyasha's voice that his mood was in the basement again and besides, it was not far to Kaede’s village anyway about 1 - 2 hours on foot. They packed their things and started walking.

Not much was said on the way to Kaede, because everyone except Shippo (who had followed the instructions to stay out of the fight) were very tired. Perhaps because of the tiredness, or because they had been further away from the village than they thought, they only got there when it was already night.Visibly relieved that they didn't have to fight any more that day, their steps became faster again when they saw the first outlines of the village. They went straight to Kaede's hut. Since there was no light to be seen there and Kagome said "Maybe she's already sleeping", they knocked carefully on Kaede's door.

This opened a small crack and you could see the wise face of the old Kaede. Without opening the door any further, she came out. "It's nice that you are back unharmed! What can I do for you?" said Kaede and closed the door. A slight perplexity arose in the group. They had always slept with her when they were here and Kaede knew that too.

"We wanted to stay with you," Kagome said carefully. "I'm sorry, but I haven't expected you guys tonight and I have a little girl with me who has a contagious flu." Kaede uttered a little startled and after a moment's thought.Even if a little incredulous, Kagome, Sango, Miroku and Shippo made their way to the village to make their night camp. Inuyasha had stayed on his Goshinboku tree before the others went into the village. He hated it because he had to spend the night that way without the beautiful / wonderful / intoxicating / sweet / loved / heartwarming / perfect / lovely smell of Kagome, but he didn't want it to be noticed how much he was Kagome is looking for closeness.

In the meantime, close to the sacred tree, the small group's night camp was set up and everyone started to crawl into their sleeping bags and sleep. Inuyasha, who had observed all this from his place up in the branches, elicited a small smile because this lovely scent of Kagome he would have with him tonight too.

sequel follows!
