"LittleSpring"
"Beep, beep, beep, ...", the sounds of the alarm clock rudely pulled Ann out of her dreams. She looked at the digital display. 8. 3 p.m. High time to get up, unless she wanted to be late on her first day at work. Ann got dressed, yawning, and her thoughts were already on her vacation job. She went quietly into the kitchen, her parents were still asleep, so she made breakfast as quietly as possible.
After a quick breakfast, she made her way to LittleSpring, a flower shop where she got a vacation job.The owner of "LittleSpring" drove to her sick aunt for 3 weeks today and Ann was allowed to take care of the shop. Ann was standing in front of the store after a 10-minute walk.
The shop door was open and Mrs. Smith, the shopkeeper, was busy moving some flowerpots outside. "Oh good morning Ann. Ready for your first day?" "I think so, Mrs. Smith," Ann replied with a smile. She liked the old lady with the mouse-gray hair. "Well, I'll give you the keys right away, but first I'll show you something.", Mrs. Smith took Ann by the arm and pulled her into the shop, which was full of all kinds of plants. She led Ann to the back of the shop, which almost resembled a jungle, and then stopped in front of a small flower. The flower was red and reminded Ann a little of a lily. She was standing on a separate table and it looked as if the other plants were arching away from her. "This is my newest plant.I bought them from a dealer last week. Unfortunately I still don't know what her name is, but I'll find out. "explained Mrs. Smith. Ann promised," I will take special care of her. "" I thought so. "said Mrs. Smith, leading Ann to the cash register. There she gave her the keys and warned Ann again to lock each evening."
When the old lady finally stood on the street and hugged Ann tightly to say goodbye, Ann could have sworn she could see a touch of sadness in Mrs. Smith's eyes for a brief moment. But the breath was gone before Ann could be sure that it was really there. "So Ann, we'll see you again in 3 weeks." Then she took her travel bag and made her way to the train station. Ann watched her until Mrs. Smith turned the next street corner.
Ann went humming back into the shop, grabbed a watering can, and began watering the plants. It was only 8 o'clock in the morning and hardly anyone was out that early. The place in which Ann lived was a well-known holiday resort, which was right on the Mediterranean. It was just summer vacation and the small town was full of tourists who spent most of the day on the beach or went hiking in the surrounding area. The place was mainly known for its beautiful sandy beach but also for its old city center with many small shops and cafes. Ann loved living here. She couldn't even imagine living in another city, because that was where she was at home.
After she had watered all the plants sufficiently, she started to rearrange the flowers in the shop window. As she was just about to properly drape a bouquet of roses, an old woman of around 70 with a white poodle entered the shop. She wore a beautiful light blue dress and it was hung with necklaces and bracelets everywhere. Ann almost believed that she was a living jewelry business, because it was really unnatural to wear so many necklaces at once.Ann smiled at the old lady and asked: "Can I help you or do you just want to have a look around first?" "I'm just looking around, but would you please be so nice and hold fluff while I look at the flowers?" Asked the woman. But it wasn't really a question, more like a kind of order that did not tolerate contradiction, but Ann didn't care. She didn't mind taking care of the dog as she was very fond of dogs.
Ann took the old woman off the leash and left the woman with the flowers alone. Ann leaned down to stroke the little poodle and noticed that the dog was wearing a collar that was studded with precious stones, Ann believed that it was definitely diamonds. She stared at the collar, wondering if the old woman was either just petting her poodle or she was a millionaire.
After a few minutes the old lady called Ann. She went to her with the poodle and the old woman took the leash off her. Then she said, "You have really beautiful flowers here.I need a couple of these, "she pointed to the purple lilies," and a bouquet of the yellow roses. " "Naturally. "Ann said with a smile.
She took the flowers and cut the flowers just as the old woman told her to. Then she wrapped the various bouquets in paper and typed the price into the till. After the old lady paid, Ann asked, “Shall I help you carry it?” The old woman looked at Ann in surprise and then smiled. It was the first smile that Ann had seen at her, she had almost thought that the old woman couldn't smile at all. "That would be very nice of you, but don't you have to take care of the shop?" "Oh no, there is so little going on anyway and I'm not gone that long. I can lock the shop as long as that."
"That's very nice of you.", The old woman thanked Ann as they were walking through the almost empty streets to the woman's house. Ann carried the two bouquets while the old lady only pulled her poodle Fluff with her on a leash. The house was even more grand than Ann had imagined. It was surrounded by a beautiful large garden and had a good view of the sea. The old lady led Ann through the house into the large kitchen and Ann placed the flowers in two large marble vases. After that the old woman invited Ann to have a cup of tea on the terrace. The old lady told Ann a little bit about her life that she had led up to now, she found out her name, Margarete Ludif. Ms. Ludif told of her youth in Ireland and her marriage to the French billionaire Pierre Ludif, who had died of terrible pneumonia just under 2 years ago. Ann learned that Mrs. Ludif was not sad about her husband's death as she had been forced to marry him at a young age and over time she had learned to hate him. She had a son and two daughters and 4 grandchildren. And yet she had been living here in total solitude for a year. She told Ann this with a sadness in her voice that brought tears to Ann's eyes. She felt sorry for the poor woman.
After a brief moment of silence Ann asked: "Who is actually taking care of your house, Mrs. Ludif? Because it's so big and you can't do all the work alone, can you?" "Well, I can take care of the housekeeping still take care of it myself, but a few times a week a few people come and look after everything. Until last week I also had an excellent gardener who checked the flowers every day, but unfortunately he and his family moved to London I have to look around for a new gardener before the garden becomes overgrown. ", replied Mrs. Ludif. "I could do that," Ann offered. "You?" Asked Mrs. Ludif in surprise and raised her eyebrows so that even more wrinkles appeared on her forehead. "Yes, the shop always closes at 4 and after that I could take care of the garden. So you don't need to bother looking for a new gardener here. ", said Ann." Hm ... that would be very practical, because it always makes so much work to find new workers. Okay. ", said Mrs. Ludif with a smile ready to take Ann as gardener." But first only for the summer holidays. I would also like to talk to your parents then. After all, they are the legal guardians and have to decide whether you can work for me or not. " "Yes of course. I'll write down the phone number for you. "Ann got a slip of paper and wrote down her parents' phone number.
Then she said goodbye to Mrs. Ludif to go back to the "LittleSpring".
The streets were a little busier now than they were an hour ago. In the city center there were many tourists who went to every shop to look around and buy souvenirs. Many of them were also photographed in front of the old fountain with the beautiful gargoyles.Ann had her hands full the morning, as many tourists came to the shop to look at the plants. Or the locals came to buy bouquets or plants for their garden. When it was finally noon and Ann took a break, she went to her favorite café down the street.
The café "The Morning Glory" was almost empty, except for an elderly couple who had lunch here. The owner of the café, Enrico, was an old friend of Ann, whom she had known for ages. He had been to school with her father and they met every Sunday to go hiking. Enrico was always very happy when Ann came to visit him in the café and often invited her to a huge sundae. So this time too.
Ann asked Enrico if he knew Mrs. Ludif, but he just said: "No, I have never heard of her. But she is probably so old that it is difficult for her to make new acquaintances. It is nice of you that you are with her want to help in the garden."While Ann was having her sundae, Enrico told her about his son, Marco, and that he had gone to his mother's place in Madrid for the rest of the summer vacation. Enrico and Marco's mother had been divorced for almost three years and Marco went to his mother's every summer vacation since then However, Marco Ann had once told him not to enjoy it very much. He only went there because his father said that every boy needs a mother and that he should not break off contact with her. Ann liked Marco, he was just as funny as his father and you could do anything with him. On the weekends she sometimes went with Marco to a small bay where the water was crystal clear, where they bathed most of the day.
When the church bell rang, Ann thanked the sundae and returned to the store. She spent the afternoon in the jungle of the "LittleSpring" and served the customers.
Shortly before 4 a.m. she started moving the flower pots
