Chapter: A difficult morning
"I'm getting old slowly," said the old man, wrapping his white beard around a thin finger. He barely giggled and looked at his three students. "It's time to appoint my successor. Of course it won't be any of the three of you. Discord would arise between you. I already have someone in view. However, this shouldn't make the same mistake as I did back then. That's why I instruct you to do so to take care of this person. Take this task seriously. I remember back then ... "The old man went into raptures again. "But it doesn't matter.", He said and waved the memories away with his thin hand. "I will send you the information. As you know, I am not very familiar with this pc." The man chuckled again. "You can go then."
The three went out of the old man's colorful garden. When they were out of earshot of the man, one of the girls said to one of the boys, "I thought he'd name you his successor. After all, you're the one from the ... well. "
"Maybe he did too much," said the other.
Warm rays of sunshine fell into the untidy room, which was still very quiet there because it was still morning. Clothes hung over a chair and the only space on the desk was just about enough that a notebook and a book had burst on it. The shelf was filled with books, a television, notebooks and slips of paper. There was a chest of drawers in the room with a bed next to it. Katharina slept in this bed. But not much longer to her suffering. She had long black hair that hung over her face and green eyes that were still closed. It was the first day after the summer vacation and Katharina had absolutely no desire to drag herself back to school. She was in the 9th grade, but did not know that this would be a little different than the eight before it. She had no idea that there would be three newcomers to class today and that her life would be completely upside down, although ... there wasn't that much to turn upside down. Her mother was a housewife and, now and then too much, looked after the house, husband and daughter with all her strength. It often happened that she drove Katharina into white heat with her care and mindfulness. Then it often happened to Katharina that there was a heated discussion, which unfortunately too often ended with TV bans.
Her father never had time for her because he worked a lot and was, in his words, "a pretty big beast". She saw him at breakfast in the morning, although she actually didn't really see him because he was mostly covered by a newspaper. He came home at 4 a.m. and went to play golf most of the time. She had no siblings, but that didn't really bother her either. What bothered them, however, was that nobody in the class really liked them and preferred to keep their distance. This also had the consequence that she mostly sat alone in the back.
Now it was unfortunately enough with the rest and also with the holidays, because her mother came into the room to wake her up.As always, she had her brown hair pinned up and did not look around her daughter's room very happily.
"Katharina, get up. You have to go to school."
"A few more hours," said Katharina. Once she was in bed, they couldn't get ten horses out of there. Unfortunately, however, her mother was apparently as strong as eleven horses.
The next thing Katharina could remember was standing in the bathroom brushing her teeth. She looked in the mirror and hated herself for getting her mother out of bed.
She washed, dressed and combed her hair, even if it didn't do much, because her hair just wasn't straight. It was like an eternal war, but cutting off was out of the question, either.
Katharina went downstairs to the bright kitchen, which was cleaned almost every day.
Bored, she sat down and began to eat her already soggy corn flakes. The only sound was the rustling of the newspaper her father was reading.Halfway through the bowl, Katharina stopped eating. "Good morning, father," she said.
Her father lowered the newspaper and said: "Huh?" With that he actually wanted to ask: "What are you doing here and who are you anyway?"
"1. Does that mean what please and 2. Good morning," said Katharina, amused.
"Good morning," said her father, still confused and expressionless. "How are you?" Katharina asked further.
"Good," said her father, stunned.
After another pause in which her father was still staring at her like she was an alien, she said, "Thanks, I'm fine too. Bye then," she said. 'How can a grown man be so stupid with such a well-paying job.'
So Katharina made her way to school.
