Change of mind

It was the middle of the night, but she only knew this because she couldn't feel the warm rays of the sun on her skin, nor could she hear the birds singing. Maybe she was wrong, after all, she didn't even know where she was ...
Maybe there were just no birds in this area and there was shadow over the place? She had never been outside her house or the garden before, as she had always been told that this was far too dangerous for her.
That she couldn't take care of herself ... That she would be lost forever alone outside ...
But now such a situation had arisen, she had no one to look after her, because she had become too much of a burden.
Reiko, that was her name, had been wandering for hours, as it seemed to her, through nowhere, stumbling over and over again over stones or roots, because they hadn't even given her her old wooden stick, with which she usually helped herself."You are useless", the last words her parents had spoken to her as a farewell echoed again and again in her ears.
She knew that for a long time, the realization had come so long ago, but it had hurt to have it confirmed by the people she loved more than anything.
Yes, it was useless ... worthless ... a handicap for anyone who had to take care of it ...
In some ways she could understand her parents' behavior, which was probably why she wasn't angry with them.
What to do with a useless cripple like you? She would never be able to be self-employed, she would never be able to help with all the work that had to be done on the farm, a man would never take her as a wife, because who would want to spend a lifetime on such a block tie?
It had been a difficult year for her family. The winter had been long, the harvest meager and her mother had also given birth to twins, which gave two more mouths to feed.It had been hard enough to feed six children, how could they manage with eight?
That was the reason Reiko had been brought here, far from everything she was familiar with, with the sure conviction that she would die here.
Had they not had the heart to just kill them, or did they simply not want to be guilty of murder, the black-haired girl wondered as she continued to walk aimlessly through the area.
Suddenly she heard a strange noise, which she could not assign, as she had never encountered anything similar on her family's farm. It was something rushing, gentle ... the same all the time ...
She continued walking in the direction from which she heard it, until suddenly ...

He stood there proud and above everything, watching the whole land that stretched below him. All of this was his, no other being was stupid enough to come here, not even the people who otherwise stop at nothing. But he had mercilessly destroyed everyone who had dared to do it a long time ago. He let them all burn in his scorching fire and since then none of them had tried to penetrate his living space.
But today seemed to be a special day, he realized, because for a long time he had been able to observe a person walking through the meadows and forests that he had long since declared his property.
Actually, he should have got rid of her long ago, but something about her irritated him. It seems young and feminine, but was that the reason for the strange behavior?
So far he had only seen males who had tried to injure him with sharp objects, but they were so weak that they could not have defeated even a small dragon ...
Then how could they have competed against him in the first place?
He watched with interest how this lower creature stumbled and fell again because it had not seen a stick. How clumsy could such a being be?
It kept going in the same direction, but still it didn't seem like it had any goal. Why was it here anyway?
Slowly it approached the river bank, so that the dragon assumed that it was planning to rest there ...
It was a nice place and also practical as the river was deep but there was almost no current in it.
But suddenly it slipped and landed in the cold water. Panicked, it waved its arms, tried its hand at the surface of the water, but it clearly had problems with it.
If tall people didn't teach their pupils how to behave in the water, the black scaly creature wondered.
It smoothly spread its large black wings so that a huge shadow fell on the land below.
He left the rock, which he had used as an observation place due to the enormous height, and flew with a few flaps of his wing down to the river bank. His only reaction to the girl's attempts to survive was that he watched her and cocked his head in interest.
Suddenly this wriggling thing in the water opened its eyes and ... looked right past him.
That was strange .. Shouldn't it be scared? But it seemed as if she didn't even notice him, even though he was so close.
His yellow eyes bored into hers and then he noticed ... nothing. There was complete teaching, no emotion, not even fear, considering the fact that it was going to drown.
Then the realization came over him: He could not see, this human child was blind.
But why was it all alone here? You looked after a blind youngster, you didn't leave it alone!
And why wasn't it crying out for help? It had to realize that it couldn't come out of the river on its own ...
For a while the dragon stared at the girl until she no longer had the strength to stay afloat and was dragged into the depths.Actually he wanted to leave it at that and just fly back to his rock, but the memory of those eyes stopped him ..
For no apparent reason he dipped one of his long wings into the water and pulled the girl out, now trembling with cold and fear.

Something closed tightly around her and pulled her out of the water. What was it? She had never felt anything like it in her life, but it was why and strong.
Reiko was ready the moment she realized that it was a river that had made this noise and that she had fallen into, closed with her life, but this something seemed to want to help her.
Was there anyone after all who was not completely indifferent to her?
She was lowered to the ground, carefully not to hurt herself further.
It was clear to her that it couldn't be a person who had saved her, because no one could muster such strength so easily. In addition, she felt the one powerful present tense, she got the feeling, even more than ever before, that she was just a small creature exposed to the will of another.
But none of this counted for the girl anymore, because she had been rescued, she had been cared for ...
Even if she couldn't see exactly where her savior was, she had reason and turned her head in that direction.
A smile lit up her face and the only thing she managed was a whispered "thank you" before she passed out from exhaustion.

This was the moment the dragon decided he would keep her with him ...
