Chapter: The trip
Tom came into the barn that evening.
"Hey Theo. The king has an assignment for me and won't allow me to travel around. But I think the assignment will bring us closer to this puzzle anyway."
"What is it all about?"
"A man has been sighted in the north who is said to be a wizard. You must know that the use of magic is forbidden in the kingdom. We should find him and confront him as the local police force is quite weak and has our hands full."
"Oh. And what does that have to do with our riddle?"
"The wizard should be able to influence dimensions. Maybe he can bring us home."
"Well, yes. It would be worth a try."
"Exactly, that's what I thought. We'll be leaving first thing in the morning."
Tom was up earlier than me the next morning. He had packed his things and was standing in the courtyard, waiting for me. Since I didn't have any things, I didn't have to pack anything. So I immediately went out to see Tom.
"Good morning, Tom," I yawned.
"Good morning, Theo.", Tom said in a good mood, "Can we start?"
"Yeah sure why not."
The servants came quickly and wished the prince a safe journey. Then I let him get on my back.
"Can we go, my prince?"
"Yep, I'm ready."
I spread my wings and took off into the cold morning air. Again I saw the lock from above. I turned north.
"How far do we have to go north?"
"To a town called Thyr. I guess it will take us several days to travel. It would take a week with a fast horse alone."
"We don't need that long. I fly as the crow flies and I'm faster."
Towards evening I started to land near a lonely inn. It was in the middle of the forest where two streets crossed. The lights were on inside.
"This inn is okay with you?"
"And what about you? Where do you want to sleep?"
"Oh, I can find a place in the forest.""I'd rather stay with you, Theo."
"Oh, it's just now. I won't go away."
"Then at least let me ask people if you can sleep there in the barn."
"How you mean."
Tom knocked on the door of the inn. An old woman opened the door.
"Oh, the prince. What brings you to me?"
"I just need a chance to stay the night. And my dragon here, can it sleep in your barn?"
The old woman looked at me.
"You know, my prince, there is hay and grain in the barn, and the dragon will just set everything on fire for me."
"I promise the dragon will not harm you."
The old woman looked unhappy. But she had to give in to one of the prince's wishes.
"Okay."
She went over to the barn and opened the barn door, and I trudged inside. The gate closed behind me. It was dark, but I could still see enough to find a suitable place to sleep. I settled for an empty patch of ground, being careful not to lie on the hay or the grain. Why did an old landlady need a barn with grain and hay in the middle of the forest?
Tom came into the barn the next day and brought me a large piece of meat. I accepted it gratefully.
"Hmm, you know how to treat your mount."
"Oh, come on. I don't see you as my mount, not anymore. You are my best friend."
"I was just kidding."
"Okay. When you're ready, can we go?"
"Sure, my prince."
He shook his head and went outside. I followed him.
The trees were still damp from the morning dew, and the birds had already started singing their song. The sun had started drying the treetops. A lovely morning.
"Where do you want to go today?" I asked.
"We are in good time. That means, the day after tomorrow we could already be in Thyr. I did not think that you would be that fast."
"I can also go faster. But then you wouldn't be able to take it and you might even fall off.""Ok. So we're flying at the same pace as yesterday."
He climbed onto my back again and I took off, heading north again, the sun on my right.
