He still suspected nothing bad. He sat by the window and watched the people who were still out and about in the last light of the day, while he had a helping of instant noodles for himself. He seemed perfectly satisfied with himself and the world. A busy day was behind him, as was a difficult mission. But he didn't need to think about that now. He was now off work and he was enjoying it to the full.
A big grin crossed his face when he saw two gray-clad figures rushing past in the street below. The Hokage errand boys, he knew. Really not to be envied.
He raised the chopsticks and another batch of noodles disappeared into his mouth. So carefree. If he had known what awaited him that evening, he would certainly not have been, but would have taken his legs in hand and looked for a distant, as small as possible hole to crawl into. But Naruto Uzumaki didn't know. Not yet.

It had started so harmlessly. It had been about three weeks earlier ...

[i]The day actually began like any other day intended to begin. Naruto slept for a long time and therefore had to hurry with breakfast in order to get to the meeting point that he had arranged with his teammates in time. Like every other day when there were no missions for them, Team Seven trained.
Sakura was already there and was tapping impatiently with her fingertips on her arms crossed in front of her body when he landed next to her about ten minutes late.
"Morning, Sakura!", He greeted her effusively and grinned. At least he grinned until the moment his teammate started to lecture. However, the blonde chaotic was spared the full extent of her sermon that morning.Sai appeared between them with a smile on his face and suddenly banished all thoughts of other things. Sakura and Naruto looked at each other speechlessly, then their gaze wandered back in sync to the smiling boy in front of them.

The sun had disappeared behind the horizon and Naruto left the viewing area in front of his window. He brought the now empty bowl of noodles over to the small kitchen and placed it next to the sink, where the plates from breakfast and lunch were already piled up. Maybe he would take care of it in a moment. Or not. Then tomorrow it would still not be too late for that.
He fetched an opened bag of milk from the refrigerator. It was his last. So he would have to go shopping tomorrow too. Maybe Sakura would let herself get him a few things? Sometimes she did when Naruto caught her in a good mood.On the other hand, if he caught her in a less good mood ... well, everyone made mistakes.
Whistling happily, he returned to the living room and drained the rest of the milk. The empty packaging landed on top of a pile of laundry that blocked two-thirds of his sofa. There was still plenty of time tomorrow to clean that up.
Naruto went on and turned on his radio. He didn't turn the volume up particularly high. The song that was playing wasn't very good. Something about snow and children playing with terrible bells in the background. He was just stretching out his hand to turn the volume down a little bit, when his gaze suddenly fell on a small, red object next to the radio. He paused in the middle of the movement.

[i]Sai beamed at his teammates. As many times as they'd seen his fake smile, this time they almost bought it.But that wasn't what was really crazy about this scene. Sai's short black haircut was adorned with a strange, pointed, red cap with a white plush border and a bobble on the tip, and in the hands that he had held out to them, he held two small figures, which in addition to a similar cap as Sai also had another Wore matching red coat, red trousers, boots, a potato sack and a white beard.
When neither of them responded, Sai gave Sakura and Naruto each one of the little men in hand. "For you. On St. Nicholas Day."
"To ... WHAT?" Naruto stared at the red thing in his hand like it was a bomb. Sakura didn't look much happier either. She weighed the red man in her hand. Naruto had also noticed that it was relatively light.
"A holiday in honor of St. Nicholas. I read about it in a book," said Sai with an openness that is unique to him and can be called naive. Then he pointed to the little presents he had given Naruto and Sakura. "Don't worry. It's just chocolate."

_____________________Flashback end_______________________________

Instead of turning the radio down as planned, Naruto changed his mind and reached for the chocolate Santa Claus on the shelf. He couldn't quite say why. Just as he couldn't say why he'd kept Sai's gift until now; his very first thought about the thing had been to toss it in the nearest trash.
As on the training ground this morning, Naruto lost himself in contemplation of the red chocolate man. It was a miracle that the little guy looked as harmless as a newborn lamb despite this aggressive shade of red. His face also spoke for it. He had slightly reddened, somewhat fluffed cheeks, small dimples on his chin, a straight nose, eyes beaming with good-naturedness and a sympathetic smile on his face.Every time he looked at him, Naruto felt kind of ... strange. There was no other way to describe it. And without noticing anything of it himself, little Santa Claus conjured such a smile on Naruto's face with his smile.
He carefully removed the packaging from the chocolate. It tore in a few places - it really couldn't be avoided - but for the most part the image of the red man remained intact. Naruto put it where the Chocolate Santa Claus had just been standing and smoothed out the wrinkled paper with one hand. His other hand brought the chocolate up to his mouth, where seconds later Santa's head disappeared.

And while he was still chewing with relish, melting the delicate milk chocolate on his tongue and sending small waves of happiness through his body, Naruto suddenly remembered another event that had happened just a few days later ...

_____________________ Flashback____________________________________[i]That day, Team Seven had a mission. The Hokage was expecting a visit from Hoshi, some ambassador with whom there were a few matters of political interest to discuss. The envoy would bring his own escort to the border of the fire kingdom, after which Naruto, Sakura and Sai would take over this task.
They had started very early, before sunrise, and by now they had almost reached the border. Because they were so punctual, they slowed down a little and were content with using a normal footpath instead of taking a path over the branches of the trees as usual.
Naruto and Sakura walked next to each other and talked about all kinds of things, but Sai had been extremely calm the whole morning and always kept a few steps behind his teammates. Until Sakura noticed it at some point. When she called him, Sai lifted his head and looked at her. As always, his face showed no emotion. It didn't even show a questioning expression."What do you think about all the time?" She asked him kindly and smiled. Naruto looked sideways at her in surprise. He himself would not have recognized that there was apparently a question that preoccupied the pale boy.
“It's about something I read.” Sakura looked at Naruto and they both laughed nervously. They both remembered very well what a surprise they had expected the last time after Sai had read something.
"Um, yes ... and what exactly is it that is on your mind now?", Sakura asked further.
He let a moment pass before answering. His teammates looked at him, visibly tense and a little worried. "What is Christmas?"

_____________________Flashback end_______________________________

Naruto swallowed the last of the chocolate and looked over at the calendar hanging on the wall next to the kitchen door. Twenty-three days of that month had already been crossed out with a red ballpoint pen. That's right, today was the twenty-fourth day of December.
Naruto quickly went to the window. The queasy feeling that he suddenly felt rising in his chest did not let up when he looked down at the street and everything was very calm there. He stroked his face and checked again, but the picture hadn't changed. Everything was as it always was down there. It was now almost completely dark on the streets and only a few people were still on the way.
Exactly, a single figure was just walking out of the street on the left, running past his block and would be out of sight again on the right--
What was that? The figure suddenly stopped directly under Naruto's window and looked up. The blonde wasn't entirely sure, but for a moment he was quite sure that he had recognized black eyes and black hair in the gloomy twilight.
And then suddenly the person was gone. However, it did not disappear from his field of vision on the right as expected, but below. The person came towards the house.

[i]"Christmas?"
Sai nodded with a smile - or whatever came closest to a smile with him. Naruto still couldn't get used to the sight. Sakura, on the other hand, just ignored it. She had put a finger to her chin and was apparently thinking.
"Christmas is a special holiday for Christians," she finally declared after walking in silence for a while. "It is a day in December, the twenty-fourth, I believe. On this day they celebrate the birth of their Son of God. It is a festival of hope and charity. Families and friends come together and celebrate. There is food, songs are sung and you." gives each other presents. There was also something about candles and a fir tree, but I don't remember that
