Shadow Play

sky darkened again, but I wasn't that foolish to get closer, instead I took a few steps back while the alley made faint noises of battle.
Suddenly I bumped my back against someone, the startled scream I uttered was choked off by a strong hand that came to rest on my mouth. Definitely not Michaels - I recognized her by now.
I tried to hit the man who was holding me, but the only thing I was trying to do was make him hold me tighter. He dragged me away from Michael and the others and finally out of the village.
When we were out of earshot of the village he took his hand from my mouth and threw himself over my shoulder, I screamed and fidgeted but he held me firmly.
My heart was racing, and not just out of fear for myself. What about Michael?
Was he still alive or had these people killed him? I prayed that he was still alive and that I would survive tonight too.

Without warning, the man suddenly let go of me, and I fell to the ground, taken aback.
The sky had cleared again so I could see his face.
It was the same man who had been sitting with me in the tavern a few hours earlier, but he looked different.
His face had taken on predatory features and when he roughly grabbed my wrist and pulled me to my feet, almost claw-like fingernails cut into my wrist.
I was trembling all over, I had to force myself to breathe reasonably calmly, the last thing I could use now was to pass out from shock or fear or both.
I managed to tear myself away with one jerk.
The man didn't seem to mind, he just laughed and whispered "Run!" which sounded more like a growl than a human voice.
I wasn't told that twice.
Even though I didn't hear the man following me, I dared not stop. I stumbled blindly along the path because the sky had darkened again so that I could hardly see where I was going.
My heart was in my throat and soon my lungs were burning like they were about to burst. All of a sudden a figure stood in front of me, and I almost ran into the werewolf, which stood up threateningly in front of me.
I wasn't sure, but I suspected it was the man.
A low growl came from his throat and I gathered my last strength and ran back towards the village. Just behind me, I heard the werewolf's claws dig into the ground, and I already suspected that he was only playing with me. Had he really tried to get me, he would have done it with ease.
Still, I clung to the hope of getting into the village and looking for shelter there somewhere - and maybe ... maybe Michael was still alive and would help me if I could hold out long enough.
Suddenly I stumbled and fell, I turned back to my pursuer, who was only a few feet away from me.
His raised lips seemed to me like a sneering grin. I tried to get up, but I was shaking all over and my legs would no longer support my weight.
Panicked, I crawled backwards. I sent a quick prayer to heaven and felt hot tears run down my cheeks. If only I hadn't run away from home!
When the werewolf lunged at me with a growl, I narrowed my eyes.
I didn't want the last thing I saw to be his mouth wide open in greed.
But there was no pain. Instead I heard a pained yowl and when I opened my eyes again I saw a black wolf lying on the ground right in front of my feet, obviously jumping in between when the werewolf pounced on me.
He had placed one of his clawed paws on the chest of the wolf and pressed him to the ground while he struck his teeth into the side of the animal.
The wolf's painful yowl grew louder for a moment before subsiding to a low whimper.
I felt petrified, I didn't even blink while looking at the wolf lying on the ground. He didn't look like a normal wolf, his eyes looked so ... human.
And a normal wolf wouldn't have thrown itself in front of me when the werewolf attacked me.
Suddenly the werewolf jerked its head back and the wolf howled again.
I choked when I realized that the werewolf had torn a piece of meat from the wolf's side.
This wolf was going to die, I was suddenly sure of that.
It was this thought that tore me from my stupor. What would this sacrifice have done if I just let myself be torn to pieces now? I shuddered when the werewolf put his head back and let out a horrific howl, but I finally managed to get up and run towards the village again. After a few steps I suddenly saw a dark figure standing a little way away, and after a few more seconds I recognized Nox.
I felt tears welling up in my eyes as I ran to the black stallion and, with some effort, pulled myself onto his back.
That he was here only confirmed my worst guesses.
For a second I thought about where to go.
Michael had said if there were any problems I should go to the next village, but in this village I would find safety more quickly. I glanced at the werewolf, who was watching me with his piercing yellow eyes.
The wolf below him stirred, and a second later he sped forward, but the werewolf noticed the movement in time and turned a little so that the wolf only caught him on the shoulder and not in the throat - but at least it distracted him further from me.
I had to make a decision, and quickly.
I poked my heels in Nox's side and turned the reins around. Nox galloped up from a standing start, ran in an arc around the werewolf and the other wolf - Michael, as I was now sure - around and then on as quickly as if a horde of demons were following us.
Which somehow was almost true.
I leaned low over Nox's neck and drove him away from the village as fast as he could, but apparently he wasn't fast enough, because after a brief moment the werewolf suddenly stood in front of us.Nox jerked his head around and tried to escape to the side, but in the process I flew straight over his neck and landed on the ground in front of the werewolf.

Before my head hit the ground and I passed out, I just heard someone pulling a sword behind me and the deep, horrifying growl that the werewolf uttered.
My last thought, however, was about Michael and the agonizing death he was about to face on my account - hadn't he just said less than an hour ago that he was only here in the village because of me?
