Prologue: The end of the beginning
~ Hi no Kuni, 06/26, 03:45 ~
Her heart beat hard against her chest, her pulse raced through her body and she felt the blood rush in her head, but she was not allowed to stop. Not for a single second. And all she could do was flee. Flee through the gloomy, cold night as fast as she could, as fast as her legs could carry her. And hope she was quick enough.
She had to get out of here. Away from memories, away from the past hours, away from danger.
Her heart threatened to tear apart when she thought back over recent events. When she thought about how she'd been attacked. When she thought about what had been taken from her. But she had to hold onto these thoughts. She couldn't stop now, couldn't grieve now. She had to run as fast as she could or it would be too late.
The young woman kept glancing anxiously over her back to make sure that she was alone and that no one was following her. Again and again she gasped in shock when she heard a rustling or heard the noises of the animals. And again and again her heart almost stopped when she imagined she had seen a shadow that had human outlines.
Even now she gave a startled gasp when she glanced over her shoulder. It was dark and she could only vaguely see everything, but there in front, without a doubt! A human figure. She was being followed. She hadn't made it in time. She had to go faster, had to flee, had to run away. But it was too slow. She heard the stranger's quick steps, heard the clink of kunai clashing as the stranger pulled one out, and saw the menacing grin on his face.
Tears ran down her cheeks. She had no chance, she was too slow. Weakened from the fight, weakened from her feelings. It was over. She would die. And she would never see him again! Never again. She would never be able to tell him how she felt for him.
But she didn't give up yet. Her legs still carried her through the dense tangle of trees and bushes, she still had the strength to keep running and fighting.
But she felt the disaster approaching. Felt the danger rushing inexorably towards them. What should she do? The chance of escaping was minimal, tiny, smaller than the stars which, together with the moon, gave off warm light in the gloomy night and which were partially covered by the thick clouds.
And suddenly she saw it: right in front of her, the forest, it was thinning. She was so close and yet so far. She wouldn't make it, she knew that now. She knew that she was too slow, knew that she was losing speed more and more. She was so close, so incredibly close, and yet it was too late.
She stepped out into the clearing, left the forest behind, and ran towards the huge wall. But before she had even reached her, she felt a stabbing pain in her back, which spread rapidly and left her with a strange feeling that did not come from the pain.Blood ran down her chin and she slowly saw the earth getting closer and closer. She thought of him one last time and gave him one last smile that he would never see.
Then it hit it too.
