We all serenaded Be in the choir, which was clearly embarrassing to him. As soon as the crowd dispersed and the noise level in the room rose, Sei appeared behind me. "Come on, let's get out of here!" He whispered to me and I was grabbed by the arm. He pulled me behind him, down the hall and finally out of the property. We ran to the fence, there he turned around again, ran with me in tow around the next corner and stopped again. He peeked around the corner, then turned to me and grinned at me. "We did it, Yu! Now let's finally celebrate properly!"
I looked at him with a smile and nodded. We ran to Sei's uncle, Taki, who wasn't at his nephew's birthday party today because he hadn't been invited. Not because his brother and his wife didn't like him, no. It probably had a lot more to do with the fact that he was gay. He had discovered two years ago that he was attracted to the male sex and a year ago he had told Sei's family. They took it up very loosely, at least as long as no one else found out about it. Nobody in high society should ever get wind of it, because that would have thrown a bad light on the Kuros.
Sei and I got on really well with Taki and often spent the afternoons at his house. When we got to his place, he seemed to be waiting for us. He greeted Sei with a hug - suddenly my face flushed again when I thought of our hug from earlier - and congratulated him. Then he held out a bag for him, grinned and said, "But don't overdo it, guys! Have fun!" Then he disappeared back into his house.When I asked Sei what was in the bag, he too began to grin and said: "What do you think? Alcohol is part of a celebration and since we can't get any in the supermarket ..."
He didn't have to go on, I knew what he wanted to say. He planned it all! I started to lie down and strolled with him to our favorite spot by the river. We sat down on the meadow, made ourselves comfortable and toasted Sei's birthday again. We were already slightly tipsy when Sei suddenly looked at me seriously. "Yu? You always stay my best friend, don't you? No matter what happens, you will always stay with me, am I right?"
I grinned stupidly and replied: "Of course I'll stay with you. You're my best buddy. I have no idea what to do without you."
Suddenly there was silence between us. We looked deeply into each other's eyes - and then began to laugh uproariously!
"That was a little too cheesy even for you, Yu!" Laughed Sei. I poked him in the side and we were wrestling. When we ran out of breath, we stayed where we were: he was lying on my outstretched left arm, I had laid my head on his shoulder and he ran his left hand through my hair. Everything was fine as long as Be was my best friend. The future didn't scare me, provided he was by my side. Suddenly a shooting star appeared in the sky.
"Quick, make a wish, Yu," Sei whispered to me. That he still believed in stuff like that made me smile. Even so, a wish was already forming in my head.
"Come on, hurry up, otherwise she's gone! I've already wished for something, now it's your turn!", He finally urged me to tell the shooting star.
I looked at him once more as he sat next to me: with large, shining eyes and slightly reddened cheeks. You seldom saw him like that, but if we continued to be friends, I would certainly be able to see him like that more often.I quickly looked up at the sky again and watched the falling star. I knew exactly what I wanted for the future.
I wish that Be and I would be inseparable forever.
The next day we were mortal enemies.
