Today: in the year 775
Since Boo was destroyed, life on earth had returned to normal.
People went about their familiar pursuits.
For Bulma this included inventing new things, useful or not; for Vegeta it was training with and without his son.
Son Gohan was preparing for admission to an elite university. Chichi did the household chores as always, and Son Goku ... he used his newfound life for what he loved to do and what he was best at: training until he dropped.
Son Goten, who was on summer vacation at the time, was almost always involved, especially now that homework was not part of the agenda. But his son didn't always enjoy training as much as his father.
It was not always possible to flee to Trunks, there he was - if he was unlucky - from Vegeta to train with him - from bad to worse - because his program was really tough.
It had become a lot tougher and more dogged, and yet he was at least two steps behind his former archenemy.
Since their fight against Boo, Vegeta saw Son Goku in a completely different light. Nevertheless, competitive thinking dominated his everyday life, he wanted to get better. The two met at regular intervals to test their strengths and to sound out possible weaknesses of the opponent. So also on this day. Son Goten stayed at home this time and Son Goku had been waiting for Vegeta for half an hour.
Somehow he had a queasy feeling in the stomach area and that wasn't because of the lack of food. A premonition crept into him, he just didn't know yet whether it was good or bad. The past had taught him to take his premonitions seriously and not just dismiss them as pipe dreams.
Then finally he took in the familiar aura of Vegeta. As soon as he saw Son Goku, he went into an attacking pose to test his reflexes.
With resounding success, as he discovered shortly afterwards, because Son Goku decorated the landscape with his body. Vegeta watched the exit of the other person with a raised eyebrow, but was silent.
He waited until Son Goku got up and dusted himself off. Instead he went straight to the counterattack, now completely focused on the fight. But after just a few blows, his concentration waned again.
Vegeta had gotten into the fight so far that he could beat Son Goku without much effort.
But Vegeta quickly became suspicious, otherwise he never had such an easy game with Son Goku. He frowned after knocking him between the rocks again. He wiped the dust off his face and landed on a still undamaged rock. "Hey, Kakarott! Finally concentrate. Winning is no fun this way!" he called out into the valley without further ado.
Son Goku slowly straightened up and looked at Vegeta as if he was seeing him for the first time.
"Do I have something on my face?" asked Vegeta. "Hmm ... what?" Son Goku's distant look cleared again and this time he stared Vegeta straight in the eye.
"Well, as unfocused as you are, all of our opponents - including me - would have had an easy time with you", Vegeta began again and looked challengingly at Son Goku. "You don't understand that anyway", Son Goku muttered almost inaudibly. "Listen, Kakarott, I didn't fly so far to chat, but to be able to train with an equal opponent.
So now you would have the goodness to direct your thoughts on why we are here? "Growled Vegeta, who had understood the quiet words very well.
"Anyway, what exactly 'I don't understand' anyway '?" he continued. "You fly by here at least three times a day anyway, part of your program, I suppose," interjected Son Goku."So don't stand up and cry about the few meters!" "Who's crying around here?" Vegeta began her, now standard, teasing.
"Stop it, I just don't have the nerve today." "Well, can we finally start?" Vegeta's eyes narrowed and began to flash with restrained anger. "I'm here to fight and I finally want my damn fight!"
He got louder and louder and shot a ki-blast in Son Goku's direction. This simply knocked the energy attack aside, so that it ate its way across the forest. "Hmm, well, so your reflexes are still working."
Son Goku shook his head and tried to regain control of his senses.
He concentrated only a fraction of his energy and collected it in the palm of his hand. This little bit of energy couldn't do any significant damage, so he decided to fire the part in Vegeta's direction.
But he just grinned. "With this bead you want to sweep me from the sky? Honestly, Kakarott, do you want to insult me?"
But Vegeta only directed part of his attention to this small, in itself insignificant attack. The other part was due to Son Goku and his entire behavior since Vegeta's arrival. Suddenly Vegeta jerked his head in another direction.
"What the ..." he began his sentence. He turned around again, wanted to see where Son Goku was. But it remained, as if rooted to the spot, in the same place where it had been before the attack. A slight smile lay on Son Goku's face, because exactly at this moment the "energy ball" hit its target and seared Vegeta's hair tips. "Grr ..." Vegeta made.
Son Goku couldn't help but laugh a little. Vegeta didn't find this funny at all, but he turned his attention back to what he had felt. "If I didn't know better ..." Vegeta let the rest of the sentence hang in the air and turned back to Son Goku.He waited for a reaction, but was disappointed.
Son Goku still didn't move a millimeter and it didn't look like that would change either. "You know what's going on here, Kakarott, so speak up," Vegeta tried again. By his standards, he stayed relatively calm.
Again he turned in the other direction, but all attempts to track down what he believed he could feel a second time failed.
Son Goku didn't seem to have heard Vegeta at all, because he didn't respond to anything.
Not to the questions he was asked, or to the little energy attacks that Vegeta sent him as a warning and to wake him up, which each time whizzed past him by a hair's breadth.
Then, after what seemed like hours, it seemed as if Son Goku would finally wake up from his stupor. "So you felt it too," he said succinctly. "Yes, but I'm not sure if that might not be a new technique of yours," Vegeta replied after a short pause. He wasn't sure for a long time whether it wasn't just his imagination.
Son Goku gave a big smile. "You give me a brilliant idea, Vegeta," he said. Vegeta flushed with anger. "First you mimick the mute and now you steal my ideas! Otherwise it's okay, won't you?" He almost screamed the last words.
"Come back on the carpet," growled Son Goku.
The smile on his face gave way to the serious expression from before. "We should break this off and postpone this today, Vegeta." "The way you are, this isn't fun anyway," Vegeta agreed. He had decided to find out what exactly it was that upset Son Goku. And Son Goku suspected that. He knew he had to get Vegeta ahead of him somehow, but that would be extremely difficult.
And to keep Vegeta from doing his own research, he'd have to let him in on his suspicions, and he didn't want to.He didn't want to let anyone into it, he wanted to solve the mystery on his own. Sooner or later he wouldn't get around it, but he still kept his knowledge to himself. In a way he was glad of this change, there was nothing else for the Sayans to do. But it was the other species that worried him. Something he didn't know whether it was threatening, would become, or not. However, Son Goku was aware that once Vegeta had tasted blood, he would not give up. He would find out what the younger Sayan was trying to keep from him. It was just a matter of time. So Son Goku had to be faster.
As if Vegeta had read his mind, he got ready for his flight home. "I'm leaving now, Kakarott. By the way, Bulma sends a message that you and your family should come over again, it was probably ages ago," said Vegeta. "Yes, thank you," Son Goku replied absently. Vegeta took off and zoomed towards the western capital at his usual breakneck pace.
