An eternity passed and it was always the same pattern: once a day they were brought something to eat, so they could have roughly counted the days if they had wanted it. But that didn't help them either. In addition, Cleo had long since lost the thread. Instead, they talked day after day. Cleo sang sometimes and Atemu had to admit that she had one of the sweetest voices he had ever heard. And he had heard a lot about it. At the parties of his father and other kings there were always truly great singers. Atemu learned that Cleo owed it to her father. He was human, she said. She spoke in the past, if she talked about him at all, and so Atemu concluded that her father was probably no longer alive. Her mother was a demon. She hadn't actually been allowed to get involved with Cleo's father and yet she had done it. That was how Cleo was born. She was neither human nor demon. She told him all this matter-of-factly. She didn't even speak of her feelings or tell him details about her life.He didn't ask about it either, because he had the feeling that she was already talking more than she usually did. Well, she was just bored.
But not only that. Atemu's voice calmed Cleo immensely and she had the feeling that she could trust him. It was strange, because until now Cleo had only found a few people to trust. Too often their trust had been taken advantage of. But Atemu… She hadn't even seen him and yet she felt drawn to him. In the meantime she had also learned a lot about him. He was the eldest of the royal family. He had two brothers and a sister, but they were only one and three. Even his little sister, whom he was very fond of, was only seven. Atemu had two best friends. He had grown up with both of them. Mana and Mahado. The Crown Prince had told Cleo some funny things they had once experienced together when they were little. Atemu also told of his mother, who had died at the hands of mercenaries, but that he could hardly remember her. He still remembered a few bits of her death because he had been there. She had hidden it. Not much was left in his memory, however. Atemu had never spoken to anyone about his mother either. It had seemed wrong to him. It was like revealing a weakness. With Cleo, he had the feeling that she listened to him and understood him. Her opinion did not offend him, no matter how much she criticized him, but gave him something to think about. Sometimes she used a language foreign to Atemu. When he asked her about it, she told him it was the language of demons.
Out of boredom, too, she began to teach him a few words:
"(: - =) (#:%) (*[° & {) (² & =%) (^ ° ²) ($ = * | * §²) (@ §%) (* ° ?! $[° %) "
"You learn fast," my Cleo grinning.
"Thank you for the flowers, but for a Crown Prince something like that is a matter of course", Atemu replied in a mock snooty tone."Oh and…"
Cleo couldn't get any further when suddenly the door opened and the food was brought. The man who brought it silently placed the plate in front of the bars and left again.
"Fish", Atemu was almost happy.
Even if what he was facing was hard to identify as a fish. Cleo picked up the fish with two fingers and studied it.
"Is he still alive?" She asked disgusted. Atemu laughed.
"Certainly not"
"That's really disgusting," complained Cleo.
"And I thought I was the spoiled brat of both of us", Atemu said and immediately spat something out.
"But these bones are disgusting!"
Cleo, who hadn't touched any of her food, suddenly jumped up.
"That's it!" She exclaimed happily.
"What is what?", Atemu asked confused.
"The bones! They are our means of escape!"
"Huh? Are you completely out of your mind? Honestly, the fish is not doing you any good"
"No, I'm serious! Atemu, you have to keep the bones and give them to me"
"I don't understand why, but good"
Now Cleo started to eat too. When she was done, Atemu gave her his bones through the bars.
"What are you going to do now?", Atemu wanted to know, while Cleo sat in front of the bones and, as it were, evaluated them.
"I'll pick the lock," she explained after choosing the two sturdiest bones.
"With the fish?"
"With the spine of the fish!"
"I'll have my food back up in a moment"
"Shit!" Said Cleo.
"What happened?", Atemu asked, who couldn't see her.
"The bone has broken through"
"It is also a difficult task to get a lock with the bones of our lunch," said Atemu.
But Cleo didn't give up. She kept trying. If a bone broke, it took the next until ...
"Done!"
"Really? You're out there? Cleo?"
She did not answer. Then Atemu heard the man coming down who had brought them the food.He immediately saw that something was wrong.
"Where is the little one?" He asked in a threatening voice.
Atemu only saw two hands going around the man's head from behind, gripping tight and within a few seconds Cleo had broken his neck. She took the keys and went to Atemu's cell. Now the two saw each other for the first time. So far they had only heard each other's voices.
Atemu couldn't believe it. In front of him stood a girl, a little shorter than him, and looked up at him with poisonous green eyes. She had blonde, almost white hair that reached her waist. However, she was filthy everywhere and her hair was matted. But she couldn't have looked more beautiful to him at the moment.
Cleo sank into the magenta eyes that looked at her. She had to admit that her idea of him differed greatly from reality. His hair stood in all directions and was three different colors. But you could see that they were naturally like that. It took her a moment to turn away from him and unlock the lock.
"Come on!" She asked and pulled him with her.
They ran up the stairs. They heard people talking in one direction, so Cleo Atemu gestured with a finger to go the other way. After wandering around, they found the exit. They had almost been spotted more than once. Atemu and Cleo found their way to the stable. They only stopped there when they had hidden between the horses.
"Listen, you're saddling two horses, okay? I'll get provisions. Without something to eat and drink, we don't even have to try!" Ordered Cleo.
Atemu nodded and got to work. Cleo ran back. She had discovered a kitchen in passing. She was lucky there was no one there. She quickly packed the essentials in a sack. She was just about to leave the door when suddenly another man was standing in front of her."You?" He asked aghast.
Cleo kicked him with full force where it always hurts in men and hurried to get to Atemu. First the man fell to his knees, howling. Then he roared:
"The prisoners escaped! Get them!"
Cleo had meanwhile reached Atemu.
"We should get out of here!" Cleo gasped.
"How so?"
At that moment the other men stormed out of the house.
"Okay, forget it!", Atemu said still swung himself on the horse and rode away with Cleo in no time at all. They noticed that the house in which they had been held was in the middle of the desert. Now they were in a bad situation: the sand in front of them, behind them the pack of angry horsemen.
"Atemu," Cleo called.
"Ride this way!"
She pointed in one direction with her finger.
"Stay in this direction and you will find an oasis"
"I'm not going without you!" Atemu contradicted.
"We'll meet there! Now hurry up!"
"Do you promise?"
"Yes!"
Cleo nodded to him. Atemu hesitated for a moment, but then he turned and rode in the direction Cleo had pointed him. Cleo's plan worked. Nobody noticed that either horse was gone. They all rode after Cleo. When she thought she was far enough away from Atemu, she stopped her horse, dismounted and faced the men. They laughed when they saw Cleo.
"Just wait! You're going to stop laughing!"
In the evening Atemu had arrived at the oasis. He felt guilty. He started collecting firewood and then went swimming in the lake of the oasis.
"Are you okay?" Asked a familiar voice suddenly.
"Cleo!"
"I told you I would follow you. What is it?"
"What about you?"
Cleo looked down at herself. There was blood all over her face, not just there.
"Nothing," she answered his question, took off her clothes and stepped into the lake with him.
There she first went into hiding and tried to get the blood away. But it was more difficult than she thought.
