“Let's get to the next patient.” I hear the voice of the doctor in charge even before he opens my door.
I pull on the monitor that monitors my heart and lung function 24 hours a day. He rolls towards me, I'm glad I don't need a lot of strength for this, because otherwise I wouldn't be able to do it so easily. I pull the plug that supplies the electrodes that stick to my body with power. Automatically a "Piiiiiiiiip" sounds. And I pretend to be dead. To play dead, I don't even know what it really feels like.
The door is thrown open and I hear the panicked voice of the ward doctor ordering the interns to turn on the defibrillator. I hear someone laughing.
I already know who it is, it's the one I discussed this with.
I open my eyes and shout loudly "I'm alive!" The assistants who are about to put the defibrillator on my body get a shock and I get angry looks, just like the one who laughed.
"I think Mr. Uchiha is going to call it a day. And Ichigo, I'm ... amazing."
He stomps out of the room angrily, followed by the assistants.
Only one of them stays and looks at me with a big smile on his face.
"You were right, I really end work when I laugh."
A tired smile creeps onto my lips too. His name is Sasuke and he's the only one who doesn't want to talk into my death.
He stands next to me and plugs the electrodes back in, and a steady beep is heard immediately. “Can you go out with me?” I ask him after he has collapsed on a chair next to me, exhausted. “You only think of something like that when I'm already sitting.” I nod slightly and he swings out of the chair and fetches my wheelchair. So he unplugs the electrodes and plugs them into a small surveillance monitor that he can put in the pocket of the backrest when I'm in a wheelchair. Without this monotonous beeping with me, I don't even feel well anymore. I need it to fall asleep or at all to just vegetate to myself.
He pulls the covers off my body. I am wearing a nightgown. Not something that is tied together on a ribbon at the back, but a completely normal one. I insisted on that, I want to die with dignity and not with a bare bottom, as you often see in hospital series. If I were the main actress in one of these series I would survive, series like this always have a happy ending so that the viewer, before he knows that everything is going well, can always cry and then think "Hach how beautiful" and then think too really in real life it would be exactly like that.
Pah, I don't laugh. Death has been with me for most of my life, in the end my twin brother gave up the fight against him.Maybe that's why I'm not afraid to die, too. The hope to see him again. Or not? Is there life after death at all?
Sasuke's worried look is on my legs, which have gotten really thin in the past nine weeks.
He easily lifts me out of bed and puts me in the wheelchair.
He puts a thin blanket over my legs and then drives me to the small park that is right next to the hospital. Hospitals are always located at some kind of parks or these are artificially created. The park that is located at this hospital is artificially created. There are almost only the same trees here, no mixed forests as I've always liked.
I'm being told something all the time, but I don't pay attention until my friends fall.
"They were here yesterday, you slept through them. Everyone is really worried about you."
"That's how it is, what should you do? My friends are very dear to my heart ... but my heart ... is just breaking." I say and take a deep breath.
I look at the botany and Sasuke is silent.
I still know him from before, his parents are friends of my parents, and we went to school together. But we didn't really have much to do with each other.
It wasn't until I was 15 that we sometimes started doing something together, he was still 18. Now we have a lot of mutual friends, which is good, because I always get the latest gossip when it interests me.
Now I'm 20 and Sasuke already 24. He just finished his medical studies and has been working here in the hospital for 14 days. His brother is often here to visit me.
"Ichigo-chan." A voice can be heard from further away and catches my attention.
“Sasuke, is that Naruto?” He replies with a yes and that there are a few others too.
I see the blonde walking towards me, he comes to a stop right in front of me.
"We're lucky that you're awake." He lets out with a smile on his face.
I look at him briefly and then to the right to the side. There is a lavender bush there and a small ladybug is crawling along one of the elongated, purple flowers. Spring is coming.
"Man Sasuke, your white coat looks really good on you. You look super serious."
Worried looks are on me, on the one hand from Naruto and on the other hand from Sasuke.
I notice a woman's voice that speaks quite loudly and I look ahead.
It's Sakura and Sai, they seem to be arguing. I don't care why.
I give both of them a quick wave and dedicate myself to the lavender.
Suddenly nobody says anything anymore, which doesn't suit me either and so I ask Sasuke if he could push me into the penumbra, I would like to take a little nap.
He nods at this question and pushes me under a tree, through whose crown some sun is still falling. It looks so peaceful. Sasuke stands in front of me and pulls the blanket a little higher. He looks me in the eye and then brushes a few strands from my face, behind my ear. Then he sits down on a bench with the others.
I watch him sit down and then run a hand across his face, exhausted.
Probably because of the night shift he had recently.
I slowly close my eyes and fall asleep.
