Chapter 1

A long, dark tunnel ... stone walls ... it's cold ... too cold ...

Bathed in sweat, Jain Estly started up in her bed. //Not again! // she thought horrified. Her otherwise completely relaxed and beautiful face had been replaced by a mask of fear. She took a few deep breaths and then slumped back into bed. The blanket was damp. She was still sweating.
"It was just a dream!" she muttered to herself and closed her eyes again.
Vain. After this shock, she would probably not be able to go back to sleep anytime soon.

The next morning…

The time had finally come and you could finally tell that Mitori Katu was jumping wildly through all the rooms and beaming with the sun. Today they would move. A new place. New orders and ...
"Ne new school, new friends!"
Mitori was beside herself with joy and had been that all morning. She almost ran into Jain, who was just stumbling down the stairs.
"A wonderful good morning Ja-chan!" it came directly towards her.
It was too early in the morning for Jain to be irritated by something like that, because she hated the name Ja-chan. It sounded so childish.
"Tomorrow!" she mumbled and walked past Mitori, who quickly picked up her darlings and finally jumped through the house with them.
"It's a wonder the cats haven't puked yet!" Jain grumbled when she finally found her way to the kitchen and dropped onto a chair there.
"Right! But leave her alone! She's been like this all morning!" informed Yume Asatori, who was sitting across from Jain.
To Jain's right sat, behind a newspaper and with a cup of coffee in hand, Christina Hape.
"Hey Chris! What's so special to read?" asked Mitori, who had finally let go of her kittens and was now standing behind Christina.
"Hm ... nothing yet!" mumbled the addressed, while Mitori peered over her shoulder."Oh, when does it actually start?" Yume asked and took a sip of her cocoa.
"Tomorrow at nine o'clock in the morning!" Christina said coolly, but didn't look up from her newspaper.
"So early!" Mitori nagged and put on her doggy gaze, which enlarged the eyes to plates.
"Mitori no! The cars have already been ordered! Tomorrow! Nine o'clock! IN THE EARLY!" Christina hissed, who absolutely hated that look.
Offended, the little Chibi turned away and angrily stomped into the living room. Jain couldn't help smiling.
"What's that stupid grin?" Christina growled.
"Take it easy, Chris! What's going on?" Yume said and raised his arms soothingly.
Christina sighed heavily.
"I'm just a little overwhelmed. This whole relocation business. My nerves are on edge!" she moaned.
"It's only today and tonight anyway ... Then we're almost there!" said Jain.
"You are right!" Christina admitted and stood up.She put her cup down in silence and put the newspaper aside.
"The best thing to do is to start packing. I don't feel like having things lying around here tomorrow!"
With these words she left the kitchen and shared the whole thing with Mitori, who was still pouting on the sofa.
"She really seems to be at the end of her nerve!" Yume noticed and drank all of her cocoa.
Jain nodded wordlessly and began to eat breakfast.

Midday passed almost calmly and uneventfully, if Mitori hadn't kept trying to force everything into her tiny suitcase, which of course ended in a huge explosion of clothes. To spare Christina's nerves, Yume and Jain agreed to help Mitori with packing, as the two had already packed their suitcases.
"Mitori ..." Yume said, but her friend didn't listen to her, she packed way too much into the suitcase again.
"No!" she howled when the suitcase popped open again and spat out the amazed clothes inside."MITORI!" yelled Yume after her friend missed her words three more times.
"What?"
Mitori was desperate to see. Yume sighed deeply and then began to speak:
"You don't need to pack all your things in the suitcase, just what you want to wear tomorrow and the day after tomorrow! The rest will be stowed in the car!"
Mitori saw the light. She quickly packed a few things and lo and behold. The suitcase held.
"Thanks!" she sniffed and threw herself into Yume and Jain's arms.
"I didn't do anything!" Jain noticed, but Mitori skilfully ignored it again.

After all the suitcases were finally packed, the hardest part came. The furniture had to be stowed in the car provided in front of it. That was finally done about six hours later and so they left the empty house.
"Then where are we sleeping now?" Yume asked when she was standing in the front yard.
"In the car!" Christina sighed.
Mitori got into the car first, with her kitten in her arms of course, then Yume next to her.Christina got into the driver's seat and Jain took the passenger seat.
"Can't we call the furniture types? Then we'll arrive tomorrow!" said Mitori, who didn't feel like spending the night in the car.
"Could we!" Christina muttered and pulled out her cell phone.

About half an hour later, the fully loaded wagons started moving. The four women had had a lot of luck, because the movers had just not received an order and were able to drive off now.
The way was long. It went through huge cities, past rice fields and wide meadows. Beautiful, Jain thought. The moon and stars lit up the area somewhat. A peaceful, idyllic landscape that was repeatedly interrupted by cities and industry.

Yume, Mitori and the cats had long since disappeared in the back seat in the land of dreams, but Christina and Jain stayed stubbornly awake. Christina more because she had to. She would have liked to sleep, but she wasn't about to let Jain take the wheel because her driving style was anything but good.It was more like suicide to let Jain drive voluntarily. Only recently this had put Christina's beloved convertible in front of a tree. Christina sighed at the thought. That had cost her a fortune again.
"Tell me! Where are we actually going?" Jain asked for the seventh time.
"Greetings from short-term memory!" Christina said coolly "We're still going to Tokyo!"
From then on, Jain remained calm and just stared out the window the entire time.

After about an hour, Yume and Mitori were awake again, rather involuntarily. Because Jain had to insert one of her CDs and they were anything but sleep-inducing.
"Man, Jain. Turn it down!" Yume growled and rubbed his eyes wearily.
Jain didn't respond. Shaking her head, she laid two cats, who had made themselves comfortable on their legs, on the seat next to her, careful not to wake her up.
Christina, however, had heard Yume and turned the volume down a bit.Jain seemed to ignore that too. // What is so special about this landscape? // thought Yume himself.
Eventually she woke Mitori, who still seemed stubbornly asleep. She opened her eyes only after ten more wake-up minutes and yawned loudly.
"Mitori. Could you remove your cat from my head?" Jain said after a few minutes and pointed, bored, to her head, on which a small cat had curled up.
Smiling, Mitori took the kitten from her friend's head and hugged it first.
"Don't crush them!" said Yume and tried to save the cat.

Shaking his head, Jain turned her gaze back out of the window. The darkness swallowed every detail, and as hard as she tried, Jain didn't see much. It was like in her dream. Dark and it seemed cold.
Jain put her head against the cold pane and finally fell asleep.

Voices reached her ear. No. She wouldn't wake up just yet, but the voices were getting louder and louder.Wearily, Jain opened one eye and looked directly into Mitori's gentle face.
"Good Morning!" she whistled, grinning like a honey cake horse.
"Go away!" Jain growled and closed his eyes again.
"Come on wake up!" Christina's voice rang out clearly in her ear "We're here!"
Now Jain opened his eyes and looked out the car window.
If she had been sitting in a chair now, she would have tumbled backwards.

The car had been parked on the sidewalk. Jain stared out the window, precisely at a dark gray fence. Behind it there was a huge, well-tended front garden. A gravel path meandered through it and forked in front of the house. Once to the garage and once to the front door. The front door was made of oak and was incredibly large. The whole house was actually gigantic. It was in light brown to dark brown and the large, clean windows gave a clear view of the interior. The house had two floors and apparently an attic. The beginnings of a garden were also recognizable. The front yard was well-tended, but not yet well-stocked. There were only a few flowers to be found.

"Wow!" Jain marveled, and was amazed for the first time in her life.
"Chic right?" Christina said and grinned as if she would have liked to pat herself on the shoulder.
"I thought we wanted to be a little less conspicuous!" said Yume.
"Oh come on! Chris wanted to treat himself to something too!" Mitori laughed, grabbed her suitcase and hopped in a good mood towards the house.
Shaking their heads, Yume and Jain also took their suitcases and followed Mitori. Christina instructed the movers to simply put the furniture in the house, and then followed the others too.
From the inside the house was even bigger than it appeared from the outside. Cream-colored wallpaper adorned the corridor walls. The house still looked pretty empty, with no furniture whatsoever, but that was about to change. After all, there would soon be four very different women living here, and that could be cheerful. The first argument arose when they discussed what color the wallpaper for the living room should be.
"I want yellow!" Mitori whistled happily.
"But I prefer medium blue!" interjected Yume.
"I prefer orange!" said Christina.
"I stay out of it!" Jain said and turned away. "My room is already the color it should be and that's it!"
With that, Jain disappeared into her room.

As if by chance, the wallpaper was the right color. Jain would have had the
