Game of Life

his eyes.
Yuugi was back in his room, on his bed. There wasn't a purple ghost or glowing box there. But he knew it hadn't been a dream, he could feel the presence now, felt it close in the box. He just had to take it.

Yuugi rose slowly, the pain in his lungs back. He knew not to move, but he had to find it. He - needed - it ...

Yuugi cursed that he lived in the highest corner of the house. It felt like such a long walk and his breath came in gulps. He sat down to come down the stairs. Carefully he pushed his bottom down and made sure that he wouldn't fall. He had to save it ...

He recalled the image he had briefly seen when he tried to touch the box. A picture of darkness and cold, a young figure who was caught in chains that wrapped around his body, mocked him.His dark skin was cut open all over, his hair drooped limp and defeated, his body was naked and cruelly bared. Yuugi hadn't been able to speak when those eyes lifted faintly and stared into his as their eternal emptiness and madness were briefly replaced by a flickering spark of hope and wonder. He hadn't been able to see anymore, it was only a moment, but he knew that this man had been the presence, the one who had challenged him to live with his grandfather seven years ago.

And now Yuugi would help him.
He slowly climbed to his feet once he got to the bottom of the stairs, his breathing refusing to normalize, but Yuugi refusing to acknowledge it as well. His vision blurred, but he didn't care. His hand was on the door that led into the game store. He could faintly hear his grandfather talking to a customer and he smiled at the thought. His grandfather had helped him so much, maybe he would help him now.
It took Yuugi a few tries before he opened the door and half stumbled into the shop. The customer had already left and Sugoroku was alone, an expression of concern immediately on his features when he saw his grandson.
"Yuugi! What ...?" he paused as Yuugi clung to him as if he were a lifeline, his breathing irregular. He pointed to the storeroom, gave his grandfather a begging look.
Sugoroku knew to ignore the request. Yuugi had to be taken to the hospital and the storage room was full of dust, it would only make the situation worse. But...
The look on the boy's face was so sincere, as if it all depended on going there. Sugoroku sighed in defeat and slowly began to lead him there, vowing to take him straight to the hospital as soon as this was over.
He opened the door slightly and turned on the light, carefully helping Yuugi down the stairs. He looked at the boy worried, but Yuugi didn't look at him, he only had eyes for one of the back shelves where some old games were stored and forgotten. Sugoroku paused, confused, but Yuugi immediately let go of him and walked on alone, moving quickly to the back shelf, pushing the games apart, his breathing becoming more irregular, but he didn't seem to notice.
"Yuugi ..." Sugoroku didn't understand. Yuugi had never been so tense on the back shelves, but now he seemed so desperate to find something. "What are you looking for?"
Yuugi paused at these words, not sure how to answer. But then ... he knew what it was without even knowing how he knew the name of the artifact in which the presence was ...
"Mill ..." he gasped, coughing. "ennium ... puzz ... puzzle."
Sugoroku blinked in amazement. How did Yuugi even know about the puzzle? He had never mentioned it to him and after finding it and not being able to solve it, he had put it in the storage room. The stories that those who found it had died later upset him; he didn't want Yuugi to have it.
... And yet Yuugi somehow knew about it and he seemed so desperate for it. Could he really refuse him?
Perhaps Yuugi would solve it and get the power and knowledge that the box described. A pure soul like the Yuugis wouldn't be manipulated by it, would it? The darkness or the 'shadow games' the dying men were telling about wouldn't hurt him either, would it?
"You're welcome." Yuugi gasped, now sank to the ground defeated, sobs filled the small body. "It…"
-It saved me. - he thought, he wasn't able to say it out loud. He could barely breathe now, but did it still matter? If it wasn't here, he couldn't have it ...
He barely noticed that his grandfather was pulling him to his feet and moving a few more games on the shelf before he smiled at him.He took Yuugi's small hand and placed it on the golden, rectangular box, hoping that he had made the right decision.
As soon as Yuugi felt it under his fingers, his sobs stopped and his breathing calmed down. He looked at the dust-covered object with reddened eyes, but it was undeniably one that contained the puzzle.
He took it off the shelf and held it close to his chest, sighing in awe as he felt how it felt. Holding it, having it to himself, made him feel complete, as if he had found another part of himself that he had never realized was missing. He opened the lid, looked at the pieces with a determined smile that were inside. He wasn't exactly sure how they connected to the man, but he knew that would be resolved once he resolved it. And that is what he would do. That was his new game.
“I finally found you.” He smiled, and somewhere, deep in the darkness of the puzzle, the chains broke. After that day, his lungs did not torment him again, and his family were both relieved and suspicious of why. But it didn't really matter, he was finally healthy.

Sugoroku had told Yuugi the story of the puzzle, how those who found it had died, and warned him to be careful. But Yuugi couldn't be convinced to share it, he wasn't going to give up. Sugoroku could only watch him and hope that whatever the power of darkness the puzzle promised would not harm his grandson.

For years Yuugi would wonder about the purple ghost that had led him to the puzzle and he would only know that he would see him again when the game Magic and Wizards came out and his grandfather showed him his deck. The Black Magician would always be his favorite card because it was the being that made him complete. He would never forget that.-Something you see but have never seen before. - The riddle was something that was used to describe the puzzle in two ways, first because you would never see the puzzle in its entirety, and therefore you did not know what it really looked like as a whole. The other ... the other kept a secret, also from him, but he was still there anyway.
-Something you see but have never seen before. - He had seen the presence in the puzzle a long time ago, but he hadn't actually - seen - it. Maybe one day he would get the opportunity to see behind the chained illusion, maybe one day he would not think of the person that he was not real. Maybe one day he would - see - he would see his other half.
